This article offers a snapshot of where ed tech stands now and where it is likely to go in the next five years, according to 56 education and technology experts from 22 countries.

The overall of the topic is divided at three different moments. first, we encounter the trends in educatioon among which we can find deeper learning, rethinking learning and collaboration, it means that these  aspects have started to be included in every-day lesson, and educators have been concerned about it more often than before, but when could it be done?

The building principal's leadership affects the entire staff.  Stress and the inability to control emotions can undermine the culture of the building and interfere with student learning. The pressure of leading a school, especially a struggling school, can easily overwhelm a principal.  Finding time for reflection can be the first step to building self-awareness.  It is important to build the attributes of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, empathy, relationship management, and effective communication.  A leader must work at all these aspects in order to be highly effective.

Ten Disciplines of a Learner
We decided to continue the conversation on this topic at a faculty meeting. Several meetings later we had a new report card. We decided to give two grades and average them—one for “Learning,” the other for “Mastery.”

Sara might get an “F” in mastery and an “A” in learning, culminating in a “C” for the course. To be rigorous we picked ten observable behaviors and named them “Disciplines of a Learner:”

1.     Asks questions

2.     Builds on other people’s ideas

3.     Uses mistakes as learning opportunities

4.     Takes criticism constructively

5.     Speaks up

6.     Welcomes a challenge

7.     Takes risks

8.     Listens with an openness to change

9.     Perseveres in tasks

10.   Decides when to lead and when to follow.

I fully support the idea that giving the learner voice and choice over what is learned is the strongest way to promote knowledge and understanding. This type of learning/educational interaction places the student in the driver’s seat of responsibility and places the instructor as just one more critical resource whom analyzes needs along with the student, designs an education plan that aligns and addresses individual strengths and weakness in the educational design, then facilitates that plan and assesses success.

Great teachers empower their students to engage with the content.  These classrooms can often appear noisy as students discuss and argue, get excited and share.  Our traditional teacher observation and evaluation instruments undermine real great teachers. These instruments often focus on what the TEACHER IS DOING not on what the students are doing. Administrators are often looking for teachers who are directing the learning, standing in the front of an orderly classroom talking and asking questions. Teachers who are on the side, guiding and facilitating are often marked down because administrators do not observe the behaviors of the checklist.  We need to change the way teachers are observed - and the feedback they receive - from the administrators that determine their contracts.  We need to find ways to encourage our REAL GREAT TEACHERS.

Suspends Judgment – Silences the Inner Critic


The ability to hold off on judging or critiquing an idea is important in the process of creativity. Often great ideas start as crazy ones – if critique is applied too early the idea will be killed and never developed into something useful and useable. (note – this doesn’t mean there is never a time for critique or judgement in the creative process – it’s actually key – but there is a time and place for it). (http://www.problogger.net/archives/2007/05/09/9-attitudes-of-highly-creative-people/)

Many new ideas, because they are new and unfamiliar, seem strange, odd, bizarre, even repulsive. Only later do they become “obviously” great. Other ideas, in their original incarnations, are indeed weird, but they lead to practical, beautiful, elegant things. Thus, it is important for the creative thinker to be able to suspend judgment when new ideas are arriving, to have an optimistic attitude toward ideas in general.

Tolerates Ambiguity

Ambiguity tolerance may be… the “willingness to accept a state of affairs capable of alternate interpretations, or of alternate outcomes,” (English & English 1958). From the article:  "Mindsets are simply defined as 'the ideas and attitudes with which a person approaches a situation.' Mindsets imply that mental and attitudinal states can assist one in being successful with a given skill set. I believe this to be true for engaging in the creative process, that a creative mindset is a prerequisite to being creative."  Of particular interest to brainstormers.

Creatives are simultaneously essential and aggravating.  You know who you are, you are the person at the board table asking why?  No one wants to answer you so they pass you over.  But that is one of the strongest attributes of a creative mind:  why?  Why have we always done it this way? Why are we promoting our products this way?  Why are we meeting?

Ask one why question a day - just to keep limber.
