Well, the effects of the DNC in Charlotte are certainly being felt!  We made the "Dining & Wine" section of the New York Times today.  The article contrasts our "traditional" association with barbecue with our "emerging" artisanal vibe.  Interesting stuff.

In September, China stopped shipping rare earths, minerals crucial to military, cell phone and green technologies, to countries around the world. A report from the Bureau for International Reporting.

 

This 2010 video shows how a primary sector economic activity is reshaping global industry.  Green technologies are dependent on these mining resources and China is the world's rare earth 'superpower.'  Many factories have relocated in China in part because of cheap labor, but also to gain access to these rare earths.   Thanks to Seth Dixon who originally "scooped" this article.  Students in LBST 2213 in Spring 2012 should view this video--we will be discussing rare earth minerals as part of our discussion of strategic resources and sustainability.
