The health of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has been downgraded to "poor" as the government quietly pushed some of the pollution targets that were supposed to be achieved this year back five years.
This is very sad. I recently visited the Great Barrier Reef with my family, it was my first time and honestly I thought it was amazing. However, my mum commented on the fact that the difference between when she visited it as child and now is immense. She noted that the colour of the coral had diminished significantly and the amount of fish is far less. The captain of the ship we travelled to the reef on did say that among other things the petrol of boats and the sunscreen from tourists has damaged this natural wonder to a great extent yet the demand for tourism of the area is to high to stop these means of damage from occurring.
