Shears sez: Very good question! Geoff Duncan writes: Google Maps is starting to see some high-profile defections.
Shears sez: Definitely worth a download! "Spotzi is a genuine World Atlas for your iPhone and iPad and shows you the world in a unique and astonishing way. It not only shows you street maps and high detail areal maps (provided by Esri). That’s just a starter. Spotzi goes beyond any political border and zooms in to any aspect of our planet. This has been made possible by the extent data resources at NASA, the World Bank and our own data warehouse."
Shears sez: Definitely need to pick this one up. This project is the grandfather of both GIS and epidemiology. "What an ill Victorian infant has to do with the power of maps and the future of modern cities."
Shears sez: Wow! Public domain historical maps out the wazoo, in high resolution and FREE! "The largest online collection of large maps. The BIG Map Blog is updated daily and maps are free to download in high resolution."
Shears sez: That is a truly fascinating map, partially because of its symbology scheme. Makes a lot of sense, and makesthe flows very visible! "More people left Phoenix in 2009 than came. The map above visualizes moves to and from Phoenix; counties that took more migrants than they sent are linked with red lines. Counties that sent more migrants than they took are linked with blue lines."
Shears sez: Nothing wrong with a little travel in your underwear. "Google Sightseeing has recently created a great tour of the volcano, showing off some of its most amazing features like the lava flow (KML) seen below."
Shears sez: I remember when this stuff first started coming out, my dissertation adviser (Jim Tyner) immediately asked 'what if the Khmer Rouge or the Hutus had this kind of technology?' Chilling thought, isn't it? "The gadgets we marvel at can be used on us, not just by us."
Shears sez: Now this is the way to really enjoy geospatial research! (via @meg_stewart) "I spent November 3-6 starting to collect data on Mayreau, the smallest inhabited island in the Grenadines with a population of ~300. Most of the locals live in the village with the surrounding lands used for subsistence farming, however in the past decade almost all of that land has been sold by the government and a few islanders to resort developers from Canada and England."
Shears sez: Even avowed technophiles like me have to worry sometimes about stuff like this.... "There are certain jobs where making the same mistakes can cost companies billions of dollars, and sometimes costs people their lives."
"Traffic congestion on NH-8 — the only high-speed link between Delhi and Jaipur — may be a thing of the past".... thanks to Google Earth!
History in These Streets is a virtual recreation of the Black Panther Legacy tour that the Huey P. Newton Foundation conducts in West Oakland. The tour includes an audio narration by David Hilliard, the former Chief of Staff of the Black Panther Party. As Hilliard relates the history of different locations the Street View of that location is displayed, with a little help from the Google Maps API.
Apple and Google have had a tumultuous relationship in the mobile landscape. When the iPhone was launched, Google was a partner from day one. Their map data, YouTube archive and default ...

"NOAA-USGS airborne lidar survey of post-storm topography was completed August 28, 2011 along the North Carolina coast to detect coastal change resulting from Hurricane Irene. Comparisons of the post-storm elevation data to lidar data collected in 2009 are used to characterize the nature, magnitude, and spatial variability of hurricane-induced coastal changes, such as beach erosion, overwash deposition, and island breaching."
"Vacation to Mars: Antarctica's Dry Valleys
Most of Antarctica has about 2 1/2 miles of ice covering it, and that cold, white wasteland is what most people picture when they think of our south pole."
Shears sez: Awesome idea. EduContribution.org hooks up GIS students who need projects with non-profits who need work done. Yes!
Shears sez: SAVE GPS!!!!! "At stake are the delicate satellite signals that power the $110 billion GPS market for military and commercial aviation navigation systems, automated agricultural machines and consumer mapping services in cars, to name a few."
"Places I've Pooped is a little gem that helps you track all the places you've pooped in the world. Expand your territory, mark everywhere you've visited - bombs away!"
Shears sez: It's actually been a debate for the past 50 years or so, especially amongst cartographers, whether such work on the moon is geography or not. Does geography imply a necessary earth-based component? I'd argue no. "Astronomers at Arizona State University have used Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to build this jaw-dropping map of the Moon. It's the highest-resolution, near-global topographic image of our lunar neighbour yet."
Shears sez: Now this is WAYYYY TOO FRICKING COOL!!!! "Time lapse sequences of photographs taken with a special low-light 4K-camera by the crew of expedition 28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October, 2011."
Shears sez: Nice! A mashup for deals using FourSquare. Don't worry, we won't tell anyone that a user of FourSquare almost has to have a pricey smartphone data package. Shhh! (via @GeoPDX) "Poorsquare: This app lets you find local restaurant freebie offerings and BXGX (Buy Something Get Something) Free promotions in your area...."
The advent of another GIS Day provides a good opportunity to reflect upon the value of GIS. GIS is used, according to some estimates, by 1.5 million people each day, and by over 400,000 organizations.
Flood Map shows the map of the area which could get flooded if the water level rises to a particular elevation. Still in work in progress, but in essence this is a GIS layer showing which ares are at risk for flooding. You can set the elevation level to monitor where the threat is greatest and where in will infrequently occur as well.
