A Social Network Analysis Comparison of an Experienced and a Novice Instructor in Online Teaching

By Patricia Fidalgo & Joan Thormann

Abstract:

The most productive learning experience for students whether online or in face-to-face classes can often be the interaction among students and with an instructor. Online teaching and Social Network Analysis (SNA) offer the opportunity to examine intellectual social networking and strategies that promotes student interaction which can enhance learning.
This study focuses on two online courses in which we used Social Network Analysis (SNA) techniques to evaluate and compare student and instructor interactions of two online courses (Lesley University, Cambridge, MA and Instituto Piaget, Lisbon, Portugal). One course was taught by an experienced online instructor and the other by an instructor new to the online teaching format.
We describe and present some of the main features of SNA such as degree of participation, density of interaction, linkage, formation of subsets, distribution of centrality among the participants as well as network patterns.
Although the countries and content of the courses were different, SNA allowed us to make comparisons using objective statistical methods. We found that the instructional approach has a clear effect on interactions. In addition, we noted that under some instructional circumstances a multi-star pattern of interaction was created which is an undocumented SNA pattern. We also observed that SNA can be useful in studying online course interactions leading to enhanced learning.

第一类是引起学生注意:1.吸引我; 2.激励我。

第二类是告诉学生:3.告诉我; 4.给我看。

第三类是让学生自己行动:5.让我来;6.支持我;7.让我做的更好;8.让我产生价值。

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy

The Maker Movement and the Rebirth of Constructionism - Hybrid Pedagogy | Gestión de conocimiento | Scoop.it
The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.

Evolution of knowledge representation and retrieval techniques

Malhotra, M., & Nair, T. R. G. (2015). Evolution of knowledge representation and retrieval techniques. I.J. Intelligent Systems and Applications, (07), 18-28. doi:10.5815/ijisa.2015.07.0

----

Abstract— Existing knowledge systems incorporate knowledge retrieval techniques that represent knowledge as rules, facts or a hierarchical classification of objects. Knowledge representation techniques govern validity and precision of knowledge retrieved. There is a vital need to bring intelligence as part of knowledge retrieval techniques to improve existing knowledge systems. Researchers have been putting tremendous efforts to develop knowledge-based system that can support functionalities of the human brain. The intention of this paper is to provide a reference for further research into the field of knowledge representation to provide improved techniques for knowledge retrieval. This review paper attempts to provide a broad overview of early knowledge representation and retrieval techniques along with discussion on prime challenges and issues faced by those systems. Also, state-of-the-art technique is discussed to gather advantages and the constraints leading to further research work. Finally, an emerging knowledge system that deals with constraints of existing knowledge systems and incorporates intelligence at nodes, as well as links, is proposed.

Making Learning Meaningful: 6 Priorities For Whole Learning

Making Learning Meaningful: 6 Priorities For Whole Learning | Gestión de conocimiento | Scoop.it

"We recently discovered the Bay Area’s Prospect Sierra School’s interesting learning model that prioritizes 6 ideas for learning in the 21st century. There is, of course, no single “best” way to pursue “21st century learning”–nor any learning at all for that matter. But seeing the way other inspired educators pursue the idea can teach each one of us a lot. In this model, we appreciate the inclusion of self-knowledge, as well as moving past the idea of content to true disciplinary knowledge–seeing knowledge in context and application."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 26, 2014 9:22 PM

This post shares another visual that provides one model of learning in the 21st century. Specifically, it prioritizes six ideas:

* Disciplinary Knowledge - "Build and apply content knowledge to think deeply and act as a practitioner of the discipline"

* Self-Knowledge - "Experiment and create, while embracing failure as an opportunity for growth in order to design new ideas and solutions."

* Innovation Creation - "Recognize one’s emotional, physical, and learning needs, strengths, and challenges to nurture personal growth and resilience"

* Collaboration - "Share knowledge and resources, building on a diversity of ideas and experiences to achieve group goals and interdependence"

* Responsibility - "Understand one’s impact and influence in a local and global community; cultivate compassion, and take positive action"

* Communication - "Express ideas effectively through varied means of presentation; understand one’s audiences, actively listen; and build connection"

Additional information on each of these six ideas is included in the post.
