REAL Projects are designs for learning that connect deep subject content with real world problem solving.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

This is REAL learning that enables all students to be creatively engaged. This student says it all..."It is a lot better than normal lessons – you get to do things with others and for a real purpose. You work harder than normal – you are presenting and doing teamwork and interviewing. You have roles to lead others, too. And you have to deliver!"

What are the universal human rights? - Benedetta Berti | Global Citizenship | Scoop.it
The basic idea of human rights is that each one of us, no matter who we are or where we are born, is entitled to the same basic rights and freedoms. That may sound straightforward enough, but it gets incredibly complicated as soon as anyone tries to put the idea into practice. What exactly are the basic human rights? Who gets to pick them? Who enforces them—and how? Benedetta Berti explores the subtleties of human rights.

The Context of this Model is quite amazing..."The theory here is that the 21st century is characterized by access, networks, digital media, and connectivity, which immediately dates old learning models and focuses. In a progressive learning environment, students should constantly be generating original ideas from multiple sources of information–and be doing so guided by teachers, mentors and communities, all in pursuit of self-knowledge and self-created meaning and creativity."

12 Principles Of Mobile Learning

12 Principles Of Mobile Learning | Global Citizenship | Scoop.it
12 Principles Of Mobile Learning by Terry Heick Ed note: This post has been updated and republished from a 2012 post Mobile Learning is about…
Maree Whiteley's insight:

As learning practices and technology tools change, mobile learning itself will continue to evolve. For 2016, the focus is on a variety of challenges, from how learners access content to how the idea of a “curriculum” is defined. Technology like tablets PCs, apps, and access to broadband internet are lubricating the shift to mobile learning, but a truly immersive mobile learning environment goes beyond the tools for learning to the lives and communities valued by each individual learner.

It is only within these communities that the native context of each learner can be fully understood. Here, in these communities that are both local and digital, a “need to know” is born, knowledge accrues incrementally, progress resonates naturally, and a full picture of each learner as a human being fully emerges.

The Surreal Reasons Girls Are Disappearing In El Salvador

The Surreal Reasons Girls Are Disappearing In El Salvador | Global Citizenship | Scoop.it
Refuse to share a pencil, reject a boy, say no to your imprisoned dad — all of these can get a teen girl killed in El Salvador's gang war.

Via Seth Dixon
Maree Whiteley's insight:

Central America has the highest homicide rates in the Western Hemisphere, with violence being embedded into political and social institutions and norms (see this map to analyze the spatial patterns--see crime rate tabs).  Navigating this cultural status quo leads to incredibly difficult situations for young people, and especially girls, trying to gain stable employment and plan for a safe, secure future.  This is a very sobering article/podcast, with some graphic materials.  This podcast is the first in the new series,#15Girls, exploring global health issues for teenage girls. Thanks to Seth Dixon for this post...

Alex Vielman's curator insight, October 15, 2015 4:07 PM

El Salvador is yet another country where violence and crime are really high. El Salvador, as well as other countries from the Central American region suffer these crimes due to gang violence. It's very difficult living in a country where your culture or surroundings make decisions for you. Much of the country is controlled by two gangs, the MS-13 and El Barrio 18. San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, the murder rate in August 2015 was about 30 deaths a day alone.

Looking at the 'crime map,' El Salvador ranked number 2 in the world murder rank behind Honduras in 2011. For Salvadorians, it must be difficult living in a country where if you say or do the minimal wrong thing, your chases of getting murdered go up each time. This culture status makes it difficult for these young girls but it effects everyone has a whole.

Courtney Barrowman's curator insight, October 20, 2015 3:40 PM

unit 3

Kevin Nguyen's curator insight, October 21, 2015 10:38 AM

This article was very stunning and graphical to read. The rate of murder and homicide is so abnormal that it makes one question who doesn't want to leave there. I can definitely see why girls are the main targets because they are stuck in between these so called gangs because a person they know is usually affiliated with one. Their hardship of escaping was very touching and getting to experience and seeing a first hand perspective of these young girls really opened my eyes. We should not see people seeking asylum in other countries as a bad thing ,but rather sympathize for their well being that they have escaped the horrible life they had back home.
