Personal Leadership: It's All About the People, Stupid!

Personal Leadership: It's All About the People, Stupid! | Team Success : Global Leadership Coaching Tips and Free Content | Scoop.it
Many leaders just want to tell their people the goal, and then expect them to just go out and create amazing success without any guidance, coaching, managing, or ...leading. Leadership is all about the people one leads.

(From the article): Personal leadership is all about relationships with those you lead. Simply learning the names of one’s team-members is not sufficient to building a strong team of committed workers, although it s start.  By learning their values, skills and dreams, you learn how they see themselves within the organizational structure.  Instead of simply evaluating their work, seek opportunities for them to provide feedback on the organization.  Take care to listen, and see if you can incorporate their ideas.

David Hain's curator insight, February 8, 2013 2:50 AM

We all love a good listening to! We collect and repay units of recognition! Individualised attention is free and quick. It takes less than two minutes of your time but often makes someone else’s day!

Compassion Toward Ourselves to Bring More Compassion to Others

Compassion Toward Ourselves to Bring More Compassion to Others | Team Success : Global Leadership Coaching Tips and Free Content | Scoop.it
What is compassion? Human beings have been contemplating the true meaning of it for many thousands of years.
Belinda MJ.B's insight:

When we think about compassion, it is easy and obvious to think about it in relationship to others. As soon as one turns on the news, it is easy to become inundated with images of strife from all around the world. Of course, directing compassionate thought towards others is a critical part of celebrating our common humanity. However, it is not the only facet with which we must be...

The cult of the global leader is spreading ! But more responsibilities come with the job.

Globalization is not a static concept. What you knew about fast developing countries like Russia and its cultural differences in term of consumer taste, regulations, politics or technology is obsolete after one year or two, so how do you monitor those changes in more than 60 countries if you are the top executives of true global companies ?

Global leaders need to live abroad at least 2-3 years in key countries to really understand local cultures, traveling is not a substitute for being an expat.

I cannot agree more with this statement:

"If leadership has a secret sauce, it may well be humility. A humble boss understands that there are things he doesn’t know. He listens: not only to the other bigwigs in Davos, but also to the kind of people who don’t get invited, such as his customers"

Anne Egros's curator insight, January 23, 2013 1:29 PM

I have been an expat by choice for 20+ years and I am guilty of being sometimes an ugly expat (especially complaining about local bureaucracy or simply craving for some food I can only find in my own country) BUT, I would never judge another expat based on my own experience.

In fact, I think there is no such thing as an ugly expat, only lonely or frustrated people who simply don’t know how to get their basic needs met. Not everybody get cross-cultural training or can afford to hire an expat coach before moving abroad to understand what specific challenges they will face in a new country.

They never heard about words like “TCK” or “trailing spouse” or “culture shock” and why should they ?

Lets be practical and realistic : If you don’t speak the language, never visited the country and know nobody there, I would strongly suggest that you call first your embassy to get in touch with other expats who can understand you and how you feel, provide resources they tested such as medical centers, shopping etc.. You will have more chance to be a happy expat !

Here a great article from felllow expat coach Margarita Gokun Silver:http://globalcoachcenter.com/7-habits-of-a-happy-expat
I like particularly habit # 5: Happy expats know that feeling sad at times is part of the game ( and that you are allowed to vent your frustration too )

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF EXPATS YOU KNOW ? DO YOU THINK MAJORITY ARE GOOD,  BAD OR UGLY ONES ?

Let go of controlling your mind. Daydreaming is an attribute of successful people.

"Daydreaming, as a mental state activating both the default and executive networks of the brain, plays an important role in that organizing and processing. What you may think is just your mind drifting is actually your mind actively forming connections between information, synthesizing what was previously only chaos, and preparing the ground for the moment when things suddenly fit into place."

Courage: An Essential Leadership Trait

Courage: An Essential Leadership Trait | Team Success : Global Leadership Coaching Tips and Free Content | Scoop.it

According to Aristotle, courage is the first virtue because it makes all other virtues possible.

Here is a list of ten things you can do as a leader to show and develop courage:

1. Stand up for what is right even if your opinion is unpopular.
2. Keep quiet and let others speak even if you think they are wrong.
3. Delegate with confidence.
4. Say what you mean, and mean what you say.
5. Take responsibility for your actions.
6. Maintain your integrity even when temptation abounds.
7. Ask what you can give, rather than what you can get.
8. Give credit where credit is due.
9. Be kind when giving feedback.
10. Ask. Don’t tell.

Many would say if you’re in the leadership business, you’re also in the business of dealing with adversity. Regardless of where you are in your life and your career, I can promise you one thing; you will consistently be faced with challenges and obstacles along the way. In today’s post I will take a brief look at the beliefs that cause some to succeed where others fail.

You will face physical, mental, financial, relational, and resource challenges among others. Instead of beating yourself up or giving in, it is critical you develop the ability to learn from setbacks. In a nutshell, dealing with barriers, obstacles, and setbacks requires both attitude and aptitude. So, do you have the skills and perspective to thrive under pressure and to succeed, or will you implode when faced with a challenge?

Just as a diamond cannot be polished without friction, neither can you fully develop your skills without them being tested by adversity. Use obstacles and failures as an opportunity to polish your skills. I think Winston Churchill said it best when he noted, “The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; the optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
