How a Digital First reporter should approach statehouse coverage

How a Digital First reporter should approach statehouse coverage | Giornalismo Digitale | Scoop.it

THE BUTTRY DIARY: An editor asked me to outline how a Digital First statehouse reporter should work.

I see nine themes for the digital emphasis of a statehouse reporter:

Live reporting of events.

Community engagement around the issues and events of the Capitol.

Reporting breaking news and enterprised scoops as the stories unfold.

Curation of content from other sources.

Enterprise and daily reporting based on analysis of data compiled by state agencies.

Video reporting of interviews and news events.

Mapping.

Digitally focused enterprise reporting.

Beatblogging.

I’ll elaborate on them, but need to acknowledge up front that I’m not involved directly with statehouse coverage now, so some statehouse editors and reporters could certainly explain any or all of these points better than I could. This continues the discussion I started last month with a post on the workflow of a Digital First journalist.

We are All Journalists: The Future of Reporting and the Role of Media | Giornalismo Digitale | Scoop.it

Development Digital Development Debates - Innovation - Transparency:

The most shocking images of 2011 were shot with a mobile phone: one of the world's most feared dictators, mutilated and helpless in the hands of his people. Those closest to the action now have the ability to capture the moment on a simple phone and publish it immediately, without having to wait for a camera team to arrive or a media channel for distribution. Therefore, digital technologies, social media and mobile phones in particular, are changing the way media is produced, disseminated and consumed. They narrow the gap between producer and consumer, author and reader, representative and represented...

Newspaper shares plunged 27% in 2011

Newspaper shares plunged 27% in 2011 | Giornalismo Digitale | Scoop.it

In a year when the stock market flailed mightily to end up almost exactly where it started, the shares of the publicly traded newspaper companies plummeted an average of 27% in 2011.

Of the 11 publicly held newspaper companies, the stock of only one – the broadly diversified News Corp. – gained ground in the last 12 months. The stock of the publishing-cum-broadcasting company rose 10.7% in 2011 despite the phone-hacking scandal that resulted in the closing of the News of the World and led to questions about Rupert Murdoch's stewardship of the business and the arrests of a more than a dozen former editors and reporters.

The shares of all the rest of the newspaper publishers, as detailed below (click to enlarge image), fell by double-digit rates, ranging from an 11.4% drop at Gannett to a 71.3% plunge at Lee Enterprises, the latter of which averted a potential default by refinancing its debt in the final weeks of the year...http://newsosaur.blogspot.com/2012/01/newspaper-shares-plunged-27-in-2011.html

MediaShift . The 5 Tenets of Open Journalism | PBS

MediaShift . The 5 Tenets of Open Journalism | PBS | Giornalismo Digitale | Scoop.it

by Melanie Sill, December 30, 2011...Open journalism should be up for debate, like any idea, but it's built squarely on some of the traditional journalism values we're so quick to protect. "Open journalism" just gives it a name and now, a better roadmap for two-way journalism in the digital era (see the five tenets below).

My open journalism idea sees journalism as acts that provide service in the larger context of Internet-era communication. It recognizes that communities gain from skilled and expert journalism (there never has been enough) and that such work has the best hope of success through robust connections to sources, citizens and other contributors in a networked information universe.

Public affairs journalism, especially the time-consuming work of investigative reporting and accountability coverage that relies on accumulated knowledge and expertise, is indeed a public good and must be responsive to those it serves. Those who provide it need to build trust as well as tangible support such as digital subscriptions, e-book payments, organizational alliances, donations or philanthropic grants. In 2012 and beyond, in the communication age that has blossomed post-Internet, such support involves not blind faith but open and active connection...http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2011/12/the-5-tenets-of-open-journalism364.html

Five New Year’s Resolutions For Newsrooms - 10,000 Words

Five New Year’s Resolutions For Newsrooms - 10,000 Words | Giornalismo Digitale | Scoop.it

Ah, the new year. A time for promising to do new things and reflecting on what you failed to achieve in the past year. For the ever-evolving news industry, it’s a fresh opportunity to assess what’s working and what’s not, and a reason to get others around you to try something new (not always the easiest thing to accomplish in the newsroom).

These are five resolutions, ranging from relatively simple to somewhat radical, that you can use as a source of inspiration for your own newsroom.

1. Cut back on paper usage. 2. Fully document your projects 3. Strive for a culture of open news 4. Seriously rethink how you present news on the web 5. Forget taxonomies and find a better way of connecting content ...http://www.mediabistro.com/10000words/five-new-years-resolutions-for-newsrooms_b9610

Tumblr Is Launching Its Own Journalism Operation

Tumblr Is Launching Its Own Journalism Operation | Giornalismo Digitale | Scoop.it

If history is any guide, tech companies should absolutely not try and become media companies. But the 25-year-old CEO of precious New York blog platform Tumblr has the fearlessness of youth. Which is why he's recruiting his own writer and editor types.

"There's now an editorial team forming that will help promote stories people write and share on Tumblr too," writes Business Insider, paraphrasing Tumblr CEO David Karp. "[Karp] proudly shared that 30 of Tumblr's blogs have turned into book deals."

It's not clear what exactly these Tumblr journalists are working toward, or how much they're getting paid, if they're getting paid at all. The company already has at least a handful of journalists curating Tumblr's well-trafficked tag pages, but it's not inconceivable that the microblogging network could eventually launch its own blog to curate the best posts from its network, or hire a dedicated promotions staff to nurture more book deals and media coverage.

Rather than wasting time with writers, Tumblr should be spending on algorithms and software features, if you judge by the ill fortunes of past tech/media hybrids like AOL + Time Warner, Yahoo and, well, AOL + Huffington Post...http://gawker.com/5873439/tumblr-is-launching-its-own-journalism-operation

Can newspapers also be tech incubators? - GigaOm

Can newspapers also be tech incubators? - GigaOm | Giornalismo Digitale | Scoop.it

We’ve written before about the need for newspapers to be “digital first” and to think like startups as they try to adapt to the evolution of the media industry. Can a traditional newspaper take an even bigger step and actually help give birth to new technologies or services by acting like a startup incubator? At least two of them are planning to give it a try: the Philadelphia News Network just launched an incubator, and Digital First Media recently launched a venture-capital arm and says it plans to invest in tech startups. While both of these efforts could easily fail, at least these two media entities aren’t just sitting back and relying on paywalls to save them...http://gigaom.com/2012/01/05/can-newspapers-also-be-tech-incubators/

This may be the year where newspapers finally drop the idea of treating all news as a product, and all readers as customers.
One early sign of this shift was the 2010 launch of paywalls for the London Times and Sunday Times.

Digital First journalism blog posts (in a print format)

Digital First journalism blog posts (in a print format) | Giornalismo Digitale | Scoop.it

I have compiled all of my recent series on Digital First journalism as a pdf.

Yeah, it’s a little odd to present Digital First content in a format so people can print it. But I already acknowledged that the purpose of the series was to help people through a transition from print to digital. If you prefer print, here it is. I did this for my Blueprint for the Complete Community Connection and Mobile-First Strategy blog posts, and was surprised at how many people read the pdfs.

If you prefer to read them online, and missed any of them because of the holidays:

Top trends to watch in 2012 - Editors Weblog

by Federica Cherubini and Emma Heald: 2011 was a big year for news in more ways than one. Reporters were amply tested in their coverage of big breaking news stories such as the death of Osama Bin Laden or Muammar Gaddafi, major disasters such as the Fukushima earthquake, and complex political unrest much of the Arab World.

Meanwhile, newspapers continue to seek an effective digital business model, to tackle the challenges posed by social media and community involvement, to create innovative tablet applications and respond to ethical dilemmas. Looking forward to 2012, what can we expect?...http://www.editorsweblog.org/analysis/2012/01/toop.php
