How do people die? Global mortality and causes of death visualised | Geog-on Golland | Scoop.it
What kills people around the world - and how does it vary from place to place?
Miles Golland's insight:

Global mortality and causes of death visualised.  I saw two big trends - healthcare has improved the world over (compare 1990 with 2010 and see the reduction in deaths from diarrheal diseases) and that sub-saharan Africa is still well behind the rest of the world (compare diarrheal deaths in western europe with that in sub-saharan Africa).  Sanitation is vital to development.

The Middle East’s Surprising Appetite for Oil

Seth Dixon's curator insight, December 12, 2012 12:38 PM

Most everyone knows about the importance of Middle Eastern oil to the global economy and how that impacts geopolitics.  What isn't well-known is that the Middle East's own demand for oil has been increasing as their wealth and standard of living has been rising.  This chart does not show the amount of oil consumption, but the "energy intensity."  This is the amount of energy (often oil) used to produce a unit of GDP for a country's economy.

Questions to Ponder: How will this change oil-producing countries economic development in the future?  How does this make us re-assess these economies?  Does this impact how we think about climate change issues?

Last week Naderev Saño, the Philippines’ chief negotiator at the Doha climate change talks, broke down in tears.
Miles Golland's insight:

The US will eventually benefit from this climate inaction - as the east asia region becomes more vulnerable in the wake of climate change, a more resilient US will begin to attract industry to its shores.

The emerging middles classes in China and India are capturing TNCs attentions. Loads of interesting examples of glocalisation in this article. Ignores the environmental impacts of the booming middle class consumption though. Also ignores the fact that as China gets richer, labour costs more. Where will the new cheap labour be sourced from?

Violent protests over the ownership of some uninhabited islands have brought the fractious relationship between Japan and China into the spotlight.
Miles Golland's insight:

A rise of nationalism in China and Japan over some unihabited island is worrying in itself.  But more worrying when you thinkg that the islands have key importance in that they would extend each country's EEZ to include valuable resources.  They might not be likely to fight over uninhabited islands but what if its over resources?
