Stone Age Chinese People First Tamed Cattle Over 10,000 Years Ago

Stone Age Chinese People First Tamed Cattle Over 10,000 Years Ago | Global politics | Scoop.it
A new study provides the first multi-disciplinary evidence that humans in what is now China first domesticated cattle around 8,000 BC.

Until now, scientists believed that humans started domesticating cattle around 10,000 years ago in the Near East, which gave rise to humpless cattle, while 2,000 years later humans began managing humped cattle in Southern Asia.

However, scientists from China and Europe reveal evidence for management of cattle in north-eastern China around 10,000 years ago. This indicates that Neolithic humans may have started domesticating cows in more regions around the world than was previously believed.

A lower jaw of an ancient cattle specimen was discovered during an excavation in north-east China, and was carbon dated to be 10,660 years old.

The jaw displayed a unique pattern of wear on the molars, which is best explained to be the results of long-term human management of the animal.

Ancient DNA from the jaw revealed that the animal did not belong to the same cattle lineages that were domesticated in the Near East and South Asia.

The combination of the age of the jaw, the unique wear and genetic signature suggests that this find represents the earliest evidence for cattle management in north-east China; a time and place not previously considered as potential domestication centre for cattle.

Bernie and Hillary Twitter Debate Asks: What Makes a "Progressive"?

Bernie and Hillary Twitter Debate Asks: What Makes a "Progressive"? | Global politics | Scoop.it
Bernie Sanders has a few things to say about what makes a progressive a progressive. And he would like potential voters to know more precisely what he means when the specific term is used. What started initially as a question from a campaign reporter in New Hampshire resulted on Wednesday afternoon with a sparring match on Twitter between Sanders and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Poll Shows Clinton, Sanders in Virtual Tie as 'Dems Nationwide Feel the Bern' | Global politics | Scoop.it
A poll released Friday shows Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in a virtual tie nationwide in the Democratic race, representing a major slide down in support for the former secretary of state from a poll less than seven weeks ago. The new Quinnipiac University National poll (pdf) shows Clinton at 44 percent while Sanders is at 42 percent. The survey of over 480 Democrats has a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points, making it a neck-and-neck race.

My 40 Years in Prison

My 40 Years in Prison | Global politics | Scoop.it
What can I say that I have not said before? I guess I can start by saying see you later to all of those who have passed in the last year. We Natives don’t like to mention their names. We believe that if we speak their names it disrupts their journey. They may loose their way and their spirits wander forever. If too many call out to them, they will try to come back. But their spirits know we are thinking about them, so all I will say is safe journey and I hope to see you soon.

On February 6th, I will have been imprisoned for 40 years! I’m 71 years old and still in a maximum security penitentiary. At my age, I’m not sure I have much time left.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

And when I was indicted the average time served on a life sentence before being given parole was 7 years. So that means I’ve served nearly 6 life sentences and I should have been released on parole a very long time ago. Then there’s mandatory release after serving 30 years. I’m 10 years past that. The government isn’t supposed to change the laws to keep you in prison — EXCEPT if you’re Leonard Peltier, it seems.

Election results: chaos in capitalist parties, polarization in... | Global politics | Scoop.it
The fragmentation and division in the Republican and Democratic contests, with no clear front-runner, is likely to drag on through the majority of the nominating season. #2016election #democrats #republicans
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The Clintons were the principal forces that defeated liberalism within the Democratic Party. But Sanders is proving that liberal and social-democratic policies still resonate strongly with the Democratic base. The vast majority of the Democratic electorate wants to see a country where the living standards of working people improve and that is broadly inclusive,  to some degree or another, of oppressed communities.

'It Would Be Suicide': Iran Mocks Saudi Offer to Invade Syria

'It Would Be Suicide': Iran Mocks Saudi Offer to Invade Syria | Global politics | Scoop.it
Although it's difficult to understand the logic of medieval head-choppers, we imagine that Saudi Arabia's offer to send ground forces into Syria was supposed to be perceived as a "threat".
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Is this why the Sunni Saudis have suddenly offered to send ground troops to Syria? And why the Turks are so flustered? I doubt if anyone is weeping in Shia Iran. Anyway, the Saudi military is already having its feet chewed off in the disgraceful Yemen war.

Russian-Syrian Offensive Unmasks Western Media 'Journalism'

Russian-Syrian Offensive Unmasks Western Media 'Journalism' | Global politics | Scoop.it
The breaking of the rebels' supply line from Turkey has exposed the years of lies about 'humanitarian aid', from 'award winning' Western journalists.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

What happened was that the mask of ‘humanitarian relief’ fell off the Western interventionists and their media cheer squads like so much dirty linen, exposing the naked self-interest behind the whole rotten Syrian conspiracy.

While the ridiculous deliberations over what style of terrorist was an acceptable participant in the Geneva talks may have been a vexing spectacle for Syrians, and the attention paid by the Western media to the ‘High Negotiations Committee’ an affront to their senses, it didn’t really surprise anyone.

Hillary Clinton Turns Stand-Up Comic: "I’m a Progressive Who Gets Things Done"

Hillary Clinton Turns Stand-Up Comic: "I’m a Progressive Who Gets Things Done" | Global politics | Scoop.it
In her speech claiming victory after the Iowa caucuses, Hillary Clinton proclaimed herself “a progressive who gets things done.” I had to laugh. And it wasn’t just because former President Bill Clinton – the centrist Triangulator-in-Chief – was standing behind her, beaming and clapping. "Like her husband, Hillary can come off as either centrist or progressive depending on the audience. And depending on the season – left-leaning during primary election season, and corporate centrist in office."
Enrique Ferro's insight:

A quick review of Hillary Clinton’s record shows that much of what she gets done is anti-progressive (not unlike President Clinton in the 1990s). For example:

'Refugees' Harass Women in Russian Nightclub, Are Promptly Beaten and Sent to Prison

'Refugees' Harass Women in Russian Nightclub, Are Promptly Beaten and Sent to Prison | Global politics | Scoop.it
We can't speak for Europe, but in Russia, molesting women in public places is not advisable.A group of approximately 50 "refugees" who were deported from Norway for bad behavior decided to partake in a bit of groping at a Murmansk nightclub.Being Russia, the results were predictable:
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The refugees tried to flee but were quickly captured by the Russians. They then took them out to the street and gave them a beating they will remember. Police arrived to break up the fight but locals report that they threw a few punches at the refugees before arresting 33 of them. Eighteen refugees were in such bad condition they had to be take to the hospital.
