Satellite mapping to update forest cover data in JK - GreaterKashmir.com | GIS, Spatial modelling & Plants | Scoop.it

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will conduct satellite mapping to ascertain the exact ground impact of afforestation projects implemented across the State during past two decades. The Government intends to demarcate the total area under green cover and initiate preventive measures to save it from further encroachments.

Forest officials will be trained about the usage of the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and other technical equipment, which will be used in state wide survey. The recorded forest area of Jammu and Kashmir is 20,230 square km, but only 54 % of total area reported for land utilization is covered by forests.

The main threat are forest fires, which could increase with climate change and global warming and cause further environmental degradation across the region.
