Wired for Culture: How Language Enabled “Visual Theft,” Sparked Innovation, and Helped Us Evolve

Wired for Culture: How Language Enabled “Visual Theft,” Sparked Innovation, and Helped Us Evolve | Global Brain | Scoop.it

"Much has been said about what makes us human and what it means to be human. Language, which we’ve previously seen co-evolved with music to separate us from our primal ancestors, is not only one of the defining differentiators of our species, but also a key to our evolutionary success, responsible for the hallmarks of humanity, from art to technology to morality. So argues evolutionary biologist Mark Pagel in Wired for Culture: Origins of the Human Social Mind — a fascinating new addition to these 5 essential books on language, tracing 80,000 years of evolutionary history to explore how and why we developed a mind hard-wired for culture."

Dear Howard,

You should watch Kirby Fergusons beautiful movie series on remixing and creativity (i.e. copying, transforming & combining): Everything is a Remix. Especially part 4 is great in my opinion when he tackles the origins of copyright and intellectual property and way these got twisted over time. (http://goo.gl/DrJP7)
Howard Rheingold's comment, March 7, 2012 12:41 PM
Thanks, Paolo! Will check it out.
danijel drnić's comment, March 2, 2013 1:12 PM
I would rather use Merge-Cognate-Last form because of much deeper sense of meaning. It's hard to tell if you can copy something there is not, or transform something if it is not viable nor combining if it can't last. Again typical mistake of human kind. We just have that sense we actually coping something, rather just combine something in newer context. That is not the same ! Transforming thing is pretty SF in real manner of it's meaning, like mid-evil transforming led to gold !?? Come on we are much deeper beings. This is childish view on on.
