Anyone who has read my blog knows how I feel about boosting numbers for hype (I don’t like the practice because the real pros know when it’s being done…) I mean if it was a strategy that works then I would maybe see the function but usually fans know when the numbers aren’t real (fans know hits…)
Online has created an over whelming supply of new music and the demand part continues to dwindle so when fans see online trickery with the numbers, they just ignore the new music. Now music online marketers are not going to tell you this because they are trying to sell their wares (all marketers believe they are rainmakers, it’s part of their koolade and in a way it’s what drives them…) but the real is with so much of a supply in music (and accessibility), fans already have an idea of their new music choices way before the so called gatekeepers give their verdict (that’s why the iheartMemphis, Zay Hilfigurr or Young M.a. blow up, folks just really like the song…) So boosting numbers is really most of the time just a ploy to boost the artist’s ego and a strategy to make the artist’s friends feel like the artist is really doing something and not just spinning their wheels and wasting time and money.
It’s the New Year and as we always say,”the truth is in the sales numbers.” The Migos BAD & BOUGIE starts the year off at num 1 (these sales came out of nowhere, #hmmm …). Rae Sremmurd BLACK BEATLES ( a real strong cut…) falls to num 2. Drake FAKE LOVE is num 3 (another strong contender…) The WeekNd STARBOY is still holding strong and so is DRAM BROCCOLI.John Legend is back on the chart with LOVE ME NOW and Rihanna LOVE ON THE BRAIN is slowly moving up the chart. Amine CAROLINE (this cut is amazing because the sales are so strong. This is clearly a west coast thing…) and The WeekNd 2nd cut on the chart I FEEL IT COMING is at num 9. Big Sean BOUNCE BACK (getatme handicapped) comes in at num 10.
It’s the new year and happy New Year to all. Remember “there’s nothing wrong with the record business that a good record can’t cure…”
It’s the new year and we’re starting the year off with a banging NuMusicMixxx ft Chris Brown DAT NIGHT ft Trey Songz & Young Thug (This new Chris brown is loaded to win…) Here’s the stats
Chris Brown ft Trey Songz & Young Thug DAT NIGHT (22.7 pts/40 pts) grade C+ This cut here is a smoker. It’s loaded to win… #DatNight
DC Don Juan YOUR GIRLFRIEND 16.2pts/40pts) grade C- This one is a remix of Kap G’s GIRLFRIEND (when they start remixing it, that’s the first clue that you may have one…) DC Don Juan makes a very dj friendly track so it will get some attention but will it be enough for interest?… #GirlFriend
Polow Da Don WET ft Bando Jones & Saint Laron (17.5pts/40pts) grade C This one definitely could be a creeper (this is a good cut). Bando Jonez just has a great voice for this kind of cut. Product push will determine this cuts fate (it won’t happen without the right push…) #Wet
Mack Benton TRIPPIN (16.7pts/40pts) grade C This cut scored high for this street indie but this dude Mack Benton is the truth. This cut is a ballad but Mack’s voice still carries this cut even in a dance mix form. Good things are coming for this artist (female demos are gonna love this cat when he kicks in #frfr). #Trippin
Tory Lanez SLOW GRIND (18.2pts/40pts) grade C This cut was made for the strip clubs and could very well be Tory Lanez next hit. Dj’s are gonna like this cut so the sales will tell the story… #SlowGrind
Wiz Khalifa BOMBAY & LEMONADE ft Juicy J & Chevy Woods This one premiered on Worldstar and trended. The Dj’s will eventually feel this cut cause it mixes well and it’s just a great club cut (it seems like someone is waiting for that sponsor money to come in on the promotions #lsmh)… #BombayAndLemonade
Marq Dean FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (13.8pts/40pts) grade D This is a great mixtape cut as Marq Dean provides us with this dance interlude cut. Marq Dean is primed to do this hiphouse movement… #FriendsWithBenefits
Soulja Boy KISS ME THRU THE PHONE ft Sammy (13.1pts/40pts) grade D Soulja Boy has a good cut with this cut (even though it 7 years old). It seems like they are trying to prime it to be another challenge cut ( #KissMeThruThePhoneChallenge) The dancer will like this one… #KissMeThruThePhone
Dae Dae SPEND IT (remix) ft Young Thug & Young M.a. (22.4pts/40pts) grade C This remix of the Dae Dae hit now loaded with trending starpower. Young Thug and Young M.a. bring a whole different energy to this cut… #Spend It
That’s this edition of the GetAtMe NuMusicMix ft Chris Brown DAT NIGHT. Remember “there’s nothing wrong with the record business that a good record can’t cure…”
With The passing of the Great performer George Michael, GetAtMe had to do a tribute mix and we were fortunate to find the great live perfiormance of I CANT MAKE YOU LOVE ME performed by Michael. We gave it a driving beat #4DaDjNU and it turned out to be one of my favortie mixes I've done. I hope (for the George Michael fans and others...) that this mix will become a favorite of theirs also. #GetAtMe
This is why Vine is so important to today’s music scene. Since Twitter made the decision to keep the platform Vine up (a really good decision seeing as that Vine is Twitter’s video engagement tool…), people in the music side of online music sales are pleased, why? Because no other online video platform drove sales and actual music engagement like Vine (DoItForTheVine…). The 6 second videos are the real challenge and viral video jumper cables, and with that announcement the kids went right back to creating viral music videos and challenges.
Why does the 6 seconds work so well, because the limited time you have in the video make the video’s producer focus on the viral ling impact moment and when it works it’s gold. Twitter made a great decision to keep Vine up and immediantly the iTunes sale jumped right back up. Twitter, thank you for making the right call… #DoItForTheVine
Ok here’s this week’s GetAtMe Urban Airplay Report. Drake’s FAKE LOVE stays at the top of spin increases in urban radio. Here’s the stats:
Drake FAKE LOVE stays as the top cut with spin increases in urban radio this week (as a matter of fact it raised in spin increases…) Sitting at num 8 on iTunes with a cume audience of 22,615 million listeners, FAKE LOVE is that top trend in urban radio right now…#TopCut
Migos BAD & BOUGIE The Migos have a cut that making mad moves in BAD & BOUGIE as it come in at num 2 with over 400+ spins. It sit at num 18 on iTunes (real sales…) and has a cume audience of 9.8 million… #OnItsWay
Future USED TO THIS USED TO THIS dropped from num 2 last week but it stays in the top 5. It had moderate sales gains on iTunes as it moved into the top 200 at 198 (last week was at num 281…) Its cume audience is at 9.3 million listeners… #HoldingOn
Lil Uzi Vert YOU WAS RIGHT jumped on the chart at num 4 with over 300+ spins and it sits at num 101 on iTunes. Its cume audience is at 15.3 million (that a lot of radio for this cut…)… #WellSee
Anime CAROLINE This cut is staying strong (the west coast is really representing on this cut. It had over 300+ spins and its sitting at num 11 on iTunes (strong online sales are keeping this cut in the game…)…#TheSalesAreReal
That’s this week’s GetAtMe Urban Airplay Scorecard. Remember “there’s nothing wrong with the record business that a good record can’t cure…”
J Cole is on a whole nuther level (I don’t think anyone can argue that…). This dude never fails to shine when he steps and into the hiphop spotlight and never fails to deliver an engaging dialogue. When J Cole adds commentary to the hiphop conversation then the conversation becomes a better discussion. “ONE DAY EVERYBODY GOTTA DIE” is one of those cuts that adds to hiphop conversation (and boy, he held back “nuthin” #IfUListenThenUWillHear). Here’s the stats:
TRACK- 4.3pts (out of 5pts) J Cole always picks tracks that are perfect frames to what he has to say. This track is no exception. Its basic beat with the jazzy keyboard feel delivers the right mood for this discussion. Not over bearing but hot enough to put you in a I need to listen mode… #ThisTrackIsHot
PERFORMANCE- 5.0pts J’s lyrics and rap are all on point on this one. What’s crazy about J Cole’s music is the timeliness of his tracks to the conversation of hiphop. He has a knack of saying what need to be said when it needs to be said. Is J Cole becoming HipHop’s Gil Scot Heron?... #ItNeededToBeSaid
MUSCLE 3.8pts I’m not sure that the muscle on this track was put in place because it seems that J is taking shots at some current hiphop stars and calling them out (“I’mJustSayin”). The streets and online are gonna love this cut but that will be the core hiphop enthusiast. That it trended with “J Cole takes shots at Lil Yachty” is my point (when he really said “all the Lil’s…#lsmh)… “I hate these rappers, especially the immature 8 weak rappers…” #TheHeat
JUICE 2.9pts This ones gonna be strange because I feel like this is just a hiphop checkin by J Cole. So this isn’t a club joint and if radio gets behind this cut, I’ll really be surprised (but if radio does, then this thing is gonna be a smash… #Shazam)
HITFACTOR 2.2pts The buzz on this cut is crazy (based on the Lil Yachty trend online…) but it has no sales yet so this just might be an early HITFACTOR score, but right now its 2.2pts because of the none itunes sales (and that could very well change this week). Let’s hope the hiphop dialogue that is being generated by this current TREND turns into sales… #ItsAboutSales
TOTAL 18.2pts (out if 25pts grade B) I love this cut and like I said, this may just be a little early but the B grade has come from the buzz already generating on this cut (now can the buzz turn into sales…?). Check out J Cole ‘ONE DAY EVERYBODY GOTTA DIE’… #ItsInTheMix
Remember “There’s nothing wrong with the record business that a good record can’t cure”
What do Drake, The WeekNd and J Cole all have in common? It is the support of HopHop’s most influential person. The 18-25 year old female demo. In an industry where everyone wants to know the real movers and shakers in music, well here she is and here’s why she is so impactive.
Her and her friends are online’s most important influencers from the point of trends, music, fashion, clubs and even sports at times. Why because everyone likes having her and her friends around and not only do they spend (real money…) but they influence other to spend (come on do you see folks going in the club to spend $300.00 on a bottle of liquor with a bottle boy?) They are loyal consumer soldiers and to slight them can be a career changing mistake for some artist.
They are loyal to the lifestyle (as exhibited on daily post on Baller Alert & The ShadeRoom IG sites and they have opinions that they want heard. Their loudest opinion although is with their credit and debit cards as they vote on who will live or die in the music coliseum called sales on a daily basis on iTunes. They are the driving factors in Rae Sremmurd’s Black Beatles and The Migos Bad and Bougie. They love Big Sean and Gucci is the ‘Unc’ who could get it (or if nothing else they’ll kick it and have drinks…)
So if you want to meet the music industry’s and hiphop’s most influential person, well here she is. Respect her and her buying power. She has proven that she carries weight in the echoes of her decisions. $1.29 is not hurting her pockets and if she’s feeling you as an artist, she will display her support by buying.
Remember, “there’s nothing wrong with the record business that a good record can’t cure…”
Man everytime I make a mix it’s like cooking a meal. This tribute mix for George Michael was more than just a mix for me but it also a tribute to 2 of the best Dj’s I’ve ever known, Stuart Gardner and Daz Wright. Anyone who knows anything about the Atlanta Dj community knows that these 2 guys were real dj legends. Not industry dudes looking for a come up but 2 guys who just loved the music. George Michael was a very pivotal artist for these guys when they were spinning and Michael’s passing just brought these two guys back to mind. Really great djs.
On this mix I did a BeatMakanixxx mix of the Bonnie Rait classic I CANT MAKE YOU LOVE ME (I was so lucky to find a live performance by Michael and truly a performance that showcases George Michael’s real talent. George Michael may have been an industry pushed artist but this dude’s talent was for real. I wanted to show that in my DjSingleMixxx. I also mixed in some classic FATHER FIGURE, CARELESS WHISPER and I WANT YOUR SEX, all songs that were a reflection of the time when George Michael was hot (The pretty people era #lsmh).
This was a touching mix and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed doing it. Remember “there’s nothing wrong with the record business that a good record can’t cure…”
“I feel so unsure As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor As the music dies, something in your eyes Calls to mind the silver screen And all its sad good-byes…”
Man you know 2016 have been hard on the music fans. This year we have lost such huge legends and it just a reminder that the hands of time just keep on moving. George Michael, to put it simply, was blessed with chemistry and time finally has called him home.
George Michael was truly a part of the music machine that developed and drove artist to fame. With his model looks and narrative singing tone, George Michael truly lived his life like a “Careless Whisper” (this dude was blessed…). Millions of female fans fell in love with this pop icon at the height of the Miami Vice movement, it was the pretty people era from New York, Paris, LA and Miami. George Michael was the poster boy for the pretty people. Even when it became apparent that Michael lived in an alternate lifestyle, his fans embraced the music over the gossip. His fans loved him.
With well lyrically crafted songs and very emotional performances, George Michael was the truth. Noone can really say that when this artist emerged in the group Wham, that we were witnessing the birth of a pop icon. His music will live through the ages.
“I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm Though it's easy to pretend I know your not a fool
Should've known better than to cheat a friend And waste the chance that I've been given So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you
Mr Michael, thank you for your music, your craft and your memories. Remember “there’s nothing wrong with the record business that a good record can’t cure…”
