Coast Lines

Coast Lines | Geography Education | Scoop.it
In the next century, sea levels are predicted to rise at unprecedented rates, causing flooding around the world, from the islands of Malaysia and the canals of Venice to the coasts of Florida and California. These rising water levels pose serious challenges to all aspects of coastal existence—chiefly economic, residential, and environmental—as well as to the cartographic definition and mapping of coasts. It is this facet of coastal life that Mark Monmonier tackles in Coast Lines. Setting sail on a journey across shifting landscapes, cartographic technology, and climate change, Monmonier reveals that coastlines are as much a set of ideas, assumptions, and societal beliefs as they are solid black lines on maps.
Seth Dixon's insight:

I haven't yet had the chance to look at this book, but it is currently being offered as a free e-book; I'm very excited to look it over.

We should host the Olympics in the same place every time

We should host the Olympics in the same place every time | Geography Education | Scoop.it
The Olympics are bad for cities. So why do we keep asking new places to invest billions of dollars in state-of-the-art stadiums they’ll never use again?

The game of the Games is rigged, with the IOC bearing no cost but reaping great profits. The competition is designed to force cities to bid ever upward, proposing state-of-the-art projects that they might not even need. Because of the mounting price tag, the vast majority of countries could never afford to host the Games. We need a new model, and I think the solution is obvious. We should build the Summer Olympics a permanent home.

Seth Dixon's insight:

Urban Geographer John Rennie Short writes an intriguing Olympic proposal, with the idea of fixing the broken economic model (for hosts) as well as the Greek economy.  He is author of the fabulous new textbook Human Geography: A Short Introduction;  you can hear how he wanted to bring a new voice to geography students that would excitement an intellectual vitality to their studies.  You can preview the supplemental resources and digital exercises for this engaging new textbook here.

The Habitable Planet

The Habitable Planet | Geography Education | Scoop.it

"The Habitable Planet is a multimedia course for high school teachers and adult learners interested in studying environmental science. The Web site provides access to course content and activities developed by leading scientists and researchers in the field."

Seth Dixon's insight:

Much like the Power of Place resources were created by Annenberg Learner to share World Regional Geography videos, the Habitable Planet has diverse resources for Physical Geography and Environmental Science.  In essence, it is an excellent free online textbook.

"This wiki exists to cultivate the disciplinary literacy of AP Human Geography Students at GPHS..."

A fun course webpage, with chapter/unit overviews, links, video clips, charts, etc.   What makes this one distinct is that it was collaboratively created by the students working on the unit summaries.  Nice job GPHS APHG students of 2008!

Introduction to Human Geography: A Disciplinary Approach | Geography Education | Scoop.it
This website serves as an off-campus host for text, images, data and other web-based resources associated with the free eText, Introduction to Human Geography: A Disciplinary Approach.
Seth Dixon's insight:

I'm very excited to see a free eText in Human Geography.  I will be looking at this more closely during the next semester and think that geography teachers will see this as a welcome supplemental to their arsenal of resources. This is definitely on the shortlist of best materials on this site.

The ArcGIS Book

The ArcGIS Book | Geography Education | Scoop.it

"Explore ten 'big ideas' that encapsulate the technological and social trends that have pushed geographic information systems (GIS) onto the Internet in a significant way. See how to apply these ideas to your own world. Open your eyes to what is now possible with Web GIS, and put the technology and deep data resources in your hands via the Quickstarts and Learn ArcGIS lessons that are included in each chapter."

Seth Dixon's insight:

I haven't fully previewed this online textbook yet but I am VERY optimistic about this one from the ESRI library.  You can also download the textbook as a PDF here.  There are several other online textbooks that would interest geography teachers

The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography

The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography | Geography Education | Scoop.it

Lately there has been a lot of chatter online about searching for "chapter study guides."  While this is not the most recent edition of the text, it is a publicly accessible online companion site (hence, no need to have purchased the text to access this). This has numerous "study guide-like" features (reviewing concepts, critical thinking, short essays, etc.) that could be a beneficial for teachers to find resources as well as to give to students for them to use as supplemental materials.

Need a FREE online textbook about Geospatial information and data for a college course?  This Penn State-produced books works well for undergraduate courses that are not necessarily geared towards geography majors, but getting acquainted with all types of geospatial technologies (GIS, Remote Sensing, GPS, etc.).   As an open-source book it is a tremendous resource.
