Sure this is an animated commercial for Chipotle Grill, but this perfectly encapsulates the beliefs, values and ethics that underscore the organic farming movement.

Roman Mirando's curator insight, October 24, 9:51 AM

This video explains the way that meat is produced in our country today. It is actually very nasty and we should go back to the traditional way of farming. The song is a very good song to play during the video. Chipotle is trying to change it for the better and go back.

Aurora Rider's curator insight, October 24, 10:14 AM

Sure this is a Chipotle commercial but is does a good job at showing the belief that we should go back to the old way of farming. The video shows a family farm being taken over by what appears to be some big corporation. Upon being taken over, the animals are confined in small compartments and injected by what appears to be antibiotics and some other unknown substance. The factories they are sent to are polluting the place. The farmer sees all of this and decides to go back to the start.

jada_chace's curator insight, October 26, 7:17 PM

In the video it shows how the world has evolved in the way that humans take action on Mother Nature’s ways. In the beginning, there was a small family farm that was growing crops and animals. Shortly after that, it showed how small family farms are being taken over by the big agribusinesses. In today’s society that tends to happen more and more, which can be both good and bad on our economy. Unless people don’t make a change about the way we treat our food, nothing in our economy is going to get better.

Metrography: London Tube Map to large scale collective mental map | Geographic Information Science | Scoop.it

The geographical structure of transportation networks are often reshaped to provide users with more understandable transit maps. These distortions have a major influence on people’s perception of a city’s geography, to the point they get stored mentally and become the collective representation of the real world’s geography.

Exploring Mexico through Dynamic Web Maps

Exploring Mexico through Dynamic Web Maps | Geographic Information Science | Scoop.it

"One of the people I regard most highly here at Esri has created an online atlas of Mexico.  The maps can be accessed in many different ways, such as an ArcGIS Online presentation with a description here, as an iPad iBook, but I think most importantly, as a series of story maps.  Each of these separate story maps contains 1 to 6 thematically related maps on the following topics:

Explore Mexico (Crime vs. Tourism)Mexico’s Natural WondersMexico’s Historical MonumentsGeography of Mexico – Did You Know?Indigenous People of MexicoCartograms of Mexico

I had no idea Honduras was the country with the highest murder rate in the entire world! These map are extremely interesting, as we see the obvious tourist destinations are everywhere on the coasts as opposed to the interior of the country of Mexico, yet the majority of the historical structures are in the interior centered around Mexico City.

Elizabeth Bitgood's curator insight, February 13, 3:14 PM

This site is neat.  The ability to use interactive maps to explore this country is very informative.  I recommend this site to anyone interesting in learning more about Mexico!

Jess Deady's curator insight, April 17, 10:17 AM

These maps all come together in a somewhat story-like sense. They are thematically related and can be separated to be able to look at each map individually. I like how there are multiple ways to access the maps.

Fox eBook's curator insight, August 20, 2013 9:28 PM

The rate at which geospatial data is being generated exceeds our computational capabilities to extractpatterns for the understanding of a dynamically changing world. Geoinformatics and data mining focuses on the development and implementation of computational algorithms to solve these problems. This unique volume contains a collection of chapters on state-of-the-art data mining techniques applied to geoinformatic problems of high complexity and important societal value. Data Mining for Geoinformatics addresses current concerns and developments relating to spatio-temporal data mining issues in remotely-sensed data, problems in meteorological data such as tornado formation, estimation of radiation from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, simulations of traffic data using OpenStreetMap, real time traffic applications of data stream mining, visual analytics of traffic and weather data and the exploratory visualization of collective, mobile objects such as the flocking behavior of wild chickens. This book is designed for researchers and advanced-level students focused on computer science, earth science and geography as a reference or secondary text book. Practitioners working in the areas of data mining and geoscience will also find this book to be a valuable reference.

Table of Contents

Chapter 1 Computation in Hyperspectral Imagery (HSI) Data Analysis: Role and Opportunities
Chapter 2 Toward Understanding Tornado Formation Through Spatiotemporal Data Mining
Chapter 3 Source Term Estimation for the 2011 Fukushima Nuclear Accident
Chapter 4 GIS-Based Traffic Simulation Using OSM
Chapter 5 Evaluation of Real-Time Traffic Applications Based on Data Stream Mining
Chapter 6 Geospatial Visual Analytics of Traffic and Weather Data for Better Winter Road Management

How Google Builds Its Maps—and What It Means for the Future of Everything

How Google Builds Its Maps—and What It Means for the Future of Everything | Geographic Information Science | Scoop.it

This is an amazing look at Google's efforts to "ground truth" their maps. While unlike other thematic maps I have posted here, this story helps us to see and think about the ways in which places are all imbued with information--information that can be represented digitally and that supports our movements through virtual and physical space. But not just our movements. And that's what I'm thinking most about in relationship to maps as arguments. Google is working to distribute collective intelligence across the map so that way finding and place finding are easier. But this same infrastructure could be used to layer thematic data that would express our collective beliefs, desires, hopes, and tragedies. We might move through the physical world and, using Google's map, see not only that Kentucky Fried Chicken is on the next corner and that the road curves slightly up ahead, but also that this part of the city has seen a dramatic reduction in crime, or an increase in youth civic involvement, or a recent shift in political affiliations, or an influx of talented musicians. How would this change the way we move through and interact with physical places?
