Kiev promises Russian language status choice as military op enters ‘inactive phase’

Kiev promises Russian language status choice as military op enters ‘inactive phase’ | Global politics | Scoop.it
Kiev has promised to let the regions decide on the status of any languages on their own, calling for “peace and unity.” Troops remain in eastern Ukraine, although the military operation has been rendered “inactive.”
Enrique Ferro's insight:

“Inactive phase” is a way of acknowledging the impotence of the "antiterrorist op" to yield any results whatsoever, as the troops are switching sides and confraternizing with the population. Thanks to the Geneva agreement Kiev has saved face, avoiding a major humiliation.
Now the Ukrainian Eastern populations have to be extremely careful, as the self-imposed regime is not to be trusted. Any implementation even minor of the agreement in the Southeast has to be preceded by steps in Kiev, and within a legal framework. Promises and words are not credible, the Maidan bunch lost all credibility in the February coup.

Robert Fisk: Has Recep Tayyip Erdogan gone from model Middle East 'strongman' to tin-pot dictator? | Global politics | Scoop.it
Recep Tayyip Erdogan used to be one of Barack Obama's cuddliest allies. Religious but secular, powerful but democratic, independent but a reliable Nato chum, he was the kind of guy the White House and the Pentagon could rely on to provide a guiding hand in the Arab part of the old Ottoman empire - and a channel for rebels who could bring down the hated Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

Nato's action plan in Ukraine is right out of Dr Strangelove

Nato's action plan in Ukraine is right out of Dr Strangelove | Global politics | Scoop.it
John Pilger: From China to Ukraine, the US is pursuing its longstanding ambition to dominate the Eurasian landmass
Enrique Ferro's insight:

In February, the US mounted one of its proxy "colour" coups against the elected government of Ukraine; the shock troops were fascists. For the first time since 1945, a pro-Nazi, openly antisemitic party controls key areas of state power in a European capital. No western European leader has condemned this revival of fascism on the border of Russia. Some 30 million Russians died in the invasion of their country by Hitler's Nazis, who were supported by the infamous Ukrainian Insurgent Army (the UPA) which was responsible for numerous Jewish and Polish massacres. The Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, of which the UPA was the military wing, inspires today's Svoboda party.

This is why US farmers are closely monitoring Ukrainian conflict

This is why US farmers are closely monitoring Ukrainian conflict | Global politics | Scoop.it
While the conflict in Ukraine continues to unfold, farmers across the United States have taken a strong interest in the situation since regional instability could have various consequences on wheat and corn supplies around the world.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Since both the Russian ruble and Ukrainian hyrvnia have declined against the US dollar – 10 percent and 35 percent, respectively – there’s also concern that not only will US products become too expensive to import, but also that farmers in those countries will sit on their own crops until their currency rises again. If that’s the case, it could mean restricted global supplies and even higher prices.

‘Letter to Jews’, Kerry cited, appears to be fake

‘Letter to Jews’, Kerry cited, appears to be fake | Global politics | Scoop.it
A letter urging the Jews of Donetsk to get registered, which the US Secretary of State cited in Geneva, is a fake says a man whose signature appears on the communication.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

So Kerry uses a fake letter to discredit the Donetsk protestors, but refuses to mention the actually anti-semitic politics of Pravy Sektor, the Svoboda Party, and so on. It isn't the first time the American politicians lie and use fake "evidence" in order to warrant their policies. Either they must be desperate or they are immoral to the bone. And they lead the world! The "free world" for that matter!!! What a shame. There are people who still want to believe them!

The Jordanian air strike Wednesday April 16 against an armored vehicle convoy from Syria destroyed an Al Qaeda raider force on its way to attack a US military target, debkafile reveals. Jordan’s first assault on a target outside the country took place on the Syrian side of the border opposite the eastern Jordanian town of Ruwaished. At a secret base nearby, Iraqi troops are being instructed by US and Jordanian instructors in counter-terror combat tactics. This episode dramatizes the escalating Al Qaeda-Iraq threat to Jordan, US forces based there and Israel.

Syria: As the bombs fall, the people of Damascus rally round Bashar al-Assad - Telegraph | Global politics | Scoop.it
The West may oppose Assad's regime, but on the streets of the capital the people fear a greater evil
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Damascus is not normal in the slightest. Several of its suburbs are held by rebel fighters, who pound government-held areas with mortars. These do not have the range to reach the city centre, but most people live under the shadow of constant attack. It is as if the residents of Clapham had conceived a desire to annihilate Wimbledon and Brixton, and Islington had declared war on Camden Town.
