Do you know the main differences between executive coaching and therapy? While both focus on personal development, they each serve a separate purpose.
Therapy is often aimed at helping people with mental, behavioral, or emotional difficulties. Thus, it commonly focuses on helping people with psychological disorders, as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, function normally again. Some types of therapy, like couples therapy, may not be focused on alleviating mental illness, but are still meant to treat problems. Most therapy sessions take place in an office setting.
Executive coaching, on the other hand, is geared toward people who are generally mentally stable, but aim to achieve greater life success and business success. An executive coach should not be expected to treat or diagnose a mental illness; most are not qualified to do so. Rather, an executive coach focuses on helping the client along their path to personal development by teaching them goal-setting strategies, effective communication techniques, and other methods that are applicable in most people’s lives. Virginia Tech is sponsoring "contemplative practices for a technological society," a conference for engineers who integrate contemplative disciplines into their work. Google offers courses in meditation and yoga
Aetna, Merck, General Mills--the list goes on--all are exploring how meditation can help their leaders and employees agilely thrive in today's fast-paced business environment. And the benefits are widely publicized: sustained attention span, improved multi-tasking abilities, strengthened immune system, increased emotional intelligence, improved listening skills...And there is science behind such claims. Today’s tip for increasing your emotional intelligence is the most simple and straightforward you’re ever going to get. For many people, this tip has the potential to have a bigger impact upon their emotional intelligence (EQ) than any other. The catch? You have to cut down on caffeine, and as any caffeine drinker can attest, this is easier said than done.
The Good: Isn’t Really Good
Most people start drinking caffeine because it makes them feel more alert and improves their mood. Many studies suggest that caffeine actually improves cognitive task performance (memory, attention span, etc.) in the short-term. Unfortunately, these studies fail to consider the participants’ caffeine habits. New research from Johns Hopkins Medical School shows that performance increases due to caffeine intake are the result of caffeine drinkers experiencing a short-term reversal of caffeine withdrawal. By controlling for caffeine use in study participants, John Hopkins researchers found that caffeine-related performance improvement is nonexistent without caffeine withdrawal.
