local people went to request the release of detained Tibetans, after Tenzin Gyatso's self immolation protest, and to explain why Tibetans were carrying out protests.

In response, the top Chinese official in Tawu County told locals "that they could supply petrol to those who wanted to self-immolate”.

China has previously criminalised Tibetans assisting self-immolation protests and Tibetans in Tibet have recently been required to show identity papers to buy petrol.

In Tibet, bloggers post at their own risk

In Tibet, bloggers post at their own risk | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
The crackdown on writers and journalists is not limited to Tibet. President Xi Jinping has tightened press freedoms across China, according to Bob Dietz at the Committee to Protect Journalists. Not long after President Xi took office in Jan. 2013, a Communist Party communiqué called on the media to be “of one heart and mind with the Party”

“We’ve seen periods of loosening and tightening in Chinese media policies,” Dietz said. “Right now, it’s in a period of intense tightening — not just for Tibetans, but for all Chinese.”

The situation in Tibet remains especially tense and writers including Druklo appear to be a target. While Druklo’s exiled friend said he worries about the writer’s safety, he also praised Druklo’s courage and resolve.

“It was a condition that he accepted, that he will go to prison,” Druklo’s friend explained, “because he said simply, 'There is no choice for us Tibetans.'”

His Holiness the Dalai Lama launches 'Himachal News Now' and it's App | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
His Holiness said that the 1.3 billion Chinese people deserve to be given reliable information and if they were could make their own judgement about what is right and wrong. By comparison he praised India as a wonderful country where freedom flourishes. He remarked that while he generally considers himself one of the 7 billion human beings alive today, he has lived the last 56 years in India.

"I am a messenger for India, a son of India, but if you ask which part of the country I've spent the most time in, it's Himachal Pradesh. And I'd like to extend my greetings to the Himachali people and the wish that they will go from success to success."

Nepal’s Dangerous Dams - The New Yorker

Nepal’s Dangerous Dams - The New Yorker | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
Geologists argue that the risks of building dams in earthquake zones go well beyond an earthquake-induced collapse. Earthquakes trigger landslides that can block rivers or change their course, which would also impact the operation of a hydrodam. But the most fiercely debated risk, since the 7.9-magnitude Sichuan earthquake in 2008, which killed seventy thousand people and left nearly twenty thousand missing, is that of “reservoir-induced seismicity”—the theory that the weight of water behind a dam, coupled with the seeping of water into fissures in rocks below, can produce shearing stress strong enough to worsen, or trigger, an earthquake. The Zipingpu dam, a five-hundred-and-eleven-foot-high structure on the Min River and the largest dam in Sichuan Province, was implicated in the 2008 earthquake. Work on the dam began in 2001; it was built just five hundred and fifty yards from the Longmenshan fault line and three miles from the epicenter of the quake.

A Tibetan Town Rebuilt in Beijing's Image

A Tibetan Town Rebuilt in Beijing's Image | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
It’s now been five years since an earthquake devastated Yushu.
Le Bihan's insight:

The ruling party’s dream for this region is, and has always been, at odds with what many ethnic Tibetans want. This is the edge of Chinese empire, a contested space where everything has two names and two histories. What Tibetans call colonization, the ruling CCP calls “serf liberation.” Even as monks burn themselves alive to protest Chinese rule, state media trumpet campaigns to improve Tibetan livelihoods through road building and water treatment.

EU Parliament Members Demand Tibetan Rights Dialogue - Tibetan Magazine for Tibet News & Issues

EU Parliament Members Demand Tibetan Rights Dialogue - Tibetan Magazine for Tibet News & Issues | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
The EU Human Rights Dialogue with China was set up in 1995. Two rounds of the dialogue take place every year. Through it, the EU can address issues of concern such as the death penalty, re-education through labour, ethnic minorities’ rights, civil and political freedoms etc in a forum where China is committed to responding.

Evidence of growing pressure on China with regards to the Tibetan issue exists in similar petitions by other national governments. Countries which have urged representatives to raise these issues include the United States, France, and Australia. The effect such dialogue has on the PRC remains to be seen.
Le Bihan's insight:
In a letter written before the visit, 52 parliamentarians from six political groups wrote of their growing unease in regard to China’s treatment of Tibetans, citing particularly the arbitrary detention, arrest and torture of peaceful Tibetan protesters. They also called for a substantive and constructive dialogue with China, addressing core issues such as the preservation of the Tibetan language, culture, religion and tradition, and to re-open a dialogue with representatives of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The avenue has remained closed since January 2010. - See more at: http://www.contactmagazine.net/articles/eu-parliament-members-demand-tibetan-rights-dialogue/#sthash.j7u5LL4q.dpuf

China's Worst Kept Secret: 5 Facts About the Abduction of Tibet's Panchen Lama

China's Worst Kept Secret: 5 Facts About the Abduction of Tibet's Panchen Lama | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
1989 he stated that Chinese rule in Tibet has brought more destruction than benefit to the Tibetan people; this became his last public statement. Five days after, the 10th Panchen Lama suddenly died in Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. Many suspected that the Panchen Lama was poisoned by forces working for the Chinese government.
Le Bihan's insight:

On May 14th 1995, a 6-year-old boy, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was recognized as the 11th Panchen Lama by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Within three days of the announcement, the Chinese authorities kidnapped the young child and his family and instead installed another boy, Gyaincain Norbu in his place as the 11th Panchen Lama. The United Nations and human rights groups have strongly condemned this act. After 20 years, Tibetans continue to hold the only available picture of the 6-year-old Panchen Lama and call for his immediate release and pray for his well being.

Tibet Shaken Again by Nepal Quakes

Tibet Shaken Again by Nepal Quakes | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
Brief dispatches in China’s state-run media suggest that the devastation last month in Tibet included the south-central city Xigaze and the western town of Ngari. Some 47,500 people were made homeless and 300,000 in total were affected, according to one Xinhua report that also said 2,500 houses fell across 19 counties in Tibet, with more than 24,700 damaged. The report, citing local publicity department figures, said 82 temples were damaged.

“The Nepal earthquake greatly affected Tibet Autonomous Region, causing fatalities and huge losses to the local economy,” Xinhua said last week in a report that quoted unnamed local authorities.

Is This Dalai Lama the Last?

Is This Dalai Lama the Last? | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
The 14th Dalai Lama has always supported modernization, both in Tibetan spiritual practice and in the Tibetan educational curriculum that has been installed in India. It’s apparent the Dalai Lama’s deliberate ambiguity about whether Tibetans even need a 15th is a calculated move; he wants to leave that decision entirely up to his people, further solidifying their democratic rule in exile.

Brahmaputra Brochure.pdf | L'immolation : un geste politique au Tibet | Scoop.it
Le Bihan's insight:

The Brahmaputra river, upon which millions of South Asians depend for their livelihood, originates from Mansarovar Lake, near Mt. Kailash in Tibet. Known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet, it is the highest and one of the most powerful flowing rivers in the world. The Yarlung Tsangpo traverses west-to-east through varying landscapes of the Tibetan plateau, building up immense force and speed, entering India after the Great Bend in Arunachal Pradesh.

China’s plans for giant mega-dams on the higher reaches of the Brahmaputra, and water diversion of the Brahmaputra before the Great Bend will have a drastic impact on our water source in South Asia.
