The big fat Greek debt divorce

The big fat Greek debt divorce | Global politics | Scoop.it
The drama is far from over but the third reel has begun. Expect chaos, vast upheaval and ultimately a lure of redemption, even though that finale is months, maybe years, away.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Obsequious apparatchiks such as Euro Parliament speaker Martin Schulz have been humiliated for their self-righteous scaremongering and assorted threats. Nevertheless the outlook is far from easy for Mr. Tsipras. A wounded EU is incapable of delivering the required debt forgiveness. Greece is a de facto former eurozone member - the question is merely which day and by which process. Syriza may prefer expulsion to maintain their stance as beacons of freedom against the totalitarian diktats of German led Euro Imperialists. That Germany was the largest beneficiary of 20th century debt write-offs, has, for now at least, been broadly ignored. Sometime (probably this week) before July government salaries fall due, Greece must start issuing IOUs to cover payments they cannot afford in euro. Moreover, banks will require imminent surgery and injection of new currency which is unlikely to be in euro.

Greece should stay in the euro – European Commission

Greece should stay in the euro – European Commission | Global politics | Scoop.it
Greece should stay within the eurozone, said European Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis speaking at a news conference, adding that eurozone stability was safe.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Dombrovskis is an apparatchik now, and he must have forgotten his native land. In fact the Baltic states are gearing to a Greek scenario, they are falling into the debt trap in order to pay for the weapons they are buying because of their maniatic Russophobia, as exploited by their "allied" arms merchants and bankers... And he also should correct himself: the Greeks haven't seen all those billions he claims Europe gave them, the monies went down the Big Banking drain, which has been the only one to reap profit out of this austerity catastrophic policy.

9 myths about the Greek crisis

9 myths about the Greek crisis | Global politics | Scoop.it
The citizens of Greece face a referendum Sunday that could decide the survival of their elected government and the fate of the country in the Eurozone and Europe. Narrowly, they're voting on whether to accept or reject the terms dictated by their creditors last week. But what's really at stake? The answers aren't what you'd think.

Greece – What You are not Being Told by the Media - NationofChange

Greece – What You are not Being Told by the Media - NationofChange | Global politics | Scoop.it
According to mainstream media, the current economic crisis in Greece is due to the government spending too much money on its people that it went broke. This claim however, is a lie. It was the banks that wrecked the country so oligarchs and international corporations could benefit.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Dear Greece, know that the world is praying for you and rooting for you. This weekend, vote NO to austerity. Say YES to freedom, independence, self-government, sovereignty, and democracy. Go to the polls this weekend and give a resounding, clear victory for the 99% in Greece, Europe, and the entire western world.

Corrupted Idealism: Bolivia's Compromise Between Development and the Environment

Corrupted Idealism: Bolivia's Compromise Between Development and the Environment | Global politics | Scoop.it
A policy both environmentally sustainable and economically promising may be challenging to implement, but is by no means impossible and by all means necessary.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The UN General Assembly went so far as to name Morales the "World Hero of Mother Earth," a grandiose title that precipitated the 2010 "Law of Mother Earth," a historic bill passed by Morales' government guaranteeing rights for the Earth itself.[7] The law specifically enshrines seven rights to Mother Earth: life, environmental diversity, water, clean air, equilibrium (or the right to a natural balance in the ecosystem), restoration, and pollution-free living.[8] Perhaps most groundbreaking is the right of an individual to bring forth an issue to court on behalf of Mother Earth.

Greek crisis: ‘Austerity politics rejected by popular vote, new path for EU,’ says UK analyst

Greek crisis: ‘Austerity politics rejected by popular vote, new path for EU,’ says UK analyst | Global politics | Scoop.it
Austerity policies have been overwhelmingly rejected by popular vote in Greece, paving the way for a more just, humane and “people-centered” Europe, the director of Global Justice Now says.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

‘The dead do not pay their debts.’ Indeed, but the rapacious creditors are expecting the remaining living will pay for the dead until they also die out. Finally someone has been courageous to tell global finance to go bananas, and that enough is enough. The banksters have sucked enough, so now the debt they cheated Greece into has to be written off, and a fresh start allowed to Greece. Wasn't it conceded to Germany after being responsible for millions and millions of dead and huge devastation in Europe? Why not to Greece, which has been imposed a tragic post-war civil war, and then a dictatorship, and finally an enslaving usury. If the current "creditors" are unable to write off their racketeering, Greece will be bound to find elsewhere the solidarity Western Europe is unwilling to give.

Finian Cunningham - Greek Crisis Awaits Other NATO Partners > Greek Crisis Awaits Other NATO Partners > Strategic-Culture.org - Strategic Culture Foundation | Global politics | Scoop.it
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The United States as the world’s biggest weapons exporter stands to gain decisively from the enlarged European budgets and markets, from the sale of missile systems, tanks, warships and fighter jets. The added bonus for the Washington-dominated International Monetary Fund (IMF) is that if indebtedness of military spendthrift countries ensues then their future economic duress will permit an austerity-driven expropriation of economies for the benefit of Western finance capital. The process is not unlike what has already befallen Greece.

Article: 26 Centuries later, Athens has come full circle

Article: 26 Centuries later, Athens has come full circle | Global politics | Scoop.it
Solon announced a general jubilee - a one-time cancellation of all debts to "shake off their burdens."
His next act was to forbid the enslavement of one Athenian by another and made it a "civic right" rather than a "human right", thus creating the concept of citizenship.
Anticipating that the aristocrats would turn to intimidation against the newly freed debtors and slaves, Solon outlawed acts of hubris...
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Both of these articles violate Solon's law against hubris - telling the Greeks what democracy means.
What Syriza is doing is direct democracy, in the true tradition of ancient Athens, not representative democracy.
It's easy to understand why an American might get confused by the sight of real democracy. After all, Congress just passed the TPP fast-track bill over the objections of the American public, while being barred from telling the public what was in it. And yet we are told that this is democracy.

"The very idea that a government would consult its people on a problematic proposal " was greeted with incomprehension and often with disdain bordering on contempt. I was even asked: 'How do you expect common people to understand such complex issues?'"
- Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis
