Sunflower Foundation's insight:

Brilliant concept, but it seems to ignore tmany the communitis that need it most don't have the resources for it. The plus side is that if developing countries are investing in education infrastructure that this model offers some options. But it presupposes electricity to each co munity centre at the very least.

Sunflower Foundation's insight:

Over 55% of primary age children denied an education because of poverty, war, violence are girls. When these causes are combined, the girls are susceptible to rape and violent abuse.

Malala's story shows the difference one person can make.  You too can make a difference by supporting organisations like The Sunflower Foundation (Australia) Inc. ( of which I am president) or Half the Sky or other organisations which advocate for girls' education. We are the worst funded though education has a huge economic impact.

Excellent idea. Not just for kiddies either. But it does presuppose computers and IT resources, which aren't necessarily available in developing countries. That is the filter I apply as our Foundation funds girls' education in those communities.

Sunflower Foundation's insight:

A helpful diagrammatic summary, though I would have thought system inputs would be lower down. Without well trained teachers etc, how is that rocket going to fire? But I haven't explored this in detail so I assume there is a reason for placing it higher up.

Building Resiliency in Girls: Strength vs. Stressors

Building Resiliency in Girls: Strength vs. Stressors | Girl's Education | Scoop.it
The Laurel School (Ohio) emphasizes accessing resources that help girls cope in challenging situations: creativity, growth mindset, self-care, purpose, and relationships, the key components of resilience.

Via Linda Alexander
Sunflower Foundation's insight:

These skills can be as important as book learning. One of the things our Foundation has learnt is the way that lack of such skills is tied to lack of an education.

Linda Alexander's curator insight, June 16, 2013 10:14 AM

This is one of the VERY best articles written on this topic in a long time. Dr. Lisa Damour, The Center on Research for Girls at Laurel School, provides evidence-based research and real life examples on the topic of resiliency. (Most of the research applies to to boys as well).  Dr. Damour connects resiliency to the research on creative play at Case Western Reserve University.  She also shares the importance of encouraging a growth versus fixed mindset and personal care among other key elements.

Yemeni girl from YouTube wants education, not marriage
CNN
Sanaa, Yemen (CNN) -- A young Yemeni girl stares defiantly into the camera. Her question is a shocking one, coming from an 11-year-old: "Would it make you happy to marry me off?
Sunflower Foundation's insight:

This is a very powerful video. initially an amateur video was posted then CNN became involved as this little girl's story was challenged by her parents. What is painfully clear is that she wants an education and access to educational resources and she is prepared to fight for them as best she can. From one perspective, we might define many cultures that marry barley teen girls to older men as institutionalised pedophelia. From another, we can applaud the Yemini reference of her case to mediation before a women's rights advocate who brokers a resolution that keeps her with her family but in a larger town with access to educational resources.

Common sense confirmed. Yet accessible report on the benefits of an urban context across the globe. Though I know from our Australian context that urban students in poorer areas do not necessarily have access to the 'wealth of cultural resources' a city offers. I expect this is multiplied in contexts like India where girls often cannot go to school let alone to exposed to the cultural treasures tourists flock to see.
