Why Is There So Little Popular Protest Against Recent Threats of Nuclear War?

Why Is There So Little Popular Protest Against Recent Threats of Nuclear War? | Global politics | Scoop.it
The belief of Americans and Europeans that their countries are safe from a North Korean attack.  Yes, many people will die in a new Korean War, especially one fought with nuclear weapons, but they will be “only” Koreans.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
So why is there so little public protest today? One factor is certainly the public’s preoccupation with other important issues, among them climate change, immigration, terrorism, criminal justice, civil liberties, and economic inequality. Another appears to be a sense of fatalism. Many people believe that Kim and Trump are too irrational to respond to reason and too autocratic to give way to public pressure. Yet another factor is the belief of Americans and Europeans that their countries are safe from a North Korean attack. Yes, many people will die in a new Korean War, especially one fought with nuclear weapons, but they will be “only” Koreans.

Trump: The Madder he Gets, the More Seriously the World Takes Him

Trump: The Madder he Gets, the More Seriously the World Takes Him | Global politics | Scoop.it
Enrique Ferro's insight:
It’s one thing to have a lunatic in the White House who watches late night television and tweets all day. But when the same lunatic goes to war, it now emerges, he’s a safer bet for democracy, a strong President who stands up to tyrants (unless they happen to be Saudis, Turks or Egyptians) and who acts out of human emotion rather than cynicism. How else can one account for the extraordinary report in The New York Times which recorded how Trump’s “anguish” at the film of dying Syrian babies had led him to abandon “isolationism”?

The Looting Machine Called Capitalism

I have come to the conclusion that capitalism is successful primarily because it can impose the majority of the costs associated with its economic activities on outside parties and on the environment. In other words, capitalists make profits because their costs are externalized and born by others. In the US, society and the environment have to pick up the tab produced by capitalist activity.

In the past when critics raised the question about external costs, that is, costs that are external to the company although produced by the company’s activities, economists answered that it was not really a problem, because those harmed by the activity could be compensated for the damages that they suffered. This statement was intended to reinforce the claim that capitalism served the general welfare. However, the extremely primitive nature of American property rights meant that rarely would those suffering harm be compensated. The apologists for capitalism saved the system in the abstract, but not in reality.

It's Time for Everyone to Admit That Ivanka Trump Is Probably Evil

It's Time for Everyone to Admit That Ivanka Trump Is Probably Evil | Global politics | Scoop.it
We take no pleasure in typing this internet article, but the evidence doesn't lie: Ivanka Trump is almost certainly a Moloch-worshipping weirdo who is going to get us all killed — or worse, force us to buy her dumb clothes.  With the ascendance of public relations, glossy magazines specifically designed to murder brain cells, and cosmetic dentistry, we inhabit a world that delights in self-soothing images and scorns anything that might unsettle our McDonald's-filled stomachs.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Mark Twain would explain the Ivanka Phenomenon slightly differently: She's someone, both in appearance and speech, who reinforces 'conscience-soothing falsities', and a great many millions will thank her for 'the better sleep they enjoy after this process of grotesque self-deception'.

The Establishment Could Win Big in France's 'Unprecedented' Presidential Race

The Establishment Could Win Big in France's 'Unprecedented' Presidential Race | Global politics | Scoop.it
It is curious that the vast majority of commentary in U.S. and West European media about the French presidential vote on Sunday, 23 April concurred: this was an unprecedented repudiation of the political establishment. After all, neither of the winners, Marine Le Pen and Emanuel Macron, belongs to the major center right or center left parties, the Republicans and the Socialists respectively. Much ado is made over the supposedly unprecedented nature of the whole electoral campaign, which was noteworthy for ugly character assassination.

Russia's Jehovah’s Witnesses Ban Is an Assault on the Dignity of Each and Every Russian

Russia's Jehovah’s Witnesses Ban Is an Assault on the Dignity of Each and Every Russian | Global politics | Scoop.it
About 300 Germans were executed by the Third Reich during WWII because they refused to serve in the armed forces as conscientious objectors. About 250 of them were Jehovah's Witnesses. Now Russia, which lost untold millions to The Reich, has banned their church as an "extremist organization". Are Jehovah's Witnesses extremists? Of course they are. Extremely brave, extremely modest, and extremely persistent.

Emmanuel Macron: An insider disguised as an outsider, wrapped in opportunism

Emmanuel Macron: An insider disguised as an outsider, wrapped in opportunism | Global politics | Scoop.it
Macron is the arch-establishment figure. Statements to the contrary are worse than misleading, they are lies.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
To be specific, he left his government post to work as an investment banker at Rothschild & Cie Banque, a position which has about as much anti-establishment credibility as being Hillary Clinton’s speech writer, the EU President or the Prince of Wales. Odd though it may have been for a Rothschild banker to be a member of the French Socialist Party, it is safe to say that Macron declared himself a proverbial Rothschild socialist in order to further his career.

From Korea To Abu Ghraib - War, Bio-Weapons, Torture And Back | Global politics | Scoop.it
Considering the historical record of the United States of committing and covering up warcrimes as well as its general belligerence, North Korea and other nations are probably well advised to stick to their nuclear and missile programs.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
During "Black Thursday" and on other occasions U.S. bomber pilots were captured. Some of them admitted to have dropped biological weapons over China and northern Korea. Their confessions were published in writing and publicized on Korean, Chinese and Russian radio.

New Spin of North Korea-Syria ‘Axis of Evil’ Points to US War

New Spin of North Korea-Syria ‘Axis of Evil’ Points to US War | Global politics | Scoop.it
Demonize, dehumanize, destroy. That’s the logic being throttled by the Trump administration toward both North Korea and Syria. This week war hawk US Senator Lyndsey Graham after a dinner with President Trump referred to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a “nutjob,” while Trump earlier labeled Syrian leader Bashar Assad an “animal.”
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Last week, Fox News accused the countries of having a “long history” of sharing chemical weapons technology, without providing any corroborating details. Meanwhile, a search in the database of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute – a recognized authority on global weapons trade – finds there is scant transfer of military technology, including chemicals, between North Korea and Syria. In any case, claims chemical weapons were deployed by the Syrian government also ignore earlier reports by United Nations agencies that all such munitions had been completely destroyed under a Russian-US brokered decommissioning deal in 2013.

How Mass Media Labels are Feeding into the Shia/Alawi Syrian Genocide | Shafaqna English

How Mass Media Labels are Feeding into the Shia/Alawi Syrian Genocide | Shafaqna English | Global politics | Scoop.it
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Syrian Shias and Alawis are no exception. Like Al-Qaeda in Syria, for the Telegraph to collectively call the massacred Shias as “Asad supporters” or “government supporters” is to reduce their humanity to a political identity, an identity that is stripped of the necessary qualities that engender compassion and sympathy. When a person is reduced to a label, the process of demonization and the enactment of violence becomes all to easy with minimal if no feeling of regret.

Empire Abroad, Empire At Home

Empire Abroad, Empire At Home | Global politics | Scoop.it
Americans are taught to revel in our power and supremacy. Over 650 major military bases span the whole world. We wage endless wars. American corporations are the most powerful economic organizations in history. The fusion of economic and military power makes our empire unlike any the world has ever seen.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
The institutions and ideas U.S. elites used to project “full spectrum dominance” onto the global stage have eventually become part of the political order in the U.S. The “full spectrum” includes us. It is empire — most of all — that dooms democracy and constitutional republics.

Ukraine's State Security Administration is investigating foreigners who 'illegally' entered Crimea to participate in the Yalta International Economic Forum. Because in Ukraine, investing in infrastructure and business development is a crime?
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Again the latest stunt of the Ukrofreak horror show!

This seems to confirm then that the Yalta forum was more than a little successful for Crimea as little effort was made since the 1980’s to develop infrastructure or attract capital investments which could benefit the citizenry of the peninsula.
