The True Size Of Africa

The True Size Of Africa | Geography Education | Scoop.it

This is another old classic image that I might have shared earlier but it merits repeating. As Salvatore Natoli (a leader in geography education) once said, "In our society we unconsciously equate size with importance and even power." This is one reason why many people have underestimated the true size of Africa relative to places that they view as more important or more powerful.

Although I do not think they do to "trick", it is true that confuses many people and makes them believe in a world disproportionate. (Apologies for my terrible google-English)

This picture is great because while most people understand that Africa is a big place, most do not realize how big. Comparing the size of Africa is this visual manor makes it more real than just seeing a square mileage statistic.

it's amazing that such a large land mass can't find any long standing peace from any place you go to.

Regional Geography

Making the connections...

Thinking geographically is in essence about making the connections between themes, across regions and at a variety of scales.

"Prezi:" Demographic Transition Model

Prezi in an online alternative to powerpoint for displaying notes and lecture materials (noted for it's ability to see the whole picture, zoom in and it's rotating animations).  Prezi is free for educators and the presentations you made can be kept private or made public.  This Prezi outlines the 4 stages of the Demographic Transition Model, with historical and spatial context.  Thanks for sharing Kari!

I could never "produce" all of this...thanks why I like to word "curate as used by the scoop.it site. In fact I've got my students collaborating with me on the "regional geography" page.

Prezi: an Alternative to Powerpoint

Shake things up by trying Prezi.  This one I use at the end of the semester for my Regional Geography course.  Geography and Prezi are both all about "making the connections..."
