Graph of the Day: How green is your country? : Renew Economy

Graph of the Day: How green is your country? : Renew Economy | Geothermal | Scoop.it
A map of the world's renewable energy sources reveals some surprising green colouring. But not is all as it seems.

Via Rogerio P Assis
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

As the article says the sub-Saharan region's apparent green-ness can be discounted given their reliance on biomass. Meanwhile the UK is a disappointing little black blob, showing up the crawling pace of the nation's energy policy.

Rogerio P Assis's curator insight, August 19, 2013 5:36 PM

"... Of the major economies, Scandinavian countries, New Zealand,  and Brazil have the brightest shade of green thanks to their considerable hydro resources. Most other European countries hover between 10 and 30 per cent renewables, and hydro also helps China into a lighter shade of green, while economies such as the US and Australia are credited with no more than 10 per cent and Russia and the oil-rich Middle East are a sea of black.

(Australian is right on the margin of 10 per cent, having been basically unchanged for the last decade, although rooftop solar and some new wind farms has probably pushed that to around 12 per cent now. This graph relates to 2011). ..."

Very interesting graph.

Caroline Lucas among dozens arrested in Balcombe anti-fracking protest

Caroline Lucas among dozens arrested in Balcombe anti-fracking protest | Geothermal | Scoop.it
UK's only Green party MP is arrested along with dozens of anti-fracking protesters in a 'day of action' across the UK
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

"Demonstrators hung banners at the country home of the Conservative Lord Howells, who stirred controversy by suggesting the "desolate" north should be fracked, and attempted to put up a small wind turbine at the home of Tory MP Francis Maude, whose constituency includes Balcombe."

Even the vandalism that took place during these peaceful protests was good for the environment. Perhaps David Cameron is fated to walk out of his door at Downing Street one day to look in amazement upon glistening lengths of solar panels coruscating upon every wall and roof in sight, erected silently in the night by balaclava-clad green energy lovers in an act of indignant practicality. By the time Cameron sees them he's already used the solar electricity to boil his kettle and is implicated. The perfect crime.

P.S. 10 Downing Street is already fairly sustainable though it doesn't have solar panels, and you can even see its energy usage here: http://www.carbonculture.net/orgs/number10/10-downing-street/

Lord Sugar calls for green energy target - FT.com

Lord Sugar calls for green energy target - FT.com | Geothermal | Scoop.it
Lord Sugar has called on the government to insert a 2030 target for green electricity into the energy bill to end the “prolonged uncertainty” surrounding companies and investors in the energy sector.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

Sir Alan Sugar seems to think British renewables have become embroiled in British politics. Who would like to see the Amstrad founder (and Dr. Who guest star) speak at a Green Power Conferences event one day?

2013 Global 100: The Definitive Corporate Sustainability Benchmark

2013 Global 100: The Definitive Corporate Sustainability Benchmark | Geothermal | Scoop.it
The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World is an annual project initiated by Corporate Knights, the magazine for clean capitalism.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

Here are the world leaders in clean capitalism - including geothermal loading services provider Atlas Copco.

You can click around the handy interactive map to view an alphabetical list of the most sustainable corporations in each region.

Europe dominates the list followed by North America, though I was pleasantly surprised to see my old mobile services provider from when I lived in Singapore, Starhub, on the list as well. There's also Capitaland, develoeprs of many of Singapore's grandest and fanciest malls and condos, including some of our old haunts and rendezvous spots. The corporation is also showing significant interest in green building projects across Asia.

Intermittent Nature of Green Power Is Challenge for Utilities

Intermittent Nature of Green Power Is Challenge for Utilities | Geothermal | Scoop.it
When a Vermont wind farm was required to cut back generation, the episode prompted a larger debate about the alternative energy’s place in the nation’s power supply.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

Intermittent, they say - and geothermal isn't mentioned once! The Intermittent Nature of Wind and Solar, people, Wind and Solar. You stand atop an impressively consistent and reliable source of energy, the heat from the very Earth itself.

Goes to show, we need more exposure for geothermal energy when speaking of renewables, rather than geothermal being the quiet good guy stood behind his flashier associates.

The city of Springhill, Nova Scotia in Canada has received permission for a project that plans to utilize water in old coal mine systems for geothermal heating.
Jonathan Geothermal's insight:

An interesting example of old conventional energy systems being adapted with geothermal technology to reduce a city's carbon footprint in the future.
