You know artist at times seem to have a special connection to the universe (I think it’s the whole muse thing or something…), so it seems at times when they makes certain statements, that it’s almost seems prophetic. Prince had no shortages of these moments.
When Prince was on the Jay Leno show once, he took a question and gave Jay his views on a record deal that was given to one of his peers, Mariah Carey. He interred that he felt like the labels should be in a 50/50 arrangement with artist. This would have been a cool arrangement if the artist were putting up 50% of the investment for manufacturing and promotions (which most artists couldn’t and wouldn’t do at the time...). The labels usually were the ones taking the fiduciary risk so they were the ones who were getting the long end of the stick (either when a project won or lost…). It seems that Prince found out about this reality in later years as he put out his own projects independently and came to the realization of the power of Warner Brothers promotions machine ( #RentToOwnFame…). Little did he know that years later a judge and technology would make his proposed idea a reality ( http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/09/07/itunes-songs-arent-purchased-but-licensed-court-rules/ I bet your hotshot entertainment lawyer didn’t tell you that #lsmh, don’t worry most of them aren’t even aware of the ruling per se).
Check out the article at the above link, I’m sure you as an artist will find that to be interesting reading. Prince called it and so it was…
Ok on this GetAtMeInDaMixxx 0018 COME ON OVER, we did like a quiet storm groove mix with some of today top cuts. Here’s the stats:
Kent Jones DONT MIND 98.6 is a hot new cut that moving up quickly (the “you be telling me this break is hot…”). Its momentum carried it straight to the top with a score of 98.6 pts (out of 100 pts)… #ItsAHit grade A+
Drake CONTROLLA 95.2 is a street and dj favorite. Urban radio mixshows are really on this cut and the streets are buzzin… #DjAlert grade A+
Rihanna NEEDED ME 93.2 is following right behind WORK. This cut is carrying such a strong female demo… #TheladiesAnthem grade A
DVSN DEEP 65.7Drake’s supergroup is still buzzin online and DEEP is a strong mixtape cut RNB/HipHop… #HeresAnotherOne grade B
PartyNextDoor COME ON OVER 61.1 This dude has some great music. If his itunes account ever moves then he’s gone… #OnDaVerge grade B-
Rayven Justice BETWEEN YOUR THIGHS 55.6Rayven Justice was an online find but this song is for real… #GoldenOpportunity grade C+
Big Bank Black 4LIFE 51.6 I have always liked this rapper (he is the truth) from when I first heard him on a cut MISSING with Future. His story telling and lyrics are above par for a trap rapper. He has legit pen skills. This cut shows that (he writes like it’s in a trap diary… #GottaHear grade C
Marq Dean FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS 45.1Marq Dean is making moves with HipHouse but made this track for the mixtape crowd to show his versatility. This sexy phone sex track is different… #FWB grade C
Labels release music every week vying forthe attention of djs (supposedly the first response influencers). Rarely although do the labels realize that different djs play for different crowds and their influence is predicted on their crowds taste. So why release a product that your influencer cant influence? Well usually that because label releases are sometimes ego power struggles and noone at the label wants to be wrong and always want to be right. tonight we deal with the label djs relationship. Also tonight we have a PRINCE tribute mix. That's this weeks GetAtMe HotNewHits
With the sudden passing of the music legend Prince, I think it caught all of us who are fans off guard, so it took me a moment for me to feel right about doing this mix tribute (because I’m truly a fan and I wanted to make sure I did the mix I was really feeling…). This was a real personal mix for me and if at any time “ItsAboutTheMusic” it’s now with the passing of this musical icon.
On this mix we have a live performance of I WANNA BE YOUR LOVER (man this crowd was all in on this track, classic PRINCE). Then we blend into the PRINCE classic I WILL DIE FOR YOU (this dance mix really reminds us of the reach this cat had worldwide). Of course we had to blend in WHEN DOVES CRY (one of my personal favorites) and then we bring in a dance mix of GET OFF (this mix had crazy energy...).
PRINCE was a true artist and this mix is a quick glimpse into the musical genius of PRINCE for his fans. PRINCE will be missed but his music will last forever…
If you haven’t seen The Breakfast Club interview with Trick Daddy, I don’t know what you’re waiting on. The Breakfast Club is known for classic controversial current and trending interviews on radio. These interviews are most of the time entertaining. But this Trick Daddy interview is FRFR classic.
Trick Daddy is known for speaking his mind and on this interview he gave it all to us (this is one of the few interviews where Charlamagne just sat back and listened). You can’t pay for an interviews like this. This interview is a radio morning show’s dream. This is how you wake folks up. Trick kept em talking all day with this interview. It was the raw, no cut. But that’s Trick Daddy.
Check out this interview and Imma tell you, this is how you get invited back because this was a great radio moment. As a matter of fact, he barely spoke on the current music (he’s gonna let the music speak for itself). Trick came on The Breakfast Club and made it a real barbershop conversation. You’re gonna love this. “I don’t smoke the loud, I smoke the quiet…” classic Trick Daddy.
There’s a saying “that a picture say a 1000 words”, well this video says volumes. Rihanna has always established that she’s gonna be true to her roots and this video is just an extension of that. But FRFR folks Rihanna is on her way to a movie and this video looks like nothing less than a demo reel for movie producers and booking agents (Rihanna wants to be in Bad Boy 4 on the for real tip…). Its seems that Rihanna has decided what’s next for her (no matter what someone else thinks. It’s clear their time is about over #IWonderWho).
SONG- This song is hot and the video compliments it well… 4.6 pts
PRODUCTION- This production is top notch (as expected by Rihanna). The dark club setting sets the island tone (sort of like SPRING BREAKERS meets SCARFACE…) 4.5 PTS
STORY- This theme worked well. This video looked like a coming attractions clip (which really works)… 3.8pts
TIMING- Dropping this right on the heels of the WORK single and other trending online gossip issues is either great planning or just dumb luck. Either way it works… 3.7 pts
HITFACTOR- Come on its Rihanna, it’s hard for her to miss…. 4.7pts
TOTAL- 21.3 pts (out of 25 pts) grade A This ones gonna work. This video will start a conversation in the streets but the dj’s and fans are gonna deliver this cut,
Okay on this GetAtMe3PcSnack we introduce a new series called OnDaVerge where we spotlight new and upcoming artist and songs. A lot of times I hear great cut but I know some of these artist don’t have the industry momentum to position themselves for a win. So we decided to create a series dedicated to these new artists. Here’s the stats:
Rayven Justice BETWEEN YOUR THIGHS 96bpms- First off you know this hook is hot and it may come off well with female buyers. This is a great track from Rayven Justice and this could easily become a dj record. This sexy hook and track has a great upside… Score 51.6 grade C (This one might be a sleeper… #DjAlert BeatMakanixxx Mixxx)
T-Pain LOOK AT ME 80bpms - Man this thing here has some energy. T-Pain always delivers on the tracks and has delivered on this one. This cut is great cut to mix (should Chris Brown have done this song?). Djs and T-Pain fans are gonna feel this one… Score 63.5 grade B (Dj’s will have to deliver this one…)
Marq Dean- FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS 76bpms- This is an album cut from Marq Dean (the sexy phone call…). This is a mixtape ride cut (strong cut, BeatMakanixxx Mixxx). Marq Dean is making moves and building his brand and fanbase ( iammarqdean.com )… Score 41.9 grade C- (this is a great ride cut and has that backblend feel that works for streaming cuts.)
Desiigner is #1 on Billboard (who would have seen that coming? Who? GetAtMe…). That’s right #1. Do you know why? Because the sales are legit. Here’s what’s special about this accomplishment. Desiigner’s PANDA survived the Prince tsunami (sales motivated by Princes death. 52 cuts in the itunes top 100. Over half of the top itunes 100) and the Beyonce firestorm (mostly motivated by streams from Tidal. How does anyone really believe a listen (that is what a stream is) is the same as someone reaching in their pocket and spending money I’ll never know? That’s like beating a video game with the cheat book. “look yall I won… #lsmh). This song has proven to be as impactive as the Bobby Shmurda’s cut HOT N*GGAS (maybe it’s a Jersey thang…).
Real #1’s gets the real trophies. Congrates to Pusha T and Desiigner. “panda, panda, panda…”
Here’s the problem with celebrity exposure. It opens you up for anyone (who wants to…) to say anything and supposedly you’re just supposed to make money and ignore them. Well Baby has had enough (especially if he feels you making a mockery of his name is putting bread in your pocket. You getting points off him but he can’t get any points off you… #ItDontWorkThatWay). So Birdman sat down with Hot97NY (Ebro and Laura) and set some things straight… #GreatInterview
Birdman comes off not just intelligent, but unapologetically street intelligent (which seems to be a problem to certain parts of urban culture. Usually the ones, who want to charge you to sound intelligent for you or worse, want to charge you to make you sound intelligent. Some real W.E. Dubois sh*t…) and Birdman makes it clear he is gonna be Birdman.
When you’re successful the rumors can be crazy (many time by disgruntled or unsatisfied people involved in a situation…). Birdman brought up a real valid point in this interview, He’s a gambler (which is something that the professional intelligencia hates or at best just don’t understand). Birdman being a gambler really feels (as most gamblers do), if you don’t put up no dough, you can’t make no bread (a real gamblers creed…). To cats like Birdman you gotta hunt to eat at the big table (a lot folks have a hard time with this value perspective…). I’ve never heard an artist tell the label “I’ll pay you back the money you lost developing me…” Usually they just complain if it wins and they feel like they came up short. Birdman probably just ignores people who feel entitled because he had to go take his and expect them to follow suit.
Okay here’s this week’s GetAtMe Urban Airplay Scorecard.
Drakes ONE DANCE is tops in spin increases this week (451) and is sitting at num 7 with on itunes (it seems like Drake and Rihanna just trade num1s…) #UrbanRadio
Desiigner PANDA talk about the little train that could, this cut just keeps on doing its thing (in spite of the haters…). It picked up 397 spins and stays at num 10 ( also in spite of the Prince and Beyonce onslaught…#ThatsCrazy) #ItsAHit
Twenty88 ON THE WAY comes in at num3. Big Sean and Jhene Aiko came together to make this nice track. With 309 spins increases, this cut could be a hit when its sales kick in… #DjAlert
S-Eighty HALFWAY is the surprise of the week (this is a nice cut). Youtube views are driving this cut along with a Lil Wayne remix. It picked up 263 spins but hasn’t showed up in the itunes 200 yet (those views have to convert into sales…) #CheckItOut
Rihanna NEEDED ME is a beast (come on its Rihanna…). With its great video and street buzz (the ladies love this cut…), it picks up 216 spins and is sitting at num 28 on itunes (Rihanna keeps em coming) #BadGirlRiRi
That’s this week’s GetAtMe Urban Airplay Scorecard.
Rihanna is the epitome of the “bad girl in control” (that’s sorta what makes her sexy…) and these lyrics from her new single NEEDED ME exemplifies this. She said volumes in these bars.
“Don’t get it twisted, you were just another n*gga on a hitlist, trying to fix the issues of a bad b*tch. Didn’t they tell you I was a savage...?” (#LSMH, unapologetically bad…). It seems that Rihanna want to clearly let it be known, that no one owns her and she’s never gonna be the victim and all who wish to be (or already is) involved need to remember that… #Lovett
GetAtMeMiniMixxx ft Rayven Justice Between Her Thighs and Marq Dean FWB.These new tracks are from 2 up and coming artist ON DA VERGE from GetAtMe. Rayven Justice delivers the aexy soulful track and Marq Dean has a FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS discussion. 2 great beats, 2 great cuts. #GetAtMe#ItsAboutTheMusic DJ MIXES HIP HOP/RnB Hip Hop
