Workers at an ailing paper mill in Siberia are clinging to their jobs in the face of financial pressure and criticism from environmentalists.
The environment, industry and politics play key roles in this story of an old style Soviet mono-town on Lake Baikal. Monotowns had planned economies that revolved around one industry and today many of these are struggling in the post-Soviet era. While the particulars of the political situation are a bit dated, the overall issue is still quite relevant to understanding Russia today.
This video provides a clear picture of lasting effects of post-Soviet times. The Siberian mill was at one time a central industry town. Now that the industry has slowed down, it is becoming criticized for its environmental flaws. Environmentalists want to close the factory down, however there is a society of workers who are soley dependent on their jobs here. Through the transition from communsim to capitalism many factors need to be considered. The factory is causing a great deal of harm to the environment and the health of the people, however to just hut it down would disrupt the stability of the people who work there. Elizabeth Allen
Laws restricting Islamic symbols in the public sphere are fuelling political distrust and a shared sense of injustice.
One of the free response questions in the 2012 AP Human Geography test focused on increasing Muslim population in many European countries. The Muslim community has (in the view of most Europeans polled) has not adequately assimilated into European society, and with many Europeans feeling a cultural threat, have created a politically charged situation. Has Europe failed to integrate Muslims or have Muslims failed to integrate in Europe? Is this a problem? Why or why not? As we leearned in class, Europe has a declining population. If Europe continues to ban certain religions and culture, then obviously its population will continue to decline. It seems as though religion and poitics clash, just as they do elsewhere around the world. If women want to wear headscarves, let them. They are proud of their religion just as many of us are. Seems to me that the world is becoming more secular, restricitve and intrusive than religious Elizabth Allen
"The latest migration is from elsewhere in Central America. Thousands of Salvadoran refugees arrived in the 1980s. More recently, Guatemalans have come seeking land. Of Belize’s 300,000 people, 15% are foreign-born. Thanks to higher birth rates, mestizos have overtaken creoles (of mixed African ancestry) to become the biggest group, making up half the population."

Maybe this sounds disheartening, but I'm sure millions of people around the world would kill to eat the chicken nuggets and hamburgers made with pink slime, rather than go through another day without food. However, this food is CLEARLY incredibly unhealthy, and the fact that this is what children grow up eating is an abomination in one of the most powerful and wealthy nations in the world.
Glad this was brought to my attention! This will make me think twice before eating beef(maybe for just a couple days...) Elizabeth

The economic and social turmoil after the fall of the Soviet Union was profound enough to be seen in the demographic statistics. Birth rates dropped as the death rates went up. Typically when birth rates drop it is presented as an indicator of social development, but it clearly is not in this instance. What explains these statistics?
Perhaps Russia's social, economic, and high rate of alcohol consumption has contributed to these extreme differences in low birth and high death rates. Certainly a clear way to recognize post Soviet birth rates declining, while the death rate climbs. From 1992 on the death rate has been noticably higher than the birth rate. Eilzabeth Allen
"Distilling ethanol from tropical sugarcane takes less land and uses less fossil fuel than starting with corn grown in temperate climes. That makes Brazilian ethanol, unlike the pampered and grotesquely wasteful American version, competitive with hydrocarbons and genuinely good for the environment."
Although ethanol is working well for Brazil, there is a growing literature supporting the idea that wide-scale ethanol production is not sustainable or environmentally beneficial. This is a great example to demonstrate that economic and environmental policies are locally dependent on geographic factors and are not universally transferable. For a simple explanation of the differences in the economic and environmental differences in the production of sugar and corn-based ethanol, see: http://cei.org/studies-issue-analysis/brazilian-sugarcane-ethanol-experience
Interesting information. Like anything the pros and cons need to be weighed by the experts. Everyone would love a low price alternative for fuel, but the environmental risks may be too high. Elizabeth Allen
Belize is one of the most user-friendly places in the world and is equally friendly when establishing foreign residency. Many retirees are also finding budget-friendly as they embrace Belize's back-to-basics lifestyle.

Theodore says the work of helping his fellow countrymen get back on their feet has changed him for the better. "There are a lot of misconceptions about the Haitian people," Janty said. "If we provide them with tools and resources they actually do want to do for themselves, it's just about providing them with those tools and opportunities. All they're asking for is opportunities." The challenges for Haiti going forward are daunting. But for those empowered to rebuild their own country, the hope for the future is rising every day.

I have to say that I was surprised with what we learned in class and what I saw in the video. I did not think there was a considerable decline in Mexican migration to the US. As learned, due to much lower birth rates in Mexico, higher alert patrol along the borders and the agave product boom, there is actually a decrease in Mexicans crossing into the US. As heard in the video Mexicans do not still feel that the America is a great opportunity, therefore they do not want to leave their families, spend the money to get to the US only to find that due to the US recession, jobs are very scarce.
