Since Katrina, the cartoonish pace of vegetation growth in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans resembles something out of a Chia Pet commercial.
The ecosystem is reclaiming parts of New Orleans that have been physically or economically abandoned. This is part elevation, climate and ecosystem; but it is also about urban land uses, disinvestment and socioeconomics.

It is with great pleasure that I can announce to you that a Graduate Certificate Program specifically for AP Human Geography teachers is about to be launched. Offered through the Elmhurst College Online Center, the program will to taught fully online in 8-week sessions. The APHG graduate certificate program curriculum correlates directly with the College Board AP Human Geography established curriculum. This 5-course program can be completed in less than one year. When I was a graduate student at Penn State, I was introduced to some great people and programs and I'm glad to see that the institution has continued to excel and be a leader. You have probably heard of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) and been interested in seeing how this might change higher education in the future. This MOOC is a free 5-week course designed to be an introduction to mapping, GIS and geospatial technologies so you don't need to be a specialists with a mapping background: it's for beginners. I know that many geography teachers tell their students about GIS, but are afraid to teach with GIS because they are worried that it will be too hard. This is an easy on-ramp to 21st century geospatial tools and any geography teacher hoping to modernize their skillset would do well to take this summer course fromthe Program of Online Geospatial Education at Penn State, taught by Dr. Anthony Robinson. A safe way for teachers to text message students and keep in touch with parents. I've tried numerous methods including Facebook groups and Twitter hashtags as ways to digitally connect with my students through emerging social media platforms. Every method seems to have a few privacy or accessibility issues and this is no expection. However, for this one, I think that the benefits outweigh the negatives and it has much greater privacy control than most. I haven't tried this out yet, but next semester I hope to use this free way to text message all my students (and/or parents) without the privacy issues of sharing cell phone numbers or getting them to sign up for a new social media platform. "Preparing to Teach Social Studies: Geographic Content for the Praxis Exam."

I know that most of my readers are in-service teachers as opposed to pre-service teachers, but I thought it was still worth sharing. Several schools have noticed that without geography classes, social studies teachers have difficulty becoming certified without some core geographic content. As a part of job at the Alliance coordinator for the Rhode Island Geography Education Alliance, I'm giving a workshop tonight at Salve Regina University designed to strengthen pre-service teachers geographic content as outlined on the Praxis Exam. I have prepared these materials with that audience in mind, but if there is anything you find useful, please use it or share it with those that could use it (local School of Education, Alliance, etc). Where are AP Human Geography courses being taught? What other schools in nearby districts also teach a certain AP course? This data has recently be made public (at least it's new to me) so you can find out where classes are being taught. The actual information for particular teachers is not revealed (for some important privacy issues), but this is still a great starting pointing for local and regional collaboration for teachers. Are you a high school teacher looking for some funds for your classroom? The My Community, Our Earth: Global Connections and Exchange Program (PDF) is connecting high school students in the U.S. with their peers abroad (in Bolivia, Ghana, Nicaragua and the Philippines) through virtual online meetings. The Association of American Geographers is especially eager to have AP Human Geography teachers participate in this program. These meetings are arranged through online video conferences, online phone calls and chat sessions using Skype. The purpose of these meetings is to stimulate thinking and collaboration between high school students across international borders around sustainable development themes such as climate change, green economy, food security and hazards and vulnerability, while enriching cultural literacy. Pigskin Geography is a 17-week program that motivates students to learn United States geography by tracking the travels of competing professional football teams with the NFL schedule. Pigskin Geography is an incredibly dynamic way to teach the geography of the United States. Specifically tailored for 4-6 grade students, this program gives students a series of 17 weekly activities that are adapted to the NFL schedule that week. These questions do NOT rely on football knowledge, but uses this as an opportunity to introduce vocabulary teams, and explore other places. For example: “This week the New Orleans Saints will ‘march’ over Cairo, IL, going to their game in Green Bay, WI. Locate Cairo at the southern end of the Illinois. Guidelines to run a Family Geography Night at a school or Alliance function...
This week I’ve had the privilege of working with NEGEN (New England Geography Education Network). The great people in the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance have collaborated to create a template to run Family Geography Nights at schools. The Family Nights are incredibly successful in showing the relevance of geography education to administrators, other teachers, parents and the general public.

That's really cool, the floor map reminds me of "Where in the world is carmen sandiago?" And the giant globe provides children with a different perspective on the world. Learning should always be fun to help entice younger students to want more.

I've mentioned that http://geographyeducation.org is another site that I've created to be a warehouse for the many of resources that are currently listed on this website. While the "tag" function here can is somewhat helpful, I created this parallel site to archive and gather resources in a way that corresponds with how a share them with my students in my World Regional Geography classes at Rhode Island College. First, I gathered all of my favorite resources within a regional context. During the summer, I will be archiving my resources thematically and future projects will continue to build the http://geographyeducation.org site.
