INSPIRE CONFERENCE 2012

INSPIRE CONFERENCE 2012 | GIS, Spatial modelling & Plants | Scoop.it

The INSPIRE 2012 Conference will take place in Istanbul Congress Center, from the 23rd - 27th June 2012. The events will start with pre-conference workshops and tutorials, following by Conference plenary and parallel sessions on the 25th - 27th June. A call for abstracts will be published in January 2012.

INSPIRE is a program of European Union, based on the INSPIRE Directive, establishing an infrastructure for spatial information in Europe to support Community environmental policies, and policies or activities which may have an impact on the environment.

INSPIRE is based on the infrastructures for spatial information established and operated by the 27 Member States of the European Union. The Directive addresses 34 spatial data themes needed for environmental applications, with key components specified through technical implementing rules. This makes INSPIRE a unique example of a legislative “regional” approach.

With the recent deadline of November 2011 for Member States to provide discovery and view services according to the INSPIRE Regulation on Network Services, a first release of the INSPIRE Geoportal was published. The INSPIRE geoportal provides the means to search for spatial data sets and spatial data services, and subject to access restrictions, to view spatial data sets from the EU Member States within the framework of the INSPIRE Directive.

A step closer to mapping the Earth in 3D

A step closer to mapping the Earth in 3D | GIS, Spatial modelling & Plants | Scoop.it

Space Daily: A step closer to mapping the Earth in 3D.

After a year in service, the German Earth observation satellite TanDEM-X, together with its twin satellite, TerraSAR-X, have completely mapped the entire land surface of Earth for the first time. The data is being used to create the world's first single-source, high-precision, 3D digital elevation model of Earth. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) controls both radar satellites, generates the elevation model and is responsible for the scientific use of TanDEM-X data.

Amazing map offers an inventory of all the trees in the US - Geek

Amazing map offers an inventory of all the trees in the US - Geek | GIS, Spatial modelling & Plants | Scoop.it

By Ray Walters: The map pictured above shows the incredible amount of work put in over a six-year period by Josef Kellndorfer and Wayne Walker of the Woods Hole Research Center to create a visualization of the remaining forests in the United States. The pair of researchers saw a need to visualize to the country exactly how much of the natural resource we have left. From the data collected, Robert Simmon built the map with help from U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Geological Survey.
