Jimmy Winfrey, the man who shot up Lil Wayne's tour bus last April, has been sentenced. It looks like the case involving Lil Wayne's tour bus shooting has finally come to a conclusion, while the legal drama between Wayne and Birdman (at times, intertwined with this case), continues to lag on. Today ...
Russell Simmons is an innovator (that’s for sure). Here are some of the highlights from his interview with HipHopDx. This was a very insightful view of what happen during RUSH CARD GATE…
Russell Simmons on his apology about the outage…
“I know how hard people work to get money. I know how damaging it could be if people were not able to get to their money… I’m deeply sorry. I don’t know what else to do about it but try to make good on it and try to make the people that were damaged whole. That’s all I can do.”
Russell created an industry that other ignored….
The pre-paid debit card industry didn’t exist until Simmons identified an opportunity to give people squeezed out of the banking system access to modern financial services. Since its inception in 2003, the company has been levied with claims that it exploits impoverished communities. Here, Uncle Rush clears the confusion.
Russell on what motivated him to create the card….
When we created the card, when people got their checks they went to the check cashing place. They paid more then, at that moment, than they paid in our whole monthly fee to cash their check. Then they got in a line and spent an average of eight to 12 hours just paying their bills. Now with the card and access to the American economic system because you need plastic, they can pay their bills online. It gave people dignity and access.
Russell on creating innovations in the credit industry to help people have better access….
.I want people to pay their rent regularly to be able to get credit for that to improve their credit. It’s been a long fight for me to be able to make FICO and other credit people accept that if somebody pays their rent for eight years then they should be able to pay their mortgage. If somebody pays their phone bill without service past due, it should be added to their credit so they can be able to buy a car. These things other innovation have to get done
Russell on leaving his legacy in this area…
I want to be the best in this business. I invented it. If people say that I’m the Godfather of Hip Hop or put poetry on the stage or everything I did for comedy or that I put a reverend on TV after the Osbournes, I guess that’s kind of creative. It ain’t have nothing to do with inventing an industry. I didn’t invent rap. I just worked for it. I didn’t invent poetry. I just worked for it. I invented this industry that MasterCard and Visa and Carlyle Group and Bank Of America—I invented this industry.
You know it’s funny that when someone succeeds where others called something a bad idea, at times there are those who spend more time on “looking right as opposed to being right..” Many in the banking industry and consumer groups pounced on the opportunity to highlight what was wrong with the RushCard as oppose to seeing what was right. Russell Simmons is on the right side of this issue and to his critics it sound at times like sour grapes. The financial industry is tough. Matching that with technology could be any companies’ nightmare but it seems that not only will the Rush Card survive this incident, at the end of this they will be a better and more improved product.
Okay here the stats on the week’s top3 on the GetAtMe HotNewHits….
Drake JUMPMAN- (74.0 Score B grade) this new Drake cut is all street cred, radio is still in the intro phase (Urban radio is still on HOTLINE BLING). It had good scores in all 5 score segment with its top score in the mix segment (18pts) and the industry segment (16 pts) meaning that this one’s a dj and industry favorite….
Missy Elliot’s WTF- (62.2 score B- grade) Missy’s new cut is hot and having Pharrell don’t hurt. Dj’s are gonna love this cut (and radio). This cut highest scores came in the mix segment (15.2 pts) and the industry segment (15.0 pts)
BeatMakanixxx/EmpireCast BOOM BOOM BOOM remix- (53.7 score C grade) This cut is from the Empire show and we liked it so much we had to do the remix (this is a really hot cut…). It scored highest in the mix segment (well it is a dj record, 15.7 pts) and in the Track segment a (13.0). Since this is a specialty Dj mix it’s gonna be just out there in the market for right now. With the visibility of the show Empire although it could creep up on us and hit…
The music industry is a dreamers nightmare. I mean so many people come into it without really having a real grasp as to the business structure in the business. It doesn't help that so many people have so many different views of their truths when it comes to the business of music. Someone's lie might be anothers truth (the only real trurh that matters are the sales numbers...). Tonight we differentiate the difference of getting money vs doing business (sometime getting money gets in the way( #frfr) of the actual business that has to be done). Call in for the discussion 347 826-7734. We also spotlight Drake's JUMPMAN, Missy's WTF and The BeatMaKanixxx remix of the Empire Cast new single BOOM BOOM BOOM. See you tonight and #GetAtMe
The music business is a very results driven industry (contrary to some beliefs others may have) and quite frankly, you don't see a demand for many RNB male or female groups because their primary audience don't spend enough money to support the genre ( #RealFansBuy). The labels have become a business of "Rent To Own" fame that's usually driven by some executives ego choices as opposed to supplying market demand. The executives feel that if they just keep spending promotions money then acts will catch (that doesn't work). The audience that purchases hiphop online can be limited and the RNB fans just are to limited in their support in the online marketplace. Believe me if fans started spending that $1.29 then you would see a lot of RNB male and female acts (as is the case of The Weeknd, a hugely successful new artist who built his fanbase from online supporters). Sometimes the labels boost up their sales figures to justify their "vanity spends" and that also leave the impression that fans are more receptive consumers that they really are. So the answer is if more RNB fans spent the $1.29, you will see more RNB artist (#ItsOnlyADollar). At the end of the day it is show BUSINESS. #GetAtMe

Ms Badu has a new cut and its hot (#DjAlert). As usual this lady has made a cut that not only rides but it’s thought provoking. Erykah Badu has a haughtingly sexy tone that oozes out of the speakers and hypnotizes her listeners.
*This one is gonna navigates through the streets and the cars are gonna love it.. #ForTheRealBaduFans.
*Mixtapes are also gonna love this cut for their RNB mixes…
*The clubs will like this cut for their happy hours. This cut was made for the hookah bars…
*if radio takes to this cut it will be a smash but the competition will be stiff and radio is gonna wait and see what the other market segments do (streets, online and clubs).
This cut is hot so you real Badu soldiers need to bring it home.
I love it when I find new and emerging talent. In this instance I found 2. 1st off MarQ Dean who seems to be intending on developing into a PopHipHouse sound. But on this new cut LINGERE he also shows a smooth and sultry side to his music (#FRFR). This LINGERE is a certified #PD (yall know what I mean #PantyDropper). This is a sexy song. Also this new online and youtube sensation William Singe and his sexy remix of FLEX (#TrulyOriginal). This 2 songs came together to give me a great slow jam blend. Enjoy and
This new GetAtMe InDaMixxx ft Nelly THE FIX and more. This is a nice blend of some of todays to RNB/Hip cuts. Nelly, Marvin Gaye, Rick Ross, Tinanshe and Christina Milian are featured on this mix. Enjoy and
