The Looting Stage of Capitalism: Germany’s Assault on the IMF

The Looting Stage of Capitalism: Germany’s Assault on the IMF | Global politics | Scoop.it
So far the so-called “creditors” have only pledged to some form of debt relief, not yet decided, beginning in 2 years.  By then the younger part of the Greek population will have emigrated and will have been replaced by immigrants fleeing Washington’s Middle Eastern and African wars who will have loaded up Greece’s unfunded welfare system.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
The banks don’t want Greece to be able to service its debt, because the banks intend to use Greece’s inability to service the debt in order to loot Greece of its assets and resources and in order to roll back the social safety net put in place during the 20th century. Neoliberalism intends to reestablish feudalism—a few robber barons and many serfs: the One Percent and the 99 percent.

Hope and Burnout in the Anthropocene

Hope and Burnout in the Anthropocene | Global politics | Scoop.it
Between May 3 and May 16, thousands of people gathered in 20 acts of civil disobedience spanning 6 continents, to protest society’s continued reliance on fossil fuels. Dubbing their collective action “Break Free 2016,” they placed themselves in the paths of oil trains, coal ships and mining equipment, in an effort to convince those in power of the urgency of action on climate change.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
"As activists, it is important to remember that we have named this a crisis, and that we did so because we intended to solve it. We chose this work out of love and terror and urgency, and those emotions are the source both of our fatigue and our will to act." For the past 8 months, I’ve been cycling through Asia

Amid Election Chaos, Communities Show Where the Real Power Is

Amid Election Chaos, Communities Show Where the Real Power Is | Global politics | Scoop.it
A year ago, it looked like we were in for a tedious election with yet another Bush pitted against another Clinton. Not so, as it turned out.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Countries such as Canada, Germany, Sweden and Britain all follow something like a single-payer approach and pay much less for health care than the United States does. While the United States spent 16.4 percent of gross domestic product on health care in 2013, Canada paid only 10.2 percent; Germany, 11 percent; Sweden, 11 percent; and Britain, 8.5 percent.

Bernie Sanders Easily Wins the Policy Debate

Bernie Sanders Easily Wins the Policy Debate | Global politics | Scoop.it
Mainstream U.S. economists have criticized Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’s proposals as unworkable, but these economists betray the status quo bias of their economic models and professional experience. It’s been decades since the United States had a progressive economic strategy, and mainstream economists have forgotten what one can deliver. In fact, Sanders’s recipes are supported by overwhelming evidence — notably from countries that already follow the policies he advocates.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Neck-and-Neck in California as Sanders Virtually Erases 50-Point Deficit

Neck-and-Neck in California as Sanders Virtually Erases 50-Point Deficit | Global politics | Scoop.it
Less than two weeks before California's critical Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are locked in a dead heat in that state, according to a poll released Wednesday. The same poll (pdf) shows Sanders outperforming Clinton in a hypothetical match-up against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Sanders is a long-distance runner, but now he is about to win by a sizable leg the last sprint. Clinton is exhausted, she is finished. E-mail indictment or not, we are about to behold the fall of the House of Clinton.Good riddance!

Students With Nowhere to Stay: Homelessness on College Campuses

Students With Nowhere to Stay: Homelessness on College Campuses | Global politics | Scoop.it
Some US colleges have programs to meet the needs of homeless students, but many schools still lack comprehensive services.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
In parsing the results, they discovered that homeless and hungry students were a varied lot: Some had not had enough to eat or had been homeless throughout their childhoods; some had aged out of foster care and had no family to turn to; and some had a falling out with their parents or guardians, or had their family ties altered by deportation or incarceration.

Neocons' Latest Foreign Policy Initiative Spells 'Abysmal Failure' for US

Neocons' Latest Foreign Policy Initiative Spells 'Abysmal Failure' for US | Global politics | Scoop.it
"For too long now, the adherents of a hawkish school of foreign policy, often referred to as neocons, have repurposed the definition of 'leadership' to mean international engagement, enabled by the stationing of combat forces or outright employing lethal military power abroad, to 'shape' or coerce foreign governments to comply with American directives," Davis explained.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
At the same time, US hardliners have branded any advocates of lesser engagement as weak or soft and incapable of making decisive actions. This militaristic approach, according to the analyst, "ultimately undercuts American interests and violates traditional American values." Davis offered Syria as a case in point. If She Wins: These Three Clinton Decisions May Ruin US Foreign Policy

If She Wins: These Three Clinton Decisions May Ruin US Foreign Policy | Global politics | Scoop.it
The truth of the matter is that Hillary Clinton is backed by the US omnipotent military industrial complex and she will represent its interests, not those of the American people, he noted.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
"Hillary is a warmonger. She pushed the Obama regime into the destruction of a stable and largely cooperative government in Libya… She has pushed for 'regime change' in Syria… She brought neoconservative Victoria Nuland, who arranged the coup that overthrew the democratically elected president of Ukraine, into the State Department. Hillary has called President Vladimir Putin of Russia the 'new Hitler.' Hillary as president guarantees war and more war," Roberts wrote. Hillary Clinton's New Anti-Trump Ad Misses the Mark

Hillary Clinton's New Anti-Trump Ad Misses the Mark | Global politics | Scoop.it
A new attack ad put out by the Hillary Clinton campaign this week achieves the near-impossible, making Donald Trump look wronged and (almost) like a victim. More believably, it makes the Democrats look sleazy and disingenuous in comparison. The ad begins with a picture of a grinning Trump and the words, "In 2006, Donald Trump was hoping for a real estate crash."
Enrique Ferro's insight:
"Let's be aggressive distributing things," he said, "because there will be very good opportunities as the markets [go] into what is likely to be even greater distress, and we want to be in a position to take advantage of them." This, coming from the chief financial officer of a firm that has been among Hillary Clinton's top donors, is exactly what Donald Trump said. The difference was, Donald Trump was just talking about making money for himself. Goldman executives were talking about making money at their own clients' expense.

They’re requesting that we divulge any communication we may have had with state officials and many private organizations with regard to looking into what Exxon knew about climate change and when. At face value this request is a threat to constitutional rights.

Holocaust Survivor and Human Rights Activist Hedy Epstein Dies at 91

Holocaust Survivor and Human Rights Activist Hedy Epstein Dies at 91 | Global politics | Scoop.it
ST. LOUIS, Missouri – Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein, 91, died at her home in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, on May 26, 2016. An internationally renowned, respected and admired advocate for human and civil rights, Hedy was encircled by friends who lovingly cared for her at home.Born August 15, 1924, in the Bavarian region of Germany, her lifelong commitment to human rights was formed by the horrific experiences she and her family endured under the repressive Nazi regime.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Rest in peace, Hedy! I met her years ago in the West Bank, at a demonstration protesting against the Apartheid Wall, when the soldiers shoot at the legs of an Israeli protester, who was evacuated by the Palestinians as the soldiers refused to take him to the hospital. And there she was, a frail but determined old lady, with a great young spirit, looking for somebody who could take her to Ramallah... Afterwards I met her more times. She always remained on my mind as the embodiment of internationalism and compassion. I see she adopted the words "Stay Human", uttered by an Italian International, Vittorio Arrigoni, murdered by al-Qaeda in Gaza. So many heroes for a just cause, as started by Rachel Corrie, and kept by the presence of so many Israeli pacifists, like Dorothy Naor... Hedy Epstein will always enlighten the path of the young whose dreams come true sooner or later. Good-bye, Hedy!

Sanders to Trump: Let's Debate in 'Biggest Stadium Possible'

Sanders to Trump: Let's Debate in 'Biggest Stadium Possible' | Global politics | Scoop.it
Update:
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Yuuuuuge! A great news! A glorious stunt! While Hillary is hiding behind her tricks and rigging, these two giants of the primary season, the real contenders for the White House, will debate their policies even before they have been nominated for the final struggle. Every one will be able to see the metal they are made with, and Hillary will remain marginalized in the public opinion, for all the unconditional media intoxication. After the debate, Bernie will crush her in California and elsewhere, even if the DNC seeks to suppress voters. At the end of the day Bernie will collect more pledged delegates, and the superdelegates will have to adjust accordingly.

''Significant Security Risks'': State Department Says Clinton Broke Rules Using Private Email Server

''Significant Security Risks'': State Department Says Clinton Broke Rules Using Private Email Server | Global politics | Scoop.it
This contradicts claims by Clinton that use of a home server was allowed and that no permission was needed. The report also criticized Clinton for not properly preserving emails she wrote and received on her personal account. According to the report, Clinton and eight of her deputies, including Cheryl Mills, Jake Sullivan and Huma Abedin, declined to be interviewed for the inspector general's investigation. Clinton's use of a private email server for State Department business is also the subject of an ongoing FBI investigation.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
So, whether or not you think that the classification regime of the federal government is sound, that has no bearing on whether the regime that exists should be applied broadly and equitably. And in insisting, as Hillary Clinton and her surrogates have done, that this is no big deal, they're essentially arguing for a different standard to be applied to themselves. And that's why people have so little faith in the system. And it's not just for product of Republican fearmongering that there is this hunch that the law is not going to be applied in an equal manner.

Brazil: The Provisional Banana Scoundrel Republic

Brazil: The Provisional Banana Scoundrel Republic | Global politics | Scoop.it
Temer the Brief, a lowly puppet, is now under siege. His two manipulators – the former leader of the lower house and his short-lived Minister of Planning – are now forced to be in the shade. Practically, that means approving deeply unpopular economic policies in Congress will be much harder.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Share yourOne of the key plotters outlines the coup; stresses how it should protect Brazilian plutocracy/kleptocracy from unintended consequences of the ongoing, two-year-old Car Wash corruption investigation; and how the Left – from President Rousseff to Lula and the Workers’ Party – should be criminalized for good.
