The process of self-actualization

Self-actualization means you know exactly who you are, where you are going, and what you want to accomplish in life. It is a state of well-being.

Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist and best known for his theory of the “Hierarchy of Needs”. The last step of his “Hierarchy of Needs” is “Self-actualization”. Abraham Maslow described here the ongoing process of fully developing the own potential. It is good to know that self-actualization is a process not a goal. It is a process that should slowly develop.

I am particularly interested in this topic since I specialize in assisting executives, expatriates and individuals to succeed in a global environment. Knowledge of the cultural rules in addition to the mentor and the adjustment of the behavior are a great start but might provide limited results and synergies.

 

I have found very important for my clients to know themselves from the inside out by assessing and challenging their own values, behaviors and belief systems prior to take an assignment in a multicultural team or abroad. Ultimately, by going through this process, we evaluate how much the difficulties they experience in life or at work are related to perception which is based on someone's background, education,culture...

 

With this mindset, leaders and managers working in a new cultural environment are willing to listen, to accept a different perspective as an opportunity and to be authentic global leaders.

If you talk about being assigned to another country or region of the world, it simply increases the odds of success for the individual, for his new team and for his organization. (From the article): The reason why most of us don’t accomplish more is because we set our goals inside our mental barriers, where it’s safe. (That’s why it’s called “the comfort zone.”)

 

But if you want to get unstuck and start getting traction again, you have to set your goals on the other side of the barrier. You don’t have to get crazy, but you do have to stretch yourself and push past the invisible barrier in your head.

 

This is the secret to achieving break-through results.
