Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Other Big Grocers Make Big Decision on GMO Salmon

Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Other Big Grocers Make Big Decision on GMO Salmon | What's Really In Our Food? | Scoop.it
A group of leading markets make their call ahead of FDA. A number of major grocery chains announced today they’re not waiting for the Food and Drug Administration to approve AquaBounty’s genetically modified salmon.
Kimberly Hale's insight:

This is great for the future of GMO foods. These big stores are taking a stand against these "franken-foods" and eventually these scientists who keep making all these modified foods and the companies that sell them will realize that the grocery stores and the consumers do not want these foods.

It's an hour long but this is a very good documentary to watch on Genetically Modified Foods. Again, it is centred on the United States as they still are the only country to not have food labelling laws that protect consumers against GMO's

Canada's Genetically Modified Pig with Mice Genes for Human Consumption | Politicol News

Canada's Genetically Modified Pig with Mice Genes for Human Consumption | Politicol News | What's Really In Our Food? | Scoop.it
Jan. 25, 2011 The Canadian govt invests in research to produce a pig that has less phosphorous in its feces, but is safe for human consumption. The mad scientists at the Univ.
Kimberly Hale's insight:

This is a bit of an older article and there are actually two parts to it, but from reading it I can say that I will not be too quick to eat any pork in the future.  Canada has been doing studies and been experimenting with crossing Pigs and MICE to create this new "animal" because it is more environmentally friendly.  It might be just that, but I sure won't want to be eating it.

Rep. Polis Wants Genetically-Modified Foods Labeled - CBS Denver | What's Really In Our Food? | Scoop.it
Colorado Rep. Jared Polis wants food labels to tell shoppers when products have been genetically engineered and discussed the plan in Boulder on Wednesday.
Kimberly Hale's insight:

I very much agree with Jared Polis in this article, it doesn't necessarily have to be about consumer safety because there are people who believe GMO products are safe, but labelling these products should be about consumer choice.  People should be allowed to make their own choice about whether they put themselves or their families at risk.

Kimberly Hale's insight:

Even organic products are no longer GMO free.  Canada has no testing that determines what a product actually contains so the intergrity of the products rely 100% on the intergrity of those who are growing them.

HEALTH & FITNESS 2013 – Fish As Drugs

HEALTH & FITNESS 2013 – Fish As Drugs | What's Really In Our Food? | Scoop.it
Genetically modified super salmon tries to swim through a hole in the regulatory net.
Kimberly Hale's insight:

This thoroughly disturbs me. If they are genetically altering fish then what is going to stop them from eventually directly altering cattle, pigs or chickens? It's bad enough that these animals are fed GM products but eventually this could lead to some kind of super animal.  And I can only imagine the implications and problems that will come from this since society is already skittish of normal animals after problems like Mad Cow...

I'm incredibly thankful my father owns beef cattle...at least I know they are grass-fed and don't contain any "extra" hormones.

Op-Ed: Hawaii 1st US state to pass GMO labeling bill, but with amendment DigitalJournal.com They state that the amendment "only covers incoming raw agricultural products, which means that it basically covers very little, except a little crookneck...
Kimberly Hale's insight:

At least some US states are trying to get GMO labeling.  It may not be the best law because how it covers only raw products coming into the state but its a start.  More US states need to start making these kind of laws and putting pressure on companies that sell GM products.

There it is, although the deadline is 2018 at least one company in North America is taking the step up to ensure that consumers know what's in their foods. Consumers deserve the choice whether to buy genetically modified products or not and Whole Foods is making that necessary adjustment.

Unfortunately law makers in Colarado believe that GMO labelling is unneccesary. Instead of being trendsetters they are backing away because they are afraid that Monsanto's might come after them like they did in Vermont

Kimberly Hale's insight:

GMO scientists have gone out and created a new BLUE strawberry that can survive cold temperatures.  Well that sounds perfect for places like Canada doesn't it? Except they used a gene from a FLOUNDER FISH that creates antifreeze to make the strawberry able to withstand cold temperatures which increases their shelf life.

Monsanto's just can do no wrong. It's THEIR product that is failing and yet they refuse to blame themselves, instead they choose to blame the farmers they have paid into growing their crops. Monsanto's is continuring to prove over and over that they don't care whatsoever for the well-being of human life, they only care about whether they are getting a large profit.

US farmers may stop planting GMs
Kimberly Hale's insight:

They say genetically modified products are better but they are obviously proving they grow no better than conventional seeds.  If even half of the US farmers that currently plant GM crops would change back to conventional seeds then it would create a large impact on the products we find in stores.

The results of Prop 37 should encourage these protestors to give up: Labeling GMO’s wouldn’t make food any safer, in California, Canada, or anywhere.
Kimberly Hale's insight:

I don't agree with anything spoken in this post, but it does give another person's perception of the GMO debate.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and while I will never feed my children GMO products, this person feels perfectly safe doing so.  There will always be people on both sides of the argument and it comes down to what people feel is best for themselves and their families.
