Why Game of Thrones is the Perfect Show for the Modern Age

Why Game of Thrones is the Perfect Show for the Modern Age | Global politics | Scoop.it
Why Game of Thrones is the Perfect Show for the Modern Age Laurie Penny
By now, it feels as if George R R Martin – the author of Game of Thrones, narrative sadist and ruiner of all things beautiful a…
Enrique Ferro's insight:
The idea that The Game of Thrones is a mysoginous story is becoming a myth, and it isn't true. It is a very realistic story as set in an environment like that, as it was, say, England during the War of the Roses. Among the women, there are victims, schemers, heroes... Take Dany, she is the best character, a liberator of slaves, and she outgrows everybody else. But take Cersei, she is cruel and scheming, or take Arya, a PTSD warrior or assassin child, and yet she hasn't lost her compass of justice. Even the Iron girl is heroic... And Brienne? She is arguably the only person in Westeros with a sense of honour. Women are not always victims, there are many men who are also victims of the violent civil war, or the feudal and slavist societies. And yet every single character is an individual, regardless of their gender, transgender, or physical appearance (Tyrion is certainly the most interesting character, while Bran is promising a lot). It is wrong to class the work as mysoginist, it is true that the author makes no concession, and everyone may feel vexed if they want a classic romance of good and evil, à la Tolkien. It is not. It is a Game of Thrones. And every party goes to the kill. Look at the primary season now in the US. There has been no blood (so far). But is there fair play? I Think not. Ah, and I cannot avoid thinking that Hillary, mutatis mutandis, is very much like Cersei. And she is winning! Scruples are not for politics, even less so to ascend to a throne.

Enrique Ferro's insight:
There are dark forces seeking to destroy the ceasefire. This is obviously a provocation to that end. It reminds me the occasion of the chemical attack, and how immediately the West condemned the Syrian government, as if Assad were stupid and would attack his people with gas at the moment the UN inspectors had arrived to Damascus, and prompt Obama's red-line intervention...

Imperialists Hated Donald Trump's Foreign Policy Speech

Imperialists Hated Donald Trump's Foreign Policy Speech | Global politics | Scoop.it
“My foreign policy will always put the interests of Ukrainian people and Ukrainian security above all else. That will be the foundation of every single decision I will make. ‘Ukraine first’ will be the major and overriding theme of my administration."
Enrique Ferro's insight:
I'm neither a registered Republican, nor a Trump supporter. I did not vote for him in my state's primary, either. But as I listened to his speech today - having spent the better part of 15 years poring over US foreign policy and writing hundreds of articles about it at Antiwar.com, here and elsewhere - it struck me that Trump has just made an argument that the Trans-Atlantic Empire has eaten the American Republic alive, and that if there is any hope of saving the latter, the former must be relegated to the dustbin of history.

Why Do Progressives Cling to Hillary?

Why Do Progressives Cling to Hillary? Les Leopold

As the primaries move into their final act, Sanders supporters confront a perplexing question: How could so many progressives vote for Hillary over …
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Actually if they are so infatuated with Hillary, then we should conclude that they aren't "progressive". Just liberal or loyal to the Democratic machine. As for the African Americans, it has been very disappointing indeed, especially after all the harm and the insults they have endured from the House of Clinton. Many have sought for an explanation to this Black vote. For me there is a rational one (after a lot of thinking of it): Follow the Money. What is the Clinton Foundation for? For Charities? Indeed! Most likely focused charities. My theory is these charities have been invested to help community leaders to cope. No doubt the Clintons care. The Black constituency, especially in the south, follow their priests and leaders. Also when they suggest the good ballot.

The Sanders Campaign – From Sea to Shining Sea

The Sanders Campaign – From Sea to Shining Sea | Global politics | Scoop.it
Really, you can’t fault Hillary Clinton’s campaign for trying to get Bernie Sanders out of the race. It’s a campaign – that’s what you do. They want to win the nomination. We on the Sanders side want it too and we’d love to see Clinton out. But we’re also campaigning to change the nation by ending the corporate stranglehold on Washington. And as more and more people come to understand what that's all about, we think we’re winning that campaign.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Back as far as July of last year, former Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank, “a close ally of the Clinton campaign” as the New York Times calls him, argued that no candidate should force Clinton “to spend most of her time and campaign funds between now and next summer proving her ideological purity in an intraparty fight.” Well, it turns out that a lot of people saw it differently and a whole lot of people still see it differently – a whole lot differently.

The Pragmatic Impacts of Sanders’ Big Dreams

The Pragmatic Impacts of Sanders’ Big Dreams | Global politics | Scoop.it
The race for the Democratic presidential nomination has pitted a dreamer against a realist, right? Bernie Sanders is the unrealistic one, and Hillary Clinton, the pragmatist, is the candidate who can get things done. That’s what many pundits say. But, even with Tuesday’s setbacks to the Sanders campaign, it’s worth examining which is actually unrealistic—Bernie’s pledge to make the country more equitable and sustainable? Or Hillary’s progressive talking points, given her deep ties to corporate power players?
