9 myths about the Greek crisis

9 myths about the Greek crisis | Global politics | Scoop.it
The citizens of Greece face a referendum Sunday that could decide the survival of their elected government and the fate of the country in the Eurozone and Europe. Narrowly, they're voting on whether to accept or reject the terms dictated by their creditors last week. But what's really at stake? The answers aren't what you'd think.

Article: NSA's Top Brazilian Political and Financial Targets Revealed by New WikiLeaks Disclosure | Global politics | Scoop.it
That Rousseff's personal cell phone was successfully targeted by NSA spying was previously reported in 2013. That revelation -- along with others exposing NSA mass surveillance on hundreds of millions of Brazilians, and the targeting of the country's state-owned oil company Petrobras and its Ministry of Mines and Energy -- caused a major rupture in relations between the two nations.

Greece – What You are not Being Told by the Media - NationofChange

Greece – What You are not Being Told by the Media - NationofChange | Global politics | Scoop.it
According to mainstream media, the current economic crisis in Greece is due to the government spending too much money on its people that it went broke. This claim however, is a lie. It was the banks that wrecked the country so oligarchs and international corporations could benefit.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Dear Greece, know that the world is praying for you and rooting for you. This weekend, vote NO to austerity. Say YES to freedom, independence, self-government, sovereignty, and democracy. Go to the polls this weekend and give a resounding, clear victory for the 99% in Greece, Europe, and the entire western world.

Corrupted Idealism: Bolivia's Compromise Between Development and the Environment

Corrupted Idealism: Bolivia's Compromise Between Development and the Environment | Global politics | Scoop.it
A policy both environmentally sustainable and economically promising may be challenging to implement, but is by no means impossible and by all means necessary.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The UN General Assembly went so far as to name Morales the "World Hero of Mother Earth," a grandiose title that precipitated the 2010 "Law of Mother Earth," a historic bill passed by Morales' government guaranteeing rights for the Earth itself.[7] The law specifically enshrines seven rights to Mother Earth: life, environmental diversity, water, clean air, equilibrium (or the right to a natural balance in the ecosystem), restoration, and pollution-free living.[8] Perhaps most groundbreaking is the right of an individual to bring forth an issue to court on behalf of Mother Earth.

The Euro: The Folly of Political Currency

The Euro: The Folly of Political Currency | Global politics | Scoop.it
The Freeman is the quarterly publication of the Foundation for Economic Education, published by FEE since 1956
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The people of Europe are being conned. They do not need to sacrifice even more political sovereignty to a group of international bureaucrats and bankers. The dream of the euro—an integrated economic zone with a stable currency—can be achieved through the classical-liberal tenets of free trade and sound money. Continued experiments with fiat money regimes will lead us through a perpetual series of crises, until we are left with a single global fiat currency, the issuer of which has zero accountability to the hapless citizens forced to use it. According to many cynical observers, this after all may be the ultimate plan.

Finian Cunningham - Greek Crisis Awaits Other NATO Partners > Greek Crisis Awaits Other NATO Partners > Strategic-Culture.org - Strategic Culture Foundation | Global politics | Scoop.it
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The United States as the world’s biggest weapons exporter stands to gain decisively from the enlarged European budgets and markets, from the sale of missile systems, tanks, warships and fighter jets. The added bonus for the Washington-dominated International Monetary Fund (IMF) is that if indebtedness of military spendthrift countries ensues then their future economic duress will permit an austerity-driven expropriation of economies for the benefit of Western finance capital. The process is not unlike what has already befallen Greece.

Article: 26 Centuries later, Athens has come full circle

Article: 26 Centuries later, Athens has come full circle | Global politics | Scoop.it
Solon announced a general jubilee - a one-time cancellation of all debts to "shake off their burdens."
His next act was to forbid the enslavement of one Athenian by another and made it a "civic right" rather than a "human right", thus creating the concept of citizenship.
Anticipating that the aristocrats would turn to intimidation against the newly freed debtors and slaves, Solon outlawed acts of hubris...
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Both of these articles violate Solon's law against hubris - telling the Greeks what democracy means.
What Syriza is doing is direct democracy, in the true tradition of ancient Athens, not representative democracy.
It's easy to understand why an American might get confused by the sight of real democracy. After all, Congress just passed the TPP fast-track bill over the objections of the American public, while being barred from telling the public what was in it. And yet we are told that this is democracy.

"The very idea that a government would consult its people on a problematic proposal " was greeted with incomprehension and often with disdain bordering on contempt. I was even asked: 'How do you expect common people to understand such complex issues?'"
- Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis

La inflación no existe

La inflación no existe | Global politics | Scoop.it

12 people who ruined Greece

12 people who ruined Greece | Global politics | Scoop.it
History shows that a long line of leaders helped make Greece the economic basket case it is today.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The troika – made up of the European Commission, European Central Bank, and International Monetary Fund — bears a fair share of the blame for Greece’s current state. The troika’s programs are based on over-optimistic growth projections, which have led to a number of revisions to Greece’s debt sustainability. Fiscal austerity has imposed a huge social cost upon the Greek people, pushing people out of work and into poverty, and leaving hundreds of thousands without access to public healthcare.
