Bilingualism and biculturalism are related, but they are not the same thing. | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
Anne Egros's insight:

A very much needed explanation on the distinction of bilingualism and biculturalism.

For example, too often managers are chosen for their abilities to speak the local language but someone can have a better cultural sensitivity and be  more successful without speaking the local language.

It should be obvious that building and reinforcing an organizational culture takes many people, and leaders at every level play a fundamental roll.  That said, I think this article hits the nail on the head by emphasizing that culture is "something that we do" ... and not something that can be proceduralized -- it's more art and less science -- it's more indirect influence and less direct supervision -- it matters a lot but there's no shortcut to quickly creating a good culture.

High-Energy Workplaces Can Save America

High-Energy Workplaces Can Save America | Global Leaders | Scoop.it

Maybe not perfect but I found the 12 questions used by Gallup quite objective in their attempt to link engagement with productivity:

They claim that innovation, entrepreneurship, authentic sales growth, new customers, job growth — all the things that every company needs most — are sparked and inspired by the relationships between managers and employees that these 12 items measure.

I think what is important is to measure the answers before doing anything, identify with the employees maybe 2 or 3 points that impact the most their performance and measure again after changes have been implemented.

What do you think ?

Yahoo's Latest HR Disaster: Ranking Workers on a Curve

Yahoo's Latest HR Disaster: Ranking Workers on a Curve | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
Yahoo inflames employee sentiment by making managers rate workers on a forced ranking system that follows a bell curve, and then fire some of them
Anne Egros's insight:

You don't need to be a genius to understand that putting pressure on employees by forcing them to compete with each other instead of fostering collaboration will just unmotivate everyone.

I just have to watch my 12 year old son, when the teachers try to find the good in everyone, kids are happy and want to learn. When the teachers use stupid tests to evaluate and rank pupils, my son doesn't want to study even if the subject is his favorite one.

5 Signs Your Leadership Style Is Outdated
Forbes
Many leaders in the workplace have lost their competitive edge. They lack the substance that is required to be an effective and sustainable leader.
Anne Egros's insight:

Technology is spreading new ideas globally and so fast that knowledge is not anymore the advantage of leaders.

Knowledge is free but inspiring others comes with a cost: you must re-invent yourself to stay attuned with changes around you.

Never before, we have seen three generation of leaders in the same workplace. The 20-30 challenge up the 35-45 and the late baby boomers 50+ may not be able to satisfy the needs of those who are changing the world around them.

Making bad decisions? You may have become so arrogant and blinded by your past success that you don't have the humility to listen to your team members.

When is the last time you took time to think about your impact as a leader? Did you ask for feedback from bottom-up? Are you interested only in your own career advancement?

Asking questions is more powerful than giving answers, do you know how to mentor and coach others around you so they enjoy what they do and don't call it work?

Great scoop and fantastic insight Anne!  I have seen some senior leaders put in great efforts to update their leadership.  It is great to see!

donhornsby's curator insight, October 29, 2013 8:27 AM

(From the article): Leadership is all about taking risks and knowing when to take them.   If you don’t feel comfortable being uncomfortable  – courageous enough to see and seize opportunities that others don’t and do what others won’t – it is impossible to be  an effective leader.   These are the fundamentals of sustainable leadership.   So look around you and ask yourself the following question:  Has your leadership style become outdated?

Menno Molendijk's curator insight, October 30, 2013 4:30 AM

Stay in tune. With the people around you. And yourself.

I challenge the concept of "'global mindset". It is often interpreted as an "ethnocentric" ways of dong business aka "western".

Applying participating leadership and asking employees to take initiatives doesn't work well in Russia for example.

Lousy Leaders Coddle

Lousy Leaders Coddle | Global Leaders | Scoop.it
Coddling leaders are safe; compassionate leaders dangerous. Coddling, like all leadership behaviors, reflects attitudes about yourself and others. Coddling isn’t compassionate it’s needy, misguided...
Anne Egros's insight:

It is true that knowledge and experience are often on the way of creativity and therefore prevent other people to experiment and grow. We learn from our failures more than from successes.

Compassion unlike coddling encourages people to try new things and to step out of their comfort zone with confidence even if it hurts or if they get some bruises on the way.

You don't learn to bike by seeing others doing it, falling is part of the learning process and compassion is like the helmet and the protection gear to make sure you don't get permanent damages.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger-Nietzsche
