EDRS launch successful; first space data highway laser relay in orbit - GeoBuiz Channel

EDRS launch successful; first space data highway laser relay in orbit - GeoBuiz Channel | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it

"EDRS launch successful; first space data highway laser relay in orbit:

- ESA launched its first laser node of the European Data Relay System    on Jan 29;

- The first node, EDRS-A, was launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan        atop a Proton rocket on at 22:20 GMT;

- EDRS-A was launched as a hosted payload on Eutelsat-9B, a               commercial telecom satellite operated by Eutelsat;

- The laser terminal has reached space aboard its host satellite and is      now under way to its final operating position;

- The satellite was released at 07:32 GMT on Jan 30, around 36 000      km over the equator;

- It will take its final geostationary position at 9°E over Europe, where it   will be operated by Eutelsat;

- EDRS is a public–private partnership between ESA and Airbus             Defence and Space;
- Dubbed the ‘SpaceDataHighway’, EDRS will uniquely provide near-       realtime Big Data relay services using cutting-edge laser technology;
- It will dramatically improve access to time-critical data, aiding disaster   response by emergency services and maritime surveillance."

NOVA IMS's USGIF GEOINT Certification

NOVA IMS's USGIF GEOINT Certification | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it

"The Geospatial Intelligence Certificate, accredited by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) provides education and training in scientific concepts, methods and key geospatial technologies, used in the solution of global problems of human security, including natural disasters, humanitarian crisis, environmental risks, military operations, political violence, public health and challenges in access to food.

USGIF’s purpose is to promote the geospatial intelligence tradecraft and to develop a stronger community of interest between government, industry, academia, professional organizations and individuals. USGIF is the only organization providing Higher Education accreditation in the GEOINT domain, being a world leader in this field.

In order to obtain the GEOINT Certificate, students will have to:

- Be enrolled in the following course units: Geographic Information Systems and Science, Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT), GIS Applications, GIS Modelling, Remote Sensing;

- Enroll in other elective course units to complete the remaining 22,5 ECTS;

- Deliver a Scientific Thesis/Work Project/Internship Report, in Geospatial Intelligence."

Space technologies could solve global challenges | The Parliament Magazine

Space technologies could solve global challenges | The Parliament Magazine | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
As long ago as ancient Greece, Plato wrote "astronomy compels the soul to look upward, and leads us from this world to another." More recently, science fiction - whether in literature, comics, TV or films - has inspired generations to become involved in space programmes. For Dutch astronaut André Kuipers, it was the German science fiction series; 'Perry Rhodan' that grabbed his imagination.

"When I was twelve years old, my grandmother gave me some science fiction books from the famous Perry Rhodan series. I couldn't stop reading them. From that moment on, my dream was to become an astronaut."

Kuipers is a member of a select group of Europeans who have been fortunate enough to travel to space.

Neo4j Spatial

Neo4j Spatial | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it

Neo4j Spatial v0.12-neo4j-2.0.0

"Neo4j Spatial is a library of utilities for Neo4j that facilitate the enabling of spatial operations on data. In particular you can add spatial indexes to already located data, and perform spatial operations on the data like searching for data within specified regions or within a specified distance of a point of interest. In addition classes are provided to expose the data to GeoTools and thereby to GeoTools-enabled applications like GeoServer and uDig.

The key features include:

- Utilities for importing from ESRI Shapefile as well as Open Street Map files

- Support for all the common geometry types: Point, LineString, Polygon, etc.

- An RTree index for fast searches on geometries

- Support for topology operations during the search (contains, within, intersects, covers, disjoint, etc.)

- The possibility to enable spatial operations on any graph of data, regardless of the way the spatial data is stored, as long as an adapter is provided to map from the graph to the geometries.

- Ability to split a single layer or dataset into multiple sub-layers or views with pre-configured filters"

So the GEOINT Revolution is in play. Disaggregating the multiple technologies that enable this revolution reveals remarkable change—and churn—as everything from situational awareness to launch to on-orbit operations is being disrupted. It’s an exciting time, with tremendous intellectual energy, capital investment and technology development all operating in a swirl of big promises and even bigger expectations. Wherever this GEOINT Revolution is headed, the remote-sensing renaissance will be integral to the journey and shaping the destination.

Neo4j Graph Database: Unlock the Value of Data Relationships

Neo4j Graph Database: Unlock the Value of Data Relationships | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
Your Enterprise is Driven by Connections

Your Data Should Do the Same
Today's world is no longer driven by data – it's driven by the connections between them.

Big data alone used to be enough, but enterprise leaders need more than just volumes of information to make bottom-line decisions. You need real-time insights into how data is related.

Data relationships drive today's intelligent applications, and you need a database that harnesses those connections for sustainable competitive advantage. That solution is a graph database.

Graphs – i.e., networks – are the most efficient and intuitive way of working with data, mimicking the interconnectedness of ideas in the human mind. Neo4j is built from the ground up to harness the power of graphs for real-time, bottom-line insights.

Discover the competitive advantage of using a graph database
