The Power of Negative Thinking

The Power of Negative Thinking | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
Both ancient philosophy and modern psychology suggest that darker thoughts can make us happier, writes Oliver Burkeman.

Via Belinda MJ.B
Belinda MJ.B's curator insight, December 16, 2012 6:01 PM

Positive affirmations works great in an environment where we feel comfortable already.

Evaluate the worse case scenario by using "negative thinking" and explore opportunities then solutions will often provide better results under stress. Indeed as explained in this interesting article, by anticipating this worst case scenario the power of anxiety and stress from the situation lessens.

How much knowledge is too much?

How much knowledge is too much? | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
Whether you are trying to be a successful entrepreneur, parent or friend, it’s wise to calibrate your knowledge meter. How much knowledge is too much?
Anne Egros's insight:

Knowledge can either supplement or detract from inspiration. It really boils down to perspective.

Read, write, explore and take it all in, but then remember to give yourself some time to let all of it manifest, and savor all of the new information you’ve received before you move on to acquiring more.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, June 19, 6:43 PM

Knowledge does not replace wisdom. Information does not replace knowledge.

The next generation is inspiring. They are called Generation Z or the Pluralist Generation and we need to embrace their leadership skills and abilities.

Knowledge can be built without attending school but strong leadership skills are built when kids get opportunity to be creative, to challenge the status quo and actually do what adults say are impossible.

12 Reasons To Stop Multitasking

Anne Egros's insight:

Very good examples that should make you think about re-designing your life and your work if you feel constantly distracted and have your energy consumed by doing different things simultaneously.

More than 15 years ago, Steven Covey already identified the problem and gave us a method to focus on doing most important tasks to reach our true goals in his book "First Things First".

How Do Artists Differ From Bank Officers? | Beautiful Minds, Scientific American Blog Network | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
What are creative people like? As we saw in my prior post, various creativity researchers tend to converge on the same conclusion: creative people are complex. ...
Anne Egros's insight:

Sounds familiar to me :

"Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but often need their rest. They tend to be both introverted and extroverted at the same darn time. And perhaps most strikingly, their high levels of openness to experience and sensitivity expose them to great suffering and pain as well as intense joy and euphoria"

Flat is the new up: Why are companies using organizational structures that are thousands of years old? | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
Businesses regularly evolve to meet modern new challenges, so why do they rely on the same old military-style organizational hierarchies?

Via Billy R Bennett
Anne Egros's insight:

Despite the astronomical speed of technology changes, most organizations still operate within the traditional top-down authority model.

The article suggest that the future of organizations is "Holacracy" where the organizational power is distributed according to a set of explicit processes and structures designed to achieve the company’s purpose.

In a Holacracy, every role in the organization has an explicit, documented purpose and set of accountabilities, and roles exist separately from the individuals who happen to be filling them at the time.

Billy R Bennett's curator insight, April 27, 11:00 PM

Think that your organization is leading edge...pushing the envelope of engagement?   Take a look at these current structures from tech organizations some more than a decade old.

You can be different.

How Effective is Your Communication? by Keith Rosen

How Effective is Your Communication? by Keith Rosen | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
Communication is an activity that occupies approximately 70% of our waking hours and also something we tend to struggle with on a regular basis.
Anne Egros's insight:
Good question to ask to yourself : Am I taking full responsibility for the message being heard by the other person? (Remember, it doesn’t matter what you say, it only matters what the other person hears.)
Belinda MJ.B's curator insight, June 3, 3:45 PM

It is common sense that we should listen to ourselves when we speak. Indedd, we tend to forget that what we say doesn't matter. That's actually how it is perceived by others that will remain the most important.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, June 3, 6:47 PM

Motivating people: Getting beyond money | McKinsey & Company

Motivating people: Getting beyond money | McKinsey & Company | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
The economic slump offers business leaders a chance to more effectively reward talented employees by emphasizing nonfinancial motivators rather than bonuses. A McKinsey Quarterly article.
Anne Egros's insight:

McKinsey in-depth interviews with HR directors suggest that many companies have cut remuneration costs by 15 percent or more.

Noncash motivators—praise from immediate managers, leadership attention and a chance to lead projects or task forces—are more effective motivators than the three highest-rated financial incentives: cash bonuses, increased base pay, and stock or stock options.

Many executives hesitate to challenge the traditional managerial wisdom: money is what really counts.

Why Extroverts' Brains Are Different From Introverts'

Why Extroverts' Brains Are Different From Introverts' | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
By: Tia Ghose, LiveScience Staff Writer Published: 06/13/2013 05:00 PM EDT on LiveScience Extroverts and introverts differ strongly in how their brains process rewarding experiences, new research suggests.

Via Pat Weber, Ivo Nový
Anne Egros's insight:

This study looks interesting and raises some questions:

Can we effectively link personality to brain structure and neurochemistry ?

What if you are neither a strong extrovert nor a strong introvert ?

I also think there are other factors than extrovertion/introvertion that are impacting the way people behave in various contexts and their "rewarding mechanisms"

Anne Egros's comment, June 16, 1:24 PM
To quote Carl Jung, the psychologist who coined the terms introversion and extraversion*, “there is no such things as a pure extravert or a pure introvert. Such a man would be in the lunatic asylum.”
