HTC says smartphone cameras with optical zoom to rival DSLRs soon

HTC says smartphone cameras with optical zoom to rival DSLRs soon | smartphone photography | Scoop.it
HTC famously dropped out of the megapixel race last year to focus on better performance with smaller sensors. Now, it's predicting quality and technology improvements that will render DSLRs obsolete.
Ezra Rushen's insight:

HTC are making bold but potentially exciting claims that they will offer optical zoom lenses in their smartphones within 18 months. Lenses on smartphones has always been their major let down. For me the pixel race has been a red herring. Quality optical zoom lenses and wide/macro/telephoto is where the industry needs to and now seems to be heading.  For those of us who turn to their smartphone camera for great shots when the DSLR isn't around this exciting news.

Ezra Rushen's insight:

Is there still magic in an instant photo print?

Launching in Autumn this year, will everyone be bying one of Polaroid's Socialmatic Cameras? Is this the camera to breath life back into the analogue photograh? If you check out the video you can see that the instant photograph it produces is either very small or the camera is a monster pocket buster but my question is what are the photos for? In the 70's the technology was new and fun. The magic was in seeing the photo in front of us in seconds not days or weeks later which was the alternative. In the digital photography era we have instant access to our photos but this time viewable on high quality smartphone screens, bursting with contrast and vivid colours. A far supperior experience. We can also have high quality prints made affordably and receive them next day. I want to be excited about Socialmatic but struggling, at the moment, to find a way.
