A picture is worth a thousand words...what a wonderful class opener for disparity, effects of urban expansion, child poverty...the list is endless UNFORTUNATELY!

A striking look at where children from nine countries sleep at night.

Urbanization and Megacities: Jakarta

"This case study examines the challenges of human well-being and urbanization, especially in the megacity of Jakarta."

Trisha Klancar's insight:

I like the video as a great visual of the effects of urbanization... the end shows the benefits of World vision... of course this can be viewed as being 'political'  or pushing another agenda...just stop the video there.

Seth Dixon's curator insight, May 31, 7:17 AM

Megacities are growing, especially in the developing world.  This rapid population growth leads to serious strains on many resources and the infrastructural capacities which leads to some dismal living conditions among the urban poor.  World Vision Australia works to assist and empower many of those without access to these important amenities.  Download the lesson as a PDF here

North Korean Deadline For Embassies And The South's Workers Aligns With DPRK's 'Magic Number'

North Korean Deadline For Embassies And The South's Workers Aligns With DPRK's 'Magic Number' | Geography for All! | Scoop.it

"Earlier North Korea told embassies in Pyongyang to consider evacuating their employees because it can't guarantee their safety after April 10.  That's also the day that South Korean (ROK) companies must pull all of their workers out of the Kaesong industrial complex — an ROK-financed project that accounts for up to 40 percent of the North's revenue.

For the last few days the North has blocked South Koreans from entering the complex in the North — considered the last lifeline between the two Koreas — while allowing them to leave at any time. The date 4/10/13 also plays into the fact that three generations of the Kim family have been fixated on the number 9."

Just because you've mapped a physical land feature, it doesn't mean it will stay that way forever.  This is a reminder that the Earth and it's cultural and physical landscapes are constantly changing.

Sylvain Rotillon's comment, May 9, 2:57 PM
The eprverse effect of maps is that they give the false idea that our physical world is steady. It's the case as we see here for coastal environments, but also for rivers.

When Anum Hussain heard about the Boston Marathon bombing, she immediately panicked, worried that the culprits would be like her. The 22-year-old Muslim was in the offices of Hubspot, the Cambridge marketing-software company she works for.

Emma Lafleur's curator insight, April 25, 10:49 PM

It is very sad to see that so many people associate all Muslims with terrorist groups. They know that 9/11 was done by people who were Muslims but they choose to ignore that they were radical. They choose to ignore that there are radicals in all religions, not just in Islam. These Muslims are Americans too, and it is sad that they should be afraid for their lives after these attacks because of the assumptions that other people will make about them. They are stereotyped as dangerous, when they are not violent. I am only glad to see their strength as they try to stay strong through these attacks on their religion, and I hope that they're stories here will promote understanding and will make people want to learn more about their religion so that these stereotypes can go away.

Trisha Klancar's comment, April 26, 10:30 AM
Thank you for the article.... good to show children as they meddle through predjudices on tv, news, hallways and home. Education is the key to breaking down barriers and opening eyes.
Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, April 28, 7:44 PM

The person that mailed the president and others poison could have done serious damage as well. The media doesn't seem to be painting that as everyone in the south is a potential terrorist, even though many situations in the south came close over history in many peoples opinions. This is most likely a really bad time for peaceful Muslims in Boston and other areas around the country.

A very good sign that North Korea is bluffing about war

A very good sign that North Korea is bluffing about war | Geography for All! | Scoop.it

If Pyongyang is as bent on war as it wants us to believe, why is it keeping the inter-Korean Kaesong industrial complex open?

Via Seth Dixon
Trisha Klancar's insight:

Very interesting insight.

Seth Dixon's curator insight, March 29, 11:02 AM

News reports coming out of North Korea are grim and threatening right now.  However, this Washington Post article argues that it might be all for show.  The Kaesong Industrial Complex was opened in 2002 as a gesture of peace.  Located just across the northern side of the border, it is staffed by South and North Koreans (South Korea get super cheap labor, North Korea gets an infusion of currency, both get positive PR). The Kaesong Industrial Complex continues to operate with the permission of the North Korean government.  Were that to ever change and North Korea shut down this joint venture, THEN we'll know that they are serious.  Watch this short video for an overview of the geopolitical situation on the Korean peninsula as of March 2013.
