According to a new survey from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, three-quarters of U.S.
Smartphones have built-in location features with a host of apps that can be added. However, 1 in 4 smartphone users do not use these features at all. Age, ethnicity, education and gender (or more simply, demographic factors) play a major role. Which groups would you imagine use geo-location features more or less? Why?

GeoGuessr is a geography game which takes you on a journey around the world and challenges your ability to recognize your surroundings.

When I was a child I used to wonder if woke up somewhere far from home, would I be able to know where I was just by looking at the places around me (I was a geo-geek from way back when). GeoGuessr is the closest thing to finding yourself lost in the world and needing to figure out where you are without being wisked away. GeoGuessr will display 5 locations in GoogleMaps "StreetView" and you have to guess where the images are located. You can pan and zoom in the StreetView to explore the landscape and find more context clues as to where that location is. It is a fantastic exploration exercise.

I understand that my readers are not people that I need to convince the geo-literacy is an essential component for a 21st century education; but we are the people that need to convince principals, politicians, school administrators, teachers and parents that teaching geography is fundamental. Consider this an accessible article to use to make the case for geography for someone who sees the educational value from a business perspective. This music video is just for fun, but there is some solid content embedded in the lyrics...if you never want your students to laugh or smile, I do not recommend sharing this with your classes. A facetious look into the world of studying Geography. These students have obviously gone to a masive effort to explore their passion for Geography. While it may not be a stereotypically academic or intellectual piece, this video is a great representation of how a Geographer thinks broadly, critically and evaluatively. Delete the scoop?

I have a longstanding obsession with J.R.R. Tolkien’s 'The Hobbit,' starting with the great 1977 animated film that captured my young imagination. Hobbits are content to be intensely local and ignore the world beyond their neighborhood until Gandalf instills in Bilbo and subsequently Frodo to learn about the wider world. I’ve always seen that as push for all of us to get to know more about the world, and to experience it first-hand. Sometimes academic geography forgets the explorer component of geographic inquiry and discovery; it is these types geographic quotes from the movies and books that I wish to share.

I think this is my new litmus test for potential friends. If this picture from Mongolia doesn't bring a smile to your face, I just don't think that we can be friends. If anyone can find the original source (or a hi-res version), I'd love to hear about it.

Rick Wittrig designs each Fire Pit from one quarter inch (6.35 mm) thick carbon steel. They have an iron oxide finish/patina on the outside. The interior is coated with a high temperature resistant paint and has an 1-1/2" rain drain in the bottom.

In this interview he discusses many topics including the importance of geographic education, how to define geography and showing the relevance of the disciple in solving real-world problems. The Rhode Island Geography Education Alliance seeks to promote geo-literacy here in the Ocean State. So what is geo-literacy? The National Geographic Society’s Educational team... As the Alliance Coordinator for the state of Rhode Island, I organized these three videos (two from National Geographic) and some pictures to provide a basis for understanding what geo-literacy is and why it is important for society and within the workforce. I was finishing up my recent vacation to Finland, with one day in Helsinki visiting friends, when a novel thought for many Americans occurred to me: Look at a map.
This article explains the importance of geography education, and how a lack of geographic understanding limits students and professionals. While this is nothing new to this particular audience; however it is another tool to use to convince administrators and politicians that geography education needs to be stregthened in this era of increased global connectivity. This is a creative video that promotes geo-literacy. It is an excellent way to kick off a new school year if you are looking for a 'hook' to demonstrate the importance of geography to students today. Other materials of this nature can be found on this website under the tag 'geo-inspiration.'

This video really gave me a better idea of what this class will teach me and give me more knowledge about. I never really understood the definition of geography and why it was so important. It really seems like an interesting class and I'm very interested.

The authors of this article are from American Geographical Society and discuss the results of a study that indicate that Americans want more geography education in the school systems today. Often geography gets buried within the social studies curriculum and it is up to the individual teacher to ensure how much geography actually gets taught in the classroom. This is not a new problem; in a bulletin published by the Bureau of Education in 1922, it was said, "So long as it is assumed that history is all of the social studies the elements of the others will be neglected as they are now." This article provides good sources to help educators argue for more geographic content in the curriculum at all educational levels.

Many suggest that's those who want more geography education should be satisfied that it is one of the tiers of social studies. But we have seen even social studies be cut to half a year in our elementary schools. How can we build the necessary geographic, civic, economic, and history foundations in such short amount of time? Even now, as we access our news, it daily becomes more apparent how important these studies are.

I loved participating at the Rhode Island Geography Bee this weekend. This video was shared with all the parents, teachers and students to help them understand that while the Bee may focus on specific bits of knowledge/trivia, it is the beginning and a foundation for spatial thinking to understand patterns and processes. President Obama participated in this year's National Geographic Bee to to "celebrate the important role that geography plays in all our lives." During that event he made a statement that I think geographers should use more. Go to 0:45-1:10 in the video clip to hear this message or see the transcript below. "The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. This is a great step for America. Nothing better than the President of the United States pushing for Geography and Geography Education. President Obama tells us what geography really is about, "It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents." This is something that every student should know because without appreciating diversity and culture, how can one truly be American, a land where diversity is its heritage.
