OpEdNews Quicklink: Syrian opposition groups divided over Moscow peace talks

OpEdNews Quicklink: Syrian opposition groups divided over Moscow peace talks | Global politics | Scoop.it
A Syrian opposition group announced Saturday it will attend a proposed peace conference in Moscow later this month, further highlighting the splits between those opposing President Bashar Assad's government amid the country's grinding civil war. The fractured opposition's opposing decisions make it unclear whether anything will come of the Russian proposal to hold talks after Jan. 20. Assad's government had said it is prepared to participate. Russia is a staunch ally of Assad.

OpEdNews Article: Article: In Solidarity With a Free Press: Some More Blasphemous Cartoons | Global politics | Scoop.it
This week's defense of free speech rights was so spirited that it gave rise to a brand new principle: to defend free speech, one not only defends the right to disseminate the speech, but embraces the content of the speech itself. One should not merely condemn the attacks and defend the right of the cartoonists to publish, but should publish and even celebrate those cartoons.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

"Oh, God'!" Starring George Burns as God, Gelbart would have never thought his comedy would need Burns to address, satirically, thugs who disgustingly distort religion as a rationale to murder innocents. I know many satirists. I don't know any of them who would consider themselves innocent. In fact they would take that as an insult. But to become targets for assassination, at best, would be a source for even more satirization.

‘EU authorities can’t control all radical groups’

‘EU authorities can’t control all radical groups’ | Global politics | Scoop.it
Border control is not going to solve the problem of terrorist attacks because it’s impossible for military services to control all radicals including those who are EU citizens, Peter Kirkham, former chief of Metropolitan police, told RT.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The point that was mentioned about two brothers in France being not immigrants themselves but French citizens born of immigrant parents. That is an extremely worrying thing as well because border control is not going to solve that problem out for you. Those people if they are radicalized are within your country’s borders already. Thinking back to 7/7 [the 7 July 2005 London bombings] the two bombers in the UK were UK citizens of origins beyond Britain.

‘Soviets invading Germany, Ukraine:’ Berlin faces tough choice on PM Yatsenyuk’s WW2 take

‘Soviets invading Germany, Ukraine:’ Berlin faces tough choice on PM Yatsenyuk’s WW2 take | Global politics | Scoop.it
This week, Ukraine Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said the USSR had invaded Germany and Ukraine in WW2. Despite attempts by the Western press to bury the story, Russia is now demanding answers from Berlin.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

"Surely a senior politician wouldn’t say something like that?" 24 hours to realize the truth? Sure "Yats" has never been a "responsible" leader, but an Imperial Fascist and a warmonger. And a schizo, who doesn't care to deny history with his attempts to enlist his Western sponsors in his dangerous wargame against Russia. If the Soviets invaded, so did the Americans, only the latter hadn't been invaded. How could the Soviets invade themselves, when Ukraine was a Soviet land?!? Stalin made a huge historic mistake, he should have never annexed Galicia-Lvov to the Ukraine, he should have left it in Poland, and nowadays the Ukrainians would have been spared the pest of the Lvov Nazi pest.

Rupert Murdoch has been strongly criticised after tweeting that "most Moslems" -- even if peaceful -- must be held responsible for the religion's "growing jihadist cancer" in the wake of the terror attacks in France. The News Corp boss added his influential voice to the global discussion on terror that has convulsed social media since gunmen slaughtered 12 people at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on Wednesday.

As three suspects in the Charlie Hebdo massacre die in a shootout with French police, the cycle of violence that has engulfed the Mideast again reaches into the West, but the challenge is to learn from U.S. mistakes after 9/11 and address root causes, not react with another round of mindless violence, says ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern.

Clash of Christian & Muslim values: What’s behind the Charlie Hebdo tragedy?

Clash of Christian & Muslim values: What’s behind the Charlie Hebdo tragedy? | Global politics | Scoop.it
The underlying factor behind the Charlie Hebdo tragedy is a difference between Christian and Muslim cultures, David Young, UKIP's Poole parliamentary candidate, told RT. He views the massacre as an isolated incident unrepresentative of Islam as a whole.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

I think there is a rising climate of tension. And it has to do with the continuing Middle East conflict, it has to do with Western boots on the ground in Islamic territory. I hadn’t realized until I traveled to the Middle East on business myself a few years ago how offensive it is to many Muslims to have non-Muslim boots on the ground in their territory. We in the West don’t understand that generally.

The Charlie Hebdo attack: Geo-politics, eurocentrism, Islamophobia, and blowback

The Charlie Hebdo attack: Geo-politics, eurocentrism, Islamophobia, and blowback | Global politics | Scoop.it
The recent violent outrage in Paris that saw cartoonists and other innocents killed is but the latest example of the way in which Muslim extremists nowadays manage to occupy the airwaves and dominate the news broadcasts.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

It isn't exactly that all people coming from the MENA are called "Muslims" and stigmatized as such. The issue is on whose behalf or name they act. So Kurds, for example, are called Kurds, because they don't go around saying they are Muslims in the first place. I have my doubts that in the French-speaking countries migrants from North Africa and Eastern Mediterranean are branded as "Muslims". I think they are still called "Arabes", which is derogatory enough for the Frenc-speakers, as "Moro" in Spain (no longer acceptable for the educated)... On the other hand, Turks are still named Turks, for all Erdogan's islamization... I would venture that most of people still recognize migrants for their nation of origin (Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria...), and not their religion, at least when they know where they are from... Summing up, Muslims is used perhaps as a common denominator, and not always, and certainly when they turn terrorists, they are said "Islamists" or "Jihadists"...
