Most tightly-packed exoplanet system discovered 1,100 light years away -- a year lasts only a few days

Most tightly-packed exoplanet system discovered 1,100 light years away -- a year lasts only a few days | Global politics | Scoop.it

The Kepler space telescope has spotted the most tightly-packed exoplanet system yet, with five planets orbiting around the star KOI-500 within a fraction of the distance between Mercury and our Sun. The planets orbit their star in (going from innermost to outermost) 1.0, 3.1, 4.6, 7.1, and 9.5 days each, respectively, and each planet is between 1.3 and 2.6 times the size of the Earth. The outer four planets exist in a kind of orbital resonance, which sees them return to a set formation every 191 days -- that seems to keep them from being knocked out of orbit by each others' gravitaties and hurled either further out into the system or into the star to burn up.

The system was discovered by Darin Ragozzine, a planetary scientist at the University of Florida at Gainesville, and his team. It's roughly 1,100 light years from us, in the direction of the constellation Lyre. Its five planets are each slightly larger than the Earth, but their orbits are remarkably close to KOI-500 -- 150 times smaller than the orbit of the Earth. That's even less than the orbital distance of Mercury. Yet despite flying around so fast that it's only a manner of Earth days for each "year", they exist in an orbital resonance that keeps them from crashing into each other or falling into the star.

Social media deception: Venezuela exposes “La Salida” conspiracy

Social media deception: Venezuela exposes “La Salida” conspiracy | Global politics | Scoop.it
From February to June 2014, Venezuela experienced a period of violence and terrorism by individuals whose stated goal was to force “La Salida,” (the Exit) of the elected government.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

No matter how many times the Bolivarian government has been democratically re-elected, how much the hostile private Venezuelan media is tolerated, or how mildly the extremist opposition is treated, these claims persist. Because the Maduro government continues opposing neoliberalism and the domination of Wall Street banks, western politicians and media pundits continue to insist that it cannot be legitimate.

Bill O’Reilly, Brian Williams, and the corporate media phantasmagoria

Bill O’Reilly, Brian Williams, and the corporate media phantasmagoria | Global politics | Scoop.it
The scandals that have erupted around the exposure of Bill O’Reilly and Brian Williams as having lied about their wartime experiences provide us with a glimpse into the nature of corporate media.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

The war on Syria is built on a foundation of lies. Everything from phrases such as “moderate rebels” to “Assad has lost his legitimacy” is a pernicious fabrication or distortion designed to influence public opinion. And it is quite successful, as the US is bombing targets in Syria as we speak.

Even more dangerous are the lies being disseminated as “facts” regarding the situation in Ukraine. “Russian aggression against Ukraine,” and “Russia shooting down MH 17,” are merely two of the seemingly endless supply of myths being propagated by the media sycophants to power. The meme of “Putin the maniac” and “Putin as Hitler” are no different from what was said about Saddam, Gaddafi, and Assad, though perhaps with Putin the cries are even more shrill as Russia is no Iraq, Libya, or Syria.

N. Ireland’s ‘draconian’ abortions laws ‘harshest in Europe’ – Amnesty | Global politics | Scoop.it
Northern Ireland’s abortion laws are the harshest in Europe and “urgently” need reform, Amnesty International said Friday. Women seeking an illegal abortion face life in prison, even if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

So much struggle for this? Freedom is indivisible.

Fort Russ: "We are losing"--Maidan die-hard toys with the idea of military dictatorship | Global politics | Scoop.it
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Loads of rubbish. Thinking like that Ukrainians will be wiped out from the history books. They'd rather focus on rebuilding their country and establishing a federation which would recognize the other ethno-linguistic populations. As long as they persist in imposing a Ukrainizing dictatorship, all they'll get is more defeat, because the rest will fight for their homes and culture, and won't tolerate a Galician invasion.

The truth about Russia’s new military doctrine

The truth about Russia’s new military doctrine | Global politics | Scoop.it
The new version of Russia’s military doctrine, approved by President Putin on December 26, 2014, has attracted increased attention in the Western media, especially, its provisions for the eventual use of nuclear weapons.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Prevention of a nuclear military conflict, as well as any other military conflict, is seen as the most important task. With regard to military scenarios, the Russian Federation reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in response to the use of nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction against itself and (or) its allies, as well as in the case of aggression against the Russian Federation with the use of conventional weapons, when there is a threat to the very existence of the nation.

Britain’s Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and his French counterpart, Laurent Fabius, said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must not be part of any future government or participate in the US-led alliance against Islamic State.
