Flotilla of tiny satellites will photograph the entire Earth every day

Flotilla of tiny satellites will photograph the entire Earth every day | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
On 14 February, earth scientists and ecologists received a Valentine's Day gift from the San Francisco, California-based company Planet, which launched 88 shoebox-sized satellites on a single Indian rocket. They joined dozens already in orbit, bringing the constellation of "Doves," as these tiny imaging satellites are known, to 144. Six months from now, once the Doves have settled into their prescribed orbits, the company says it will have reached its primary goal: being able to image every point on Earth's landmass at intervals of 24 hours or less, at resolutions as high as 3.7 meters—good enough to single out large trees. It's not the resolution that's so impressive, though. It's getting a whole Earth selfie every day.

It took less than a minute of satellite time to catch these thieves red-handed | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
The heart of the Pacific Ocean is a vast, barely explored region outside national boundaries, teeming with undiscovered species and dramatic undersea terrain. A few organizations monitor activity here, mostly international fisheries management groups, but it's easy for a vessel to get lost in the enormous distances. That's exactly what many pirate fishing fleets depend on.

Maps API Content Schedule

Maps API Content Schedule | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
We have been ‘churnin and burnin‘ here at DigitalGlobe Maps API, and our partner Mapbox has also been putting in some long hours and huge automation routines to publish our Recent Imagery content updates to Maps API!

Curating a huge 90PB + imagery stack into a 2PB ‘skin’ of the earth is no easy task.  But we love this stuff.

It’s also difficult to convene the coverage of these imagery basemaps in an email on in our developer documentation. So, we have created up-to-date coverage maps for our imagery basemaps which also detail our snapshot update schedules.

The Brilliant Drone That’ll Deliver Medicine, Then Rot Away | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
WHEN MOST PEOPLE hear the word “drone” they either think of uncrewed military aircraft or those multi-rotor mini-copters that could one day deliver packages to your doorstep. But what if the package is the plane? That’s the idea behind the Aerial Platform Supporting Autonomous Resupply Actions drone, a cardboard glider that carries about two pounds of cargo.

A Practical Guide to Machine Learning: Understand, Differentiate, and Apply

A Practical Guide to Machine Learning: Understand, Differentiate, and Apply | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
Machine Learning represents the new frontier in analytics, and is the answer of how many companies can capitalize on the data opportunity. Machine Learning was first defined by Arthur Samuel in 1959 as a “Field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.” Said another way, this is the automation of analytics, so that it can be applied at scale. What is highly manual today (think about an analyst combing thousand line spreadsheets), becomes automatic tomorrow (an easy button) through technology. If Machine Learning was first defined in 1959, why is this now the time to seize the opportunity? It’s the economics.

NASA Earth Science Data: Yours to Use, Fully and Without Restrictions | Earthdata

NASA Earth Science Data: Yours to Use, Fully and Without Restrictions | Earthdata | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
NASA data and data products exist for the purpose of furthering scientific research. In fact, a primary charge of NASA is ensuring that all data produced by NASA, including the code and algorithms used to produce these data, are available fully and openly to data users. This full and open data policy also ensures that there is no period of exclusive use of these data or access to these data, and that they are made available as soon as practical following the launch of a satellite or the start of a mission. NASA has been a leading advocate for providing full and open access to data and algorithms since the 1990s.
