A survey conducted by the CSIRO into Australia's 35,000-kilometre coastline has calculated that 5.2 pieces of rubbish can been allocated per person in Australia. It is certainly a surprise when we consider Australia being a first world country with good waste management.

Across NSW 97% of beaches were graded either good or very good in terms of their environmental state. It suggests positive improvements have been made over the past decade in stormwater and sewage overflow management.

It is no surprise that the Great Barrier Reef is under threat, but the latest assessment of one of Australia's most iconic landmarks has seen its overall health has been down-graded to "poor". It stresses that the Queensland and Federal Governments' need to take immediate action.
