The Mekong Region has been affected by substantial flooding over the past few months. Only now, the scale of this regional disaster is beginning to come into focus, with many pieces of the puzzle still missing. The floods have had devestating impacts across the Lower Mekong Basin; hundreds are dead, crops and livelihoods destroyed, economic growth has stalled and prices have risen all around the world as a result of these events. It is estimated that almost 1.8 million people have been affected. In Thailand alone, insured losses could exceed $10 billion.

“I’M SORRY,” said the UN bureaucrat, a flush of emotion flickering across his perspiring face.The problem was the Saudi Arabians, who the previous night had threatened to block the passage of a parcel of agreements at the ongoing UN climate change summit in Durban. They were demanding an addition to it—a commitment to look into ways to compensate oil producers for the losses they would suffer if the world stopped burning fossil fuels. If this did not happen, the oil sheikhs would withhold their support from the entire package, of finance, forestry, technology and other climate-friendly measures.

Despite the best efforts of bike lane opponents and overprivileged New Yorker columnists, bike commuters in the Big Apple have increased by 102 percent since 2007, according to new figures from the New York Department of Transportation. Bicycle commuter numbers have almost quadrupled since 2001. Just imagine what it will look like when their bikeshare debuts!
