In Defense of Maria Jose Carrascosa: Rights Are No Rights Unless Protected and Defended

In Defense of Maria Jose Carrascosa: Rights Are No Rights Unless Protected and Defended | Global Economic Crisis & Corruption | Scoop.it
Why is the growing illegal incarceration of women for discriminatory reasons not accorded the same consideration as the illegal incarceration of men for discriminatory reasons by the international human rights community?
Global Expats's insight:

I first became aware of Maria Jose Carrascosa's illegal detention by the State of New Jersey in 2008, and have closely followed the horrific travesty of justice and mockery of the democratic process by New Jersey for the past 8 years. Unfortunately, the illegal detention and incarceration of victims of domestic abuse (in psychiatric facilities and penal institutions), is a growing phenomenon, as it is increasingly being used by abusers as a weapon when victims attempt to flee and escape the abuse - as has been the case with Ms. Carrascosa.

The violations of Rights by the State of New Jersey and American government, in this case, as with others like it, are appalling, inadmissible, and inexcusable - as is the silence, and inaction, of the Spanish government.

It is incomprehensible to me that the international legal community has not yet taken a very, very strenuous stand and action in this case -- as well as how it pertains to a growing trend in family courts, and courts in general.

Princeton Study: U.S. No Longer An Actual Democracy

Princeton Study: U.S. No Longer An Actual Democracy | Global Economic Crisis & Corruption | Scoop.it

"A new study from Princeton spells bad news for American democracy—namely, that it no longer exists.

Asking '[w]ho really rules?' researchers Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page argue that over the past few decades America's political system has slowly transformed from a democracy into an oligarchy, where wealthy elites wield most power.

Using data drawn from over 1,800 different policy initiatives from 1981 to 2002, the two conclude that rich, well-connected individuals on the political scene now steer the direction of the country, regardless of or even against the will of the majority of voters.

'The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy," they write, "while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence.'"

Greek bankers embroiled in corruption scandal | Europe | DW.DE | 26.01.2014

Greek bankers embroiled in corruption scandal | Europe | DW.DE | 26.01.2014 | Global Economic Crisis & Corruption | Scoop.it

The former chairman of the Hellenic Postbank stands accused of issuing dubious loans to befriended business partners under preferential terms. The bad deals are said to have cost the Greek people some 400 million euros...

...what is known so far is that state prosecutors are examining allegations that the former chairman of Hellenic Postbank, Angelos Filippidis, approved numerous loans to companies that had previously failed credit checks. As a result, Greek taxpayers are said to have been burdened with losses totaling some 400 million euros. Filippidis also stands accused of having accepted bribes for issuing his approvals.

Thirty-nine people are currently being investigated in connection with the Postbank affair. The bank was once a quasi-government financial institution owned and operated by the Greek postal service. Two former deputy directors have been arrested in Athens. Filippidis was detained in Istanbul, leading to rumors that he had squirreled away the money he allegedly received in bribes in Turkish banks. Athens prosecutors are also looking into allegations of secret accounts in Switzerland and Montenegro.

"In Filippidis' case, the issuance of loans began in 2008 and contradicted standard business practices at the Postbank, which until then, at least, had operated on a rather smaller scale," according to business analyst, Panagiotis Bousbourellis.

JPMorgan Chase to pay $2.0 bn in Madoff probe

JPMorgan Chase to pay $2.0 bn in Madoff probe | Global Economic Crisis & Corruption | Scoop.it

JPMorgan Chase, the US bank used by Bernard Madoff who masterminded the biggest fraud on record, has agreed to pay about $2.0 billion to US authorities to avoid litigation, press reports said Monday.

Madoff masterminded a massive and long-running so-called Ponzi investment fraud which came to light in 2008 as the financial crisis gathered speed.

At the time of its collapse in 2008, Madoff Securities claimed it had about $65 billion in client assets, whereas in fact it had only about $300 million.

The fraud ruined many investors and stoked public anger over the causes and consequences of the crisis.

Reports in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, citing people close to the matter, said JPMorgan Chase would announce the settlement this week.

The Wall Street Journal said: "The bulk of the fines are expected to be routed to victims of Mr. Madoff."

JPMorgan Chase, the biggest US bank by assets, was the main bank used by Madoff for more than 20 years.

Anti-Bribery Leadership Book | Blog | Firearms Industry Center

Anti-Bribery Leadership Book | Blog | Firearms Industry Center | Global Economic Crisis & Corruption | Scoop.it

Did you know that being “Compliant” and having a “Compliance Program” are two different concepts? By reading “Anti-Bribery Leadership,” written by leading authorities Tom Fox and Jon Rydberg, you will be provided with practical lessons that pertain to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the UK Bribery Act, as well as broader Anti-Corruption/Anti-Bribery standards.

Global Anti-Bribery Leadership was especially written for Board Members, CEOs, General Counsel and other corporate executives who are looking to lower their enterprise risk profile. It provides simple learning strategies from tested compliance veterans and will guide you on how to make compliance programs work for you and your organization. This is a critical resource to reinforce the practice of compliance in general and as something that should be viewed alongside Quality and Safety as an equal metric of your business’ success.  Compliance should be viewed as part of the decision-making process and should not be designed to impede efficient business operations.
