Parts of Europe know to be GMO free. When will we?

Jason Wilhelm's curator insight, February 27, 8:25 AM

The GMO debate is raging throughout the world. Many believe that these crops have many harmful effects on the human body due their their altered genetic state. Thankfully, many countries are adopting a non-GMO attitude, as illustrated in the above map, so as to prevent the many poor side-effects they have.

Whitney Souery's curator insight, May 28, 3:44 PM

This map is the epitome of agricultural geography and the beginning of a series of questions such as why did all of Europe choose to be GMO-free? Or, does the proximity of European countries have to do with the fact that they share similar values (such as being GMO-free)? What does the EU have to do with this pattern? Because the EU chooses to be GMO-free, European countries are making a statement and consequently refining agricultural markets by refusing to import certain genetically modified foods. Agricultural geography thus shares some patterns across space- with all of Europe sharing simile agricultural policies.

Global Evolution: Will we be in time?
What is happening to our planet and its ability to provide for and shelter us? Can it continue to sustain us? Or will it destroy us due to natural evolution or our interference with Mother Nature? Can we establish economic stability? Balance climate change? Eliminate toxic chemicals? Actually achieve world peace? How will we evolve and will we be in time to save ourselves or will we be destroyed by our changing planet?

Milton Glaser designs campaign to tackle climate change

Milton Glaser designs campaign to tackle climate change | Global Evolution: Will we be in time? | Scoop.it
Milton Glaser, the graphic designer behind the ubiquitous I heart NY logo, has launched a campaign to raise awareness of climate change.
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

Not every socio-geographic-political campaign can be as clever and universally loved as "I ♥ NY". But Milton Glaser, the world famous graphic designer who is responsible for the NY love phrase has come up with another doozie. This time it is in relationship to climate change which he considers more appropriately, "It's not warming, it's dying." His slogan and icon are causing quite a stir which is just what this issue needs.

This new slogan -- "It's not warming, it's dying" -- is bad in so many ways.
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:
Milton Glaser's latest geography campaign is not like the uplifting, “I ♥ NY”. It is quite the opposite. "it's not warming, it's dying" is his response to what is happening to our planet. This article also pin points the insights of some other very wise and funny people.

Pitbull mauls little boy; neighbors say it's not the dog's fault | Global Evolution: Will we be in time? | Scoop.it
He reportedly went to his neighbors' house to get his little brother and it almost cost him his life.
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

This is my comment in response to the article, "I am hearing about so many attacks on people and even other animals by pit bulls. I know of a situation recently where a pit bull was allowed off its leash and attacked a service dog. I do not know yet if the service dog will survive. THIS IS INSANE. I agree with the comment below, "You will also not prevent the dog from being what he is genetically predisposed to be." Pit bulls are killing machines. It is their nature. They should be eliminated as pets or in any situation other than to do what they instinctively do, attack and kill."

Will we be in time to stop this insanity before anyone else is maimed or killed beside this breed of dog?

How climate change makes Everest an even deadlier game

How climate change makes Everest an even deadlier game | Global Evolution: Will we be in time? | Scoop.it
After 16 Sherpas died in a horrific avalanche on Everest, a writer who climbed the peak wonders what's next for the world’s tallest mountain.
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

It is fairly well known news at this point that towards the middle of April 2014, an avalanche on Mt. Everest killed 16 guides and injured 9 others. Primarily Sherpas, these 'ice doctors' are other nationalities as well.

Although all the guides are highly esteemed and well-paid compared to others in their poverty stricken region, the loss of life does not have an acceptable price tag. This tragedy takes many issues into consideration. One of them happens to be 'climate change' and the possibility that those who have climbed parts of Everest may be the last to have been in time to do it.

Designer of ‘I [heart] NY’ creates logo for climate change

Designer of ‘I [heart] NY’ creates logo for climate change | Global Evolution: Will we be in time? | Scoop.it

Milton Glaser, the designer behind the iconic 'I ♥ NY' logo, has turned his attention to global warming, creating a logo for an awareness campaign titled 'It's not warming, it's dying'.    "There is no more significant issue on Earth than its survival," Glaser told design publication Dezeen. "The questions is, 'how can anyone not be involved?'" Speaking of the design – a disk with a black-green gradient running from North to South – Glaser said, "I can never answer the question of how ideas originate, and apparently, neither can anyone else. But, symbolically, the disappearance of light seemed to be an appropriate way to begin."

THE FIRST OF FOURTH: NEW FACES FOR FOURTH CONGRESSIONAL ELECTION

THE FIRST OF FOURTH: NEW FACES FOR FOURTH CONGRESSIONAL ELECTION | Global Evolution: Will we be in time? | Scoop.it
For the first time in twenty years,
the race for the Fourth Congressional District will not feature an incumbent’s
running.  What might November
bring
Alison D. Gilbert's insight:

I think it is important to note that this article was written by a very conservative Republican, a decent person, but someone who himself has never been able to gain a place in public office.

None the less, Frank McQuade has done the public a service by presenting a bio for each of the four running in both the Democratic and Republican primaries. Although I admit to not being a Carolyn McCarthy insider, I have heard her speak several times. She was thrown into the political arena on a one issue tragedy. She was a nurse, not a politician.

I take some offense to McQuades' comment about her. "For eighteen years, Carolyn McCarthy has been a nearly invisible, ineffective representative.  She has been a one-issue harpy on gun control, and has not even been effective in promoting legislation to address that issue.  With limited professional credentials and as a rubber-stamp for her Party’s agenda, she was never meant to be in the same league as national politics." If she was so ineffective, why was she re-elected eight times?

Anyway, as I mentioned, the writer is a Republican, as I believe McCarthy was too before switching to run for the 4th CD seat. Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens on June 24th and then in November. I think both Rice and Blakeman will be shoe-ins for the primary. The election is not so easy to predict.
