Palmyra Concert Shows Russia's Conviction and the Guts the West Lacks

Palmyra Concert Shows Russia's Conviction and the Guts the West Lacks | Global politics | Scoop.it
A camera pans round the half-full Roman amphitheatre in Palmyra. The audience, children among them, look on, unsmilingly, as men with guns patrol their allotted sections. And then the video cuts to the main event: a line of Syrian soldiers are on their knees facing out from the stage, while, behind them, a line of teenage gunmen wait to plant bullets in the back of the soldiers’ heads. The scene is set for the final act.

CNN Takes a Syria Tour With the Russian Military, Is Impressed | Global politics | Scoop.it
Last week the Russian military brought more than a hundred international journalists, including our CNN crew, to Palmyra. The trip was orchestrated to showcase Moscow's role in liberating the ancient heritage site but it also said a lot about the Russian army's capabilities and the scale of their assets in Syria.

Information Wars: Ukraine and the West vs. Russia and the Rest - Harvard International Review

Information Wars: Ukraine and the West vs. Russia and the Rest - Harvard International Review | Global politics | Scoop.it
In the media battle between the West and Russia over what really has been going on in Ukraine, round one went to Russia — at least among audiences in former Soviet Union republics. Throughout the Ukraine crisis in 2014, Gallup polls showed nearly all residents of Russia, and majorities of residents in most post-Soviet states, …
Enrique Ferro's insight:
However, in another blow to the Western media, residents in countries who used both Russian and Western media to get information about Ukraine and Crimea were also more likely to support Crimea’s choice than the national average. In fact, the more sources that residents used to get information about the situation, the more positive they were toward Crimea’s move. In this regard, Western media actually helped generate more positive views of the situation.

Toxic Entanglements: Big Oil’s Democratic Primary Favorite in California

Toxic Entanglements: Big Oil’s Democratic Primary Favorite in California | Global politics | Scoop.it
Residents of Richmond and other California refinery towns have learned, over time, to be wary of state and local officials too closely tied to companies like Chevron.

Politicians who benefit from “independent expenditures” on their behalf or direct campaign donations from oil producers or, their lobbying group, the Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA) tend to be less enthusiastic about protecting the environment by reducing fossil fuel dependence.

It’s Time for the Left to Abandon Liberalism Once and For All

It’s Time for the Left to Abandon Liberalism Once and For All | Global politics | Scoop.it
As the Democratic Party, now with two massive figureheads, Bernie Sanders, and Hillary Clinton, begins to fracture as the battle over what direction the party should move wages on, we are starting to see two very different camps use the same word: liberal.

This poses a problem as to what a liberal is, and this is addressed by Danny Katch in his book Socialism … Seriously, in which he points out that, “Millions of people find themselves classified as liberals by default, ranging from those who march against banks and bombs to those who bail out the former and drop the latter. That’s not a very useful category.” He points out that in today’s politics, a liberal is basically anyone who isn’t a Republican.

'Brazen': Rigged Democratic Primaries Alienate Sanders Supporters

With former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton the likely Democratic presidential nominee, cartoonist Ted Rall speaks with Radio Sputnik’s Loud & Clear to discuss the so-called “Bernie or Bust” movement, and those who refuse to support Clinton in the general election.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
According to a variety of polls, 1/3 of Sanders' voters will vote for Trump, and 1/5 will vote for somebody else or stay at home. Only half of his voters will go to Clinton. Whatever the political speculations, hatred against Clinton among Sanders' followers is stronger than Trump's rejection. If they didn't like her at the beginning of the campaign, now they assert "Never Hillary!" after all the tricks and foul play her campaign has indulged into. If she is imposed after all by the Democratic apparatus, she's doomed, and the party along with her.

With the battle for the hearts and minds of the Democratic Party entering the eleventh hour, the biggest question for non-Americans observing the election cycle is: 'What will candidate x do when it comes to policy toward my country?' In Hillary Clinton's case, the answer, for anyone outside the Western world, doesn't seem all that appealing.

How close is Isis to losing the war?

How close is Isis to losing the war? | Global politics | Scoop.it
In northern Syria carnage alternates with ceasefires as the Syrian air force pounds the rebel-held eastern side of Aleppo in a bid to drive out the remaining civilians. Rebel artillery replies in kind against government areas in the west of the city, but cannot match the firepower used against their enclave. Airstrikes on Thursday killed at least 28 people in a refugee camp close to the Turkish border.

Hillary Clinton vs Bernie Sanders: In-depth Report on Exit Polling and Election Fraud Allegations

What if early exit polling in the United States is actually quite reliable, except when it involves George W. Bush or Hillary Clinton?

Last night in West Virginia the first full exit poll projected a 19.3% Bernie Sanders win. The first full exit poll is released to CNN and others in the National Election Pool by Edison Research just as polls close for a given state. CNN posts the results within five or ten minutes of poll closing. With 96.8% reporting this morning, Sanders is up 15.4% in West Virginia for a 3.9% difference in Hillary Clinton’s favor. Not bad. In and of itself, this would cause no concern. It is definitely within the margin of error.

Thank You Barack Obama for Showing Us That Peace is War

Thank You Barack Obama for Showing Us That Peace is War | Global politics | Scoop.it
Decades ago George Orwell warned us that in 1984, war would be peace, truth would be lies, and love would be hate. Over the years, I’ve caught glimpses of what Orwell had in mind. But it is not until 2016 that I feel I can say his prognosis has come completely true. Thank you, Barack Obama, for that.

You have brought savoir-faire into the White House that none of your predecessors even came close to. Bill Clinton’s “I did not have sex with that woman,” Ronald Reagan’s “I can’t remember” funding the contras, and of course, nothing more needs to be said about both George Bushes, progeny of Hitler-affiliated and Congressionally-censored industrialists and financiers, whose presidencies made a mockery of democracy.

Author Q&A: Patrick Cockburn | Big Issue North | Global politics | Scoop.it
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Is Hillary Clinton likely to pursue an enlightened foreign policy with regard to jihadism? Not much sign of it. She was for invasion of Iraq in 2003, intervention in Libya in 2011 and Syria in 2013. These are very much the actions of the foreign policy establishment in Washington that hasn’t learned or forgotten anything for the last quarter century. - See more at: http://www.bigissuenorth.com/2016/04/author-qa-patrick-cockburn/18008?utm_source=OR+Books+Mailing+List&utm_campaign=f6346c1561-bigissuenorth&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_43ce1d59a2-f6346c1561-317089857&goal=0_43ce1d59a2-f6346c1561-317089857&mc_cid=f6346c1561&mc_eid=3caa019fcd#sthash.6RMzXp5k.dpuf
