Youth jobless rate up in Sydney's south-west

Unemployment rates for young people in some parts of Sydney are almost four times the national average and experts blame education cuts.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations have shown that youth unemployment rates are more concentrated in some parts of Sydney then others. University of Canberra's centre for labour market research director, Phil Lewis suggested a possible reason for this by saying: "There are often higher levels of unemployment among the parents and lower levels of education. In the richer suburbs there is a culture. The parents were probably well educated. The expectation is that young people will go on to further study."

James Parker has been given the "okay" for the NSW Government to take his $1.5 casino hotel development to the next stage of approval and this project will be on of the nation's largest urban renewal developments.
