Fun for Spanish Teachers: 10 Cultural Games to Play in Spanish Class | Global Awareness in the High School Spanish Classroom | Scoop.it
Sarah Colangelo's insight:

While games are generally thought of as educational tools in classrooms geared toward younger learners, they can also be beneficial for students at higher levels when they are accompanied by a cultural significance. This website has 10 cultural games that reflect the traditions of Spanish-speaking children from various countries in South and Central America and Spain. These games not only promote cultural awareness, but also tie into the ACTFL national standards as students can make comparisons between the games played during their childhood in America and the games they are learning about from Latin America and Spain.

Why students need a global awareness and understanding of other cultures

Why students need a global awareness and understanding of other cultures | Global Awareness in the High School Spanish Classroom | Scoop.it
From trips to Normandy beaches to language blogs, José Picardo explores the growing importance of offering students international experiences
Sarah Colangelo's insight:

I like that this article connects the language learning experience with the importance of associating the language with the culture. The process of learning any language should incorporate culture, which in turn promotes global awareness within the classroom. According to this article, "global awareness and international collaboration during the formative years results in more rounded individuals, encouraging our pupils to see things from different perspectives and helping them to make informed decisions, acquiring transferrable skills that will be useful to them and will remain with them for life." It is in our best interest as teachers to promote global awareness to prepare our students in ways that will benefit them for years to come and promore the ideals of the lifelong learner mindset.

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: Innovative Educators Enable Students to Break Free From the Classroom and Connect with The World

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: Innovative Educators Enable Students to Break Free From the Classroom and Connect with The World | Global Awareness in the High School Spanish Classroom | Scoop.it
Sarah Colangelo's insight:

This article really highlights the importance of extending education beyond the confines of the classroom and reaching out to other people around the world to expand educational experiences. One great suggestion for a foreign language classroom is a "classroom exchange", which directly relates to the ideas in this article. In order to complete a classroom exchange, a foreign language teacher in the United States needs to connect with an English teacher in a country where the target language is spoken. Teachers then exchange instruction techniques, resources, and activities so that the students receive a culturally reflective educational experience. By promoting connections between foreign language teachers around the world, we are all working towards a more globally aware classroom.

Teaching world cultures

Teaching world cultures | Global Awareness in the High School Spanish Classroom | Scoop.it
Sarah Colangelo's insight:

Great suggestions for teaching world cultures from the University of North Carolina School of Education. Integrating culture is a necessary part of teaching Spanish and this website highlights many of the important factors to include. The underscores the importance of emphasizing similarities as well as differences, not letting one tradition define and entire culture, pointint out the diversity within a region or culture, teaching culture across the curriculum, and teaching diversity within the United States. In terms of studying hispanic culture, studying hispanic diversity within the United States can help to spread global awareness and explain why people from various countries immigrate to the United States.

Think Global | Promoting education for a just and sustainable world | Global Awareness in the High School Spanish Classroom | Scoop.it
Think Global is an education charity that promotes global learning. We work to ensure that people in the UK learn about global issues and develop an open-minded, global outlook.
Sarah Colangelo's insight:

This British report highlights the importance of global awareness in the success and futures of our students.Referencing an article like this for your students could prove to be extremely beneficial to help them understand the benefits of being globally aware in our increasingly global society. This report does a good job pointing out possible reasons why today's students are not globally aware. For example, the report suggests that the focus on test scores takes away from the importance of being culturally savvy. The focus of teachers should be to prepare students for the world ahead of them, therefore global awareness should receive just as much importance as test preparation and this report does an excellent job of isolating statistics, providing case studies, and promoting this crucial 21st century skill.

Welcome to Skype in the classroom | Skype Education

Welcome to Skype in the classroom | Skype Education | Global Awareness in the High School Spanish Classroom | Scoop.it

Skype in the classroom is a free community to help teachers everywhere use Skype to help their students learn. It’s a place for teachers to connect with each other, find partner classes and share inspiration. This is a global initiative that was created in response to the growing number of teachers using Skype in their classrooms.

Via AnneSpiegel
Sarah Colangelo's insight:

Integrating Skype into the classroom is a great way to promote global awareness and bring culture into the classroom. By connecting with teachers in other countries, language teachers can participate in a "classroom exchange" where they exchange ideas and resources typically used in their classroom as a way of exposing the students to the classroom routines of an English class in a foreign country. Establishing this connection can open new doors for students and maybe even give them a partner to practice their speaking via Skype. By establishing this connection with another class abroad, foreign language students can directly connect to the educational experiences of students their age in another country to gain an insight into culture.
