US Dream of Toppling Putin Backfires Big Time

US Dream of Toppling Putin Backfires Big Time | Global politics | Scoop.it
Editor's Note: Helmer points out what should be obvious to the policy wonks in Washington: Attempts by foreign powers to bring Russia to her knees never work out well. The Russian economic recovery went sharply into reverse in February, according to the latest report from Rosstat, the federal state statistics service.  But voter approval for President Vladimir Putin remains super-stable at a level unknown in Europe or the rest the world.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Putin’s achievement cannot be exaggerated -- no political leader of a major country in the world is recording such durably high approval ratings. But the achievement is qualified. Without the US war in Ukraine, then US and European Union (EU) sanctions, the approval line for Putin would have continued downwards as the collapse of the oil price and the rouble tipped the economy into recession, and as Russian voters lost trust in their future.

Newsweek finds a creative way to link Putin to the London terror attack
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Although no direct links between Russia and the attack can be established (yet), our friends at Newsweek are reporting that Putin used the tragedy as a diversion so he could terrorize Ukraine with impunity. This is not a drill. This is the U.S. media:

Russia and China Catch Security Council in a Devastating Lie

Russia and China Catch Security Council in a Devastating Lie | Global politics | Scoop.it
Security Council members expressed “unanimous concern” about Islamic State's use of chemical weapons in Iraq — then blocked a Russia-China resolution to investigate. Why?
Enrique Ferro's insight:
"Unanimous concern" is a meaningless baloney phrase used to feign outrage about atrocities in non-western countries We suppose a third possibility is that "someone else" has been using chemical weapons in Mosul. At any rate, Russia and China just caught the West in a big, embarrassing and shameful lie — and anyone who's paying attention can see the double-standards and hypocrisy. This is just the latest diplomatic team victory for Beijing and Moscow. Expect many more.

Russia Has Unfair Military Advantage Because It’s Not Bombing Seven Countries, Notes US Smartypants

Russia Has Unfair Military Advantage Because It’s Not Bombing Seven Countries, Notes US Smartypants | Global politics | Scoop.it
But much of the U.S.'s spending is paying for military operations overseas, such as the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

“U.S. forces … go halfway around the world to fight. And they fight in the other guy’s backyard, at times in places of the other guy’s choosing. And that’s the problem,” said David Ochmanek, senior defense researcher at the RAND Corporation.

China and Russia, meanwhile, are spending heavily on “modernization” to improve their militaries' quality, efficiency and overall performance. The strategy is paying huge dividends, especially for China.
Yes, of course. It's so simple, and so unfair: The Pentagon is forced to spend money on bombing defenseless brown people all over the world. Meanwhile, the devious Russians and Chinese can modernize their military forces.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Our favorite example of this uniquely American philosophy is when the City of Los Angeles decided that it would fix its failing public education system by spending $1.3 billion to provide each and every pupil with an iPad — because that will make them learn better.

US Media Falls in Love With Unhinged British Witch Who Wants to Bomb Russia

US Media Falls in Love With Unhinged British Witch Who Wants to Bomb Russia | Global politics | Scoop.it
In fact, Mensch does not really have a background in anything at all. Having left Parliament after just two years—and thereby handed her seat to the Labour Party—she dabbled in failed venture after failed venture. She started a widely-mocked fashion blog called Unfashionista, which soon folded. She then started a widely-mocked social media app called—absurdly—“Menshn,” which soon folded. She was appointed to head a new Murdoch venture called Heat Street, a right-wing clickbait site essentially exactly like Breitbart but with more news about GamerGate. But her constant bizarre tweets allegedly factored into News Corp’s decision to part ways with her in January. Instead, Mensch now runs a WordPress blog called “Patribotics” dedicated almost entirely to elaborating her theories about Putin, and examining her various “suspects” like Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
The question remains, though: what was the New York Times thinking by printing Mensch’s conspiratorial questioning? Granted, the Times has a somewhat ignominious history with guest op-ed columnists, having given Woody Allen space to defend himself against molestation allegations, and allowed Bill Clinton to issue a weaselly justification for offering pardons to his wealthy cronies—a column so full of evasions that a paragraph-long editor’s note had to be attached to the end. (And if you want to advocate bombing North Korea, the Times will happily act as your megaphone.) But even by the existing standard, publishing someone like Mensch is extraordinary.

Moral Failure at the United Nations

Moral Failure at the United Nations | Global politics | Scoop.it
Trump failed to issue any of his characteristic tweets in reference to the Israel’s barbaric behavior.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
On 15 March 2017 the United Nations’ Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) published a report on Israeli practices and policies toward the Palestinians. Using international law as its comparative criterion, the report came to a “definitive conclusion” that “Israel is guilty of Apartheid practices.” The term Apartheid was not used in the report merely in a “pejorative” way. It was used as a descriptor of fact based on the evidence and the accepted legal meaning of the term. Such was the immediate uproar from the United States and Israel that U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in a moment of moral failure, ordered the report’s withdrawal. The head of ESCWA, the Jordanian diplomat Rima Khalaf, decided that she could not, in good conscience, do so and so tendered her resigation.

Russophobia – Symptom of US Implosion

Unable to accept the reality that the governing structure of the US has lost legitimacy in the eyes of the people, that the people rebelled by electing an outsider in the form of business mogul-turned-politician Donald Trump,
Enrique Ferro's insight:
There is a perception among some of the public and within the alternative media that America’s burgeoning national-security state is a monolith, a collective entity pursuing its own interests regardless of what is good for the country or its people. From both progressives and conservatives who mistrust the government, I often hear comments such as, “Once in the CIA, always in the CIA”—as if onetime employment in the agency forms an unbreakable bond.

An Obama Plot to Sabotage Trump?

An Obama Plot to Sabotage Trump? | Global politics | Scoop.it
The real scandal, which the media regard as a diversion from the primary target, Trump, is that a Deep State conspiracy to bring down his presidency seems to have been put in place by Obamaites, and perhaps approved by Obama himself.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
The U.S. intelligence community, says Nunes, during surveillance of legitimate targets, picked up the names of Trump transition officials during surveillance of targets, "unmasked" their identity, and spread their names around, virtually assuring they would be leaked. If true, this has the look and smell of a conspiracy to sabotage the Trump presidency, before it began.

The US government does not thoroughly report contractor deaths, their families are often not compensated for their deaths and injuries, and contractor health care is generally substandard. Foreign workers for US contracting firms often do not have their deaths recorded or compensated.

Wall Street First

Wall Street First | Global politics | Scoop.it
Trump's election rhetoric promised to reverse traditional U.S. interventionist policy abroad. Making an anti-war left run around the Democrats, he promised to stop backing ISIS/Al Nusra (President Obama’s “moderate” terrorists supplied with the arms and money that Hillary looted from Libya), and to reverse the Obama-Clinton administration’s New Cold War with Russia.
Enrique Ferro's insight:
Nobody yet can tell whether Donald Trump is an agent of change with a specific policy in mind, or merely a catalyst heralding an as yet undetermined turning point. His first month in the White House saw him melting into the Republican mélange of corporate lobbyists. Having promised to create jobs, his “America First” policy looks more like “Wall Street First.”
